<Title>GSA Writing Advisor Position</Title>

    <div class="html-content">University of Maryland, Baltimore County<br>Office of Graduate Student Life<br><br><strong>WRITING ADVISOR - GRADUATE ASSISTANT POSITION - AY 2014-2015</strong><br><br>The Office of Graduate Student Life (OGSL) is operated by the Graduate Student Association (GSA) to meet the needs of graduate students as they pursue degrees at the master’s and doctoral levels in all disciplines at UMBC<br><br><strong>Job Duties:</strong><br>• Provides advice and support for all phases of graduate student writing and  Oral assignments, including organization, drafting, and editing<br>• Assists graduate students with using grammar, sentence structure, and style appropriate for each academic task<br>• Advises graduate students on a variety of documents, including essays, papers, applications, resumes, thesis &amp; dissertation chapters<br>• Maintains relationships with repeat advisees and meet the needs of one-time advisees<br>• Supports both native and non-native speakers of English, as well as students from a variety of disciplines<br>• In addition to individual sessions, the Writing Advisor is responsible for conducting a yearly writing workshop for UMBC’s Promise Success Seminar series. A familiarity with various style guides is helpful<br>• Attend weekly OGSL team meetings, monthly Senate meetings, GSA Social Hours, Graduate Student Week events, the Graduate Research Conference, and Graduate School sponsored events<br>• Collaborate with the OGSL team &amp; GSA Executive Board to implement GSA’s mission<br>• Staff the GSA Office 20 hours a week and attend to miscellaneous office work when necessary<br>• Knowledgeable of the Graduate Student Handbook, The Graduate School &amp; GSA policies<br>• Conduct occasional workshops on writing strategies relevant to graduate work (cover letter writing, citation use, essay prose, etc.)<br>• Promote Writing Advisor role and services to UMBC graduate community<br>• Update, maintain and advertise Writing Advisor website content<br><br><strong>Qualifications &amp; Requirements:<br></strong>• Strong interpersonal, analytical, oral and written communication skills required<br>• A strong command of English, written composition and metalinguistic knowledge is critical<br>• Commitment to diversity &amp; team building necessary to work with UMBC’s diverse population and programming<br>• Bachelor’s degree, full-time enrollment in a UMBC master’s or doctoral degree program &amp; be in good academic standing with The Graduate School<br>• Applicants may not hold a doctoral degree or have UMBC adjunct faculty status<br>• Applicants may not be nominated/hold a position on the GSA Executive Board<br>• Independent and self-motivated work ethic crucial<br>• Essential to be able to work independently and as a part of a team<br>• A positive attitude, superior time management skills, patience &amp; a sense of humor are advantageous<br><br><strong>Compensation:</strong><br>• Appointment runs from August 10. 2014 - June 13. 2015<br>• Full time stipend<br>• Up to ten (10) credits of tuition remission per semester<br>• GA Health Care coverage is offered<br>Please Follow Application Instructions Carefully – Your Application Will Not Be<br>Reviewed Unless ALL Materials Are Submitted<br><strong><br>Electronically submit:</strong><br>• Your resume in PDF<br>• Your unofficial UMBC transcripts if already an enrolled UMBC graduate student OR official<br>transcripts of other universities attended if a newly admitted UMBC graduate student<br>• Application letter in PDF<br>• Contact information for faculty reference (Name, Title, Address, Email, Phone)<br><br>• 3 Various Writing Samples in PDF to:<br>Jenness E.     <div class="html-content"><strong>CALL FOR PAPERS: Forging Linguistic Identities </strong><br>March 12-14, 2015<br><br>Department of Foreign Languages<br>Towson University,<br>Towson, Maryland  21252<br><br>Keynote Speaker:<br>Dr. José Del Valle,<br>Professor of Hispanic Linguistics,<br>Graduate Center at the City University of New York<br><br>The Department of Foreign Languages at Towson University announces a conference, “Forging Linguistic Identities” to be held on March 12-14, 2015 and invites proposals for papers.  The conference seeks to examine language as socially embedded within historical and geographical contexts. Possible topics might include, but not be limited to:<br><br>-   Dialects/diglossia and their role in group identity formation<br><br>-   The standardization of national and/or majority language(s) and its impact on national or regional politics<br><br>-    Multi-lingualism in states and regions and its negotiation and practice by the communities of use.      <br><br>-    Use(s) of indigenous languages under transnational states<br><br>-    National reception of dialect/minority-language literature and verbal culture<br><br>-    Migration<br><br>-   Translation studies<br><br>The scope of the conference is not limited by region, language, or time period.  Proposals involving languages taught by the Department of Foreign Languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Ancient Greek, Biblical and Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish) are especially encouraged.  Proposals are welcomed across disciplines, from scholars of languages and literatures, geography, history, psychology and sociology.  Please send an abstract of 250 words by email to: Prof. George McCool (<a href="gmccool@towson.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">gmccool@towson.edu</a>).  Please include your name, full address, institution affiliation, day telephone, fax and email address.  <strong>Please note that Conference papers must be limited to 20 minutes.</strong><br><br>Faculty at all ranks are encouraged to participate.  Travel costs will be assumed by the participants.  We will offer discounted hotel rooms near campus, and a graduated scale of conference fees.<br><br>A peer-reviewed publication of selected acts is tentatively planned.<br><br><strong>Deadline for submissions is October 1, 2014.</strong></div>

    <p><strong>The 2014 Summer Horizons program is open to <span><em>anyone</em></span> who is interested in learning more about UMBC and the graduate admissions process.</strong>  The graduate school preparation material that we will present  is applicable to most U.S. institutions.  Faculty and staff may invite prospective students to this event.  Visitors from out-of-town are welcome to attend.</p>
    <p>Invitations are  extended to:</p>

    <li>All UMBC undergraduate students</li>
    <li>As part of the PROMISE Pathways project, undergraduate and master’s students  from schools within the University System of Maryland (USM) have a special invitation to attend</li>
    <li> Students from all summer programs within the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) region</li>
    <li>Students from NSF programs such as LSAMP, AGEP, NSF ERC, RDE etc., at any school</li>
    <li>McNair programs at any school.</li>
    <li>Students from organizations such as SHPE, SACNAS, NSBE, and AISES at any school in the country are welcome to attend.</li>
    <li>Students from any college or university, who are either local or will travel the distance to learn more about graduate school.</li>
    <li>We also invite professionals who are considering returning to graduate school for an advanced degree.</li>

    <p><a href="http://www.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC</a> will host the annual <a href="http://summerhorizons.wordpress.com/history-of-the-horizons-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Summer Horizons program</a> for undergraduate students and others who are interested in learning more about graduate school admission, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The 2.5-hour workshop will feature sessions on the application timeline, GRE, Statement of Purpose, Recommendation Letters, and other topics related to preparing for graduate school.  There will be a panel hosted by current graduate students, and the keynote speaker will be the President of UMBC, <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2111975_2111976_2112119,00.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Freeman A.     <p><strong>The 2014 Summer Horizons program is open to <span><em>anyone</em></span> who is interested in learning more about UMBC and the graduate admissions process.</strong>  The graduate school preparation material that we will present  is applicable to most U.S. institutions.  Faculty and staff may invite prospective students to this event.  Visitors from out-of-town are welcome to attend.</p>
    <p>Invitations are  extended to:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>All UMBC undergraduate students</li>
    <li>As part of the PROMISE Pathways project, undergraduate and master’s students  from schools within the University System of Maryland (USM) have a special invitation to attend</li>
    <li> Students from all summer programs within the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) region</li>
    <li>Students from NSF programs such as LSAMP, AGEP, NSF ERC, RDE etc., at any school</li>
    <li>McNair programs at any school.</li>
    <li>Students from organizations such as SHPE, SACNAS, NSBE, and AISES at any school in the country are welcome to attend.</li>
    <li>Students from any college or university, who are either local or will travel the distance to learn more about graduate school.</li>
    <li>We also invite professionals who are considering returning to graduate school for an advanced degree.</li>

<Title>NEW PROMISE AGEP-T Postdoctoral Program &#8211; University System of Maryland</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>PROMISE AGEP: Maryland Transformation (An NSF AGEP-T), is proud to announce the opening round of applications for the new University System of Maryland’s STEM Postdoctoral Fellowship program.</p>
    <p><strong>This NSF funded program is designed to promote faculty diversity by preparing diverse, talented postdoctoral trainees with the career skills needed to succeed in STEM academic research.</strong>  Fellows will propose research projects at a home institution of: University of Maryland, University of Maryland-Baltimore, or University of Maryland-Baltimore County, the three research institutions within the twelve-campus University System of Maryland.   Additionally, fellows will design opportunities for research, teaching and mentoring rotations at one or two other System institutions. In addition to an innovative research experience, fellows will receive career development guidance, participate in a community of scholarship, create new collaborations and cultivate employment opportunities. Fellows will receive a stipend plus benefits.    The fellowship period is one year.  Awards will be made to 1-2 scholars per year.</p>

    <p>The application deadline for positions beginning in the fall of 2014 is June 15. <em><strong>Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a PhD in a STEM field.</strong></em> Commitment to the goals of the program, strong academic and research credentials and an interest in teaching and mentoring will be important criteria used in the selection process.</p>

    <li>Statement of plans to advocate for diversity in the professoriate including teaching and mentoring philosophy (limit 1 page),</li>
