CFP: Indiana Digital Rhetoric Symposium
Indiana University - April 2015
The English Department at Indiana University invites proposals on the symposium theme, “Digital Rhetoric: Perspectives and Definitions.” The theme is intended to foster conversations around what constitutes digital rhetoric in order to explore the myriad perspectives at work in, and coming to bear on, digital rhetoric. This event will be comprised of two keynote speakers, fifteen invited presentations, and 7-9 speakers selected from submissions to this CFP. Dr. Jody Shipka of the department of English at UMBC is one of the selected speakers for this symposium.
Focal areas might include:
- Definitions of digital rhetoric
- Digital rhetoric and the history of rhetoric
- Key perspectives on digital rhetoric
- Digital rhetoric practices, protocols, pedagogies, or performance
- Digital rhetorics and digital aesthetics
- Digital and rhetorical methodologies
- Digital rhetoric and new materialities
- Digital rhetoric and being digitally-abled
- Digital rhetoric episteme, doxa, and ontological conditions
Select conference papers will have the option to be published as part of a special issue of
Enculturation.

Real People Profiles: Dwayne Butcher
We're asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Name: Dwayne Butcher
Hometown: Memphis, TN
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: I started working at commonvision in January 2014.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I am the Coordinator of commonvision, UMBC's Design and Print Center, and oversee the iNet Digital Media studio.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I oversee all management of commonvision and iNet projects.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I enjoy that I, as well as my student staff, get to interact with every department and student group on campus. We get to meet all these great students/staff/faculty at UMBC without ever really having to leave the office!!
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: It is not so much as a learning experience or memorable moment, but it has been so refreshing to be able to work with and within such a passionate, diverse, encouraging, and committed community. I can not imagine a better environment in which our students can learn, grow, and prosper. Oh, there are also awesome cupcakes in Flat Tuesday's.
Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?
A: Most people on campus may not be aware, but my part-time staff is made up of entirely of full-time students. Everything that comes out of commonvision and iNet is created by a student. On top of everything we do on campus, our office just completed a project for Substance Use Disorders in Maryland, a state run government initiative providing information for substance use for Marylanders. My student staff created all the marketing and branding materials for their office. The work was even previewed at an event at the Whitehouse this summer and is now installed in numerous clinics around the state and will soon be seen on hundreds and hundreds of public buses in Maryland!!
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________" A: The Memphis Grizzlies, hot wings, the board game Risk, experimental short films, and now, as a "new" Baltimorean, Old Bay.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: I think everyone should take the time to visit the Joseph Beuys sculpture garden. He is a world renowned artist and we are absolutely fortunate to have such a large installation of his work on campus. Folks,

The first is a dinner where we will welcome our new cohort, and socialize, while devouring some great food.
The second event is a beautiful combination of a study session and fun. If you are working on some project/dissertation and would like to work with peers, mark this day. Even if you don't wish to work during this time, you can just drop by any time for the amazing snacks we'd be sharing. It will be snack and work paradise there.

AMST 630 Cultural Policy and the Politics of Culture, Wed 7:10-9:40pm - James Early
This course examines the historical development of cultural policy in the United States, especially in relation to the practical problem of achieving cultural equity within the public and private institutions of a multi-cultural political democracy. Special attention is paid to the cultural dynamics of certain periods and to interactions between the cultural systems and characteristics of various racial and ethnic groups, of cultural areas and regions and of occupational groups and socio-economic classes. Illustrative cultural materials embrace the graphic and plastic arts, dance, music, literature and various segments of popular culture. Analytical perspectives draw upon the disciplines of anthropology, cultural geography, folklore, history and linguistics.
An interdisciplinary examination of the nature and varieties of community in American culture, past and present, focusing upon the analytical conceptions of community as place, social structure and culture. The course will consider classic and contemporary literature of community studies, including perspectives from sociology and anthropology, social and cultural history, social psychology, creative writing and related interdisciplinary fields. Students will apply concepts from the course to the study of a particular local community, developing specific research skills through the investigation of its historical and contemporary character.

Call for Papers
The International Advisory Board is pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the Thirteenth International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities. The Humanities Conference will be held 17-19 June 2015 at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. We welcome submissions from a variety of disciplines and perspectives and encourage faculty and students to jointly submit proposals, discussing The Humanities through one of the following themes:
Conference Themes
- Critical Cultural Studies
- Communication and Linguistic Studies
- Literary Humanities
- Civic, Political, and Community Studies
- Humanities Education
- "From 'Digital Humanities' to a Humanities of the Digital"
2015 Special Focus
In addition to the annual themes, the conference will address the special focus–From 'Digital Humanities' to a Humanities of the Digital–through keynote speakers, garden sessions, workshops, and parallel sessions that examine the following topics:
- The ‘digital’ as a social imaginary: exploring historical continuities and ruptures in social and cultural practices in the era of digital cultures.
- The digital within the humanities: new methods and tools for documentation, research, and representation.
- The political economy of digital humanities: e-learning, e-publishing, and the reframing of disciplines and institutions.
- Big data and little data; negotiating the public and the private.
- Open access and open cultures: developing sustainable knowledge ecologies.
- Adapting methodologies and focus in the digital age: has the dust settled on the ‘digital humanities’?
- From the digital humanities, to a humanities of the digital; rebuilding the humanities in the shadow of the digital, and developing a humanities of the digital.
Proposal Submissions and Deadlines
The current review period closing date for the latest round of submissions to the Call for Papers (a title and short abstract) is
4 December 2014. Please visit our

If you are unable to attend the conference, you may still join the community and submit your article for peer review and possible publication, upload an online presentation, and enjoy subscriber access to The Humanities Journal Collection.
Teachers College, Columbia University Working Papers in TESOL & Applied Linguistics is an
online journal dedicated to publishing research in progress in the fields of TESOL and Applied Linguistics.
Within a conceptual framework that values an integration of theory and practice, the journal publishes full-length articles dealing, in a principled way, with language use, language acquisition, language teaching, and language assessment. The journal also publishes interviews, short commentaries, and book reviews.
The Editorial Board is currently accepting manuscripts for future issues. Articles submitted to the journal should normally be no longer than 8,000 words. Each paper must begin with an abstract not exceeding 200 words. Manuscripts submitted should follow APA format. Works referred to should be separately listed at the end of the article.
No information that identifies the author should be included in the paper. A separate title page should be provided, with the following information: title, the author's name, affiliation, address, and e-mail address.
Please note that submissions published in the working papers may be published subsequently in revised forms in other journals or publication.

Preparing a Proposal for External Funding in the Humanities

Dr. Ralph Pollack, UMBC Professor Emeritus, will present a workshop specifically targeting proposals in the Humanities. Topics will include understanding the review process, the evaluation criteria, finding the right funding mechanism, designing the narrative and writing the fellowship proposal, capturing the reviewers' attention and other proposal writing strategies.
