For example, for a web series pilot I am currently producing ("Marylandia"), I wanted to include President Freeman Hrabowski in a sketch about something totally random.

I considered not asking, finding something else, maybe this idea was too big etc. Not only did he agree to star in it, he absolutely MADE the sketch and in doing so gave a great message to all of the UMBC community. If I had listened to that little voice in my head that said "Don't ask", that sketch might not have even made the final cut and I would've missed out on that amazing experience.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: One of my films, “Future Children,” brought the issue of mixed race identity to the attention of the greater/national public. I was a featured commentator on an NBC 4 broadcast (DC/MD); I was interviewed twice on WHUR 97.3 radio and was invited to screen the film in Los Angeles at Universal Studios. Absolutely none of this would have been possible without my incredible cast of 20+ UMBC students, who took the time out of their day to star in, compose music for, and support this project.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Critically analyzing one's own personal bias. knitting. skepticism. comedy central shows.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: First of all I'd love to invite everyone who wants to get involved in Critical Social Justice on campus to check out the "Critical Social Justice Student Alliance" Facebook page & come to our meetings!

Also my YouTube/Tumblr page is "EmilyonWishes" just throwing that out there.

The people who work alongside me for UMBC Student Life are an impeccable resource and some of the most genuinely kind & interesting people I've met here.

I know I can always have a thought-provoking conversation at the Mosaic Center's "What's the Tea?" social justice discussions.

And the UMBC Women's Center is full of some of the most open minded, beautiful and strong people I've met on campus who are dedicated to seeing this school and the world change for justice and equality.

If you haven't checked out those places or met those people, I'd suggest you get the chance to ASAP. This historical symposium is celebrating its third convocation: the first was held in 2011 and the second in 2013. The symposium is historic in that Morgan State is singular among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) in hosting an academic event that focuses the intersectionality of identity markers that include sexuality, race, gender, and ethnicity. The symposium brings together expert researchers from around the region. This year’s theme is “Masculinities,” and panelists will speak on a range of topics as they relate to the intersections of masculinity with sexuality, race, gender, and ethnicity. This year’s keynote speakers are Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, Professor of African and African American Studies at Duke University, and Mr. Kylar Broadus, Founder of Trans People of Color. The event is hosted by the Women’s and Gender Studies Program (WGST) at MSU and is sponsored by MSU, Towson University, the Human Rights Campaign and the National Black Justice Coalition.

LLC Doctoral Candidate Emek Ergun will present a paper at this symposium.

Today is the last day of registration https://www.123signup.com/register?id=ypszr

National Endowment for the Humanities Workshop at UMBC

<Tagline>Dresher Center and CAHSS host regional NEH Grants Workshop</Tagline>

UMBC welcomed the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for a regional grant-writing workshop on February 20, 2015. The workshop, conducted by the NEH’s Division of Research Programs, was sponsored by the Dresher Center for the Humanities; the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS); and the Office of the Vice President for Research.

Faculty participants from UMBC and seven area colleges and universities learned about NEH grant and fellowship programs, and special initiatives. The Maryland Humanities Council also spoke about its grant opportunities. A “mock” evaluation panel, led by UMBC NEH Fellows Kate Brown (History), Thomas Field (MLLI), and Anna Shields (MLLI), discussed the NEH proposal review process. Grant application-writing strategies were also shared.

"The Dresher Center was pleased to welcome the NEH to campus,” noted director Jessica Berman. “Workshops like these give a shot in the arm to researchers, who then begin to consider how their work fits into national priorities and initiatives. The workshop also showcased the strengths of UMBC faculty work in the humanities.”

With an annual program budget of $108 million, the NEH awards grants to individuals and groups of humanities researchers at universities, museums, libraries and archives, and other cultural and educational organizations. These highly competitive grants, which are evaluated by scholars and other experts in their field, have an average award rate of between seven and ten per cent per year. If denied, NEH encourages applicants to re-submit.

The Endowment also supports public programs and special initiatives, like the new “Common Good: The Humanities in the Public Square,” which seeks to bring humanities scholarship to public attention in new, significant ways. The NEH’s Office of Digital Humanities provides grants to projects that integrate new technologies in humanities research, as well as those that study digital culture from a humanistic perspective.

NEH-funded research projects often cross the disciplinary boundaries between the arts, humanities, and social sciences. At UMBC, NEH fellowships and grants have been awarded to CAHSS faculty in the departments of Africana Studies; English; Geography and Environmental Systems; History; Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication; Political Science, Sociology-Anthropology, Theatre, and Visual Arts.

For information on NEH programs, contact Rachel Brubaker, Assistant Director for Grants and Program Development, Dresher Center for the Humanities: rbruba1@umbc.edu.

Photo (from left to right): Anna Shields, MLLI; Tom Field, MLLI; and Kate Brown, History

What is Prove It?

by Emily Melluso

The Prove It! application deadline is right around the corner, with the first round of submissions due at 11:59pm this Friday, March 1st.

What does this mean for UMBC undergraduates? It means that there is an opportunity to work together to improve our UMBC experience, potentially including its programs, services, and physical spaces. SGA will back selected projects with grants of up to $10,000. With Prove It!, you can see your ideas for UMBC become realities.

Many students have asked what Prove It! projects have looked like in the past. Check out some of the past Prove It! winners and finalists:

The Garden was a Prove It! winner from the 2014 competition. This project is now manifesting as a physical community garden, located across from the Performing Arts and Humanities Building, while also becoming a student organization and a partner for service-learning and other projects across campus.

“Noche Vida,” a 2012 Prove It! winning project, used its $10,000 grant to help “Pura Vida,” the café in the Albin O. The members of this team funded and staffed the initial implementation of extended hours to demonstrate that keeping Pura Vida open later for users of the Retriever Learning Center (located next to the atrium of the AOK Library) would be profitable. Thanks to the success of Noche Vida, Pura Vida is now open until midnight on weeknights.

The mural in the Biological Sciences building was a Prove It! 2012 finalist. Although not ultimately funded by Prove It! that year, the mural was able to be completed thanks in part to the relationships and support established as a part of the application process.

The Prove It! submission process mirrors many grant applications. The strategy and connections necessary for the project’s success are often forged in the process of completing the application.

What about communities outside of UMBC? The mission of Prove It! is to fund ideas and projects that students have for bettering or building onto the experience of being a UMBC student. I most certainly love helping out, which is kind of part of what being a friend entails. Meeting new people and making new friends or even just acquaintances can be fun. I also most certainly enjoy working (probably because I like my jobs) and learning new things.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: I do not think I can compare the importance of my experience or my memories so instead, I would choose to mention a few of the things I have picked up since my coming to UMBC. I didn't know a thing about sailing before and now I sail with the UMBC Sailing Team at Regatta and enjoy doing so. Through my work with The Garden, I have learned (and would still be learning) about food systems, farm workers rights, gardening methods etc. I could go on and on about what UMBC has taught me but then this would become an essay (if not a book) plus, I did say I'd be mentioning only a few.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: One way I have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC and in other communities is by service, usually through the Shriver Center. Whether is was by being a tutor, working with animals, humans, or by some behind the scenes work (e.g. through initiatives), One common impact in all service situations was that the interaction brought benefits and some contentment if not satisfaction to the parties involved (myself included, of course). I think this impact is important and matters because even if all isn't perfect, all that really matters is to make sure we are happy/content (even if not giddy with it) with ourselves and bringing happiness to others even in the smallest ways we can.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Nothing and No one in particular, just life as a whole.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: I remember using the campus roads to learn how to bike last summer and how patient everyone was with me.

The animals one can find on this campus are pretty interesting like the birds, fishes, deer, foxes, cats, ducks, squirrels and probably more that I have yet to see.

Time and time again, I have been surprised at how malleable UMBC is, how easy it is to mould and make it yours because of the many opportunities available.

Lastly, PERSPECTIVE MATTERS.

Co-Create UMBC is a blog for and about UMBC, written by David Hoffman and Craig Berger from the Office of Student Life.
