LLC Students Needed for Fall Women's Center Roundtables
A great opportunity for LLC students
The Women's Center is looking for graduate students to help lead our roundtable discussions planned for fall semester. If your research interests relate to any of the following topics (or if you'd be interested in potentially leading a future discussion related to feminism, social justice, or gender/women's issues), we want to hear from you!
- Whiteness and white girl/womanhood (Tuesday, September 22nd from 4-5pm)
- Women and sports (TBD for early November)
The Women's Center's roundtable discussion series explores various issues and identities through a feminist lens. These conversations are led by a panel of faculty, staff, and student participants who provide insight and context to encourage a critical dialogue. Past discussion topics include the construction of mixed-race identities, gender and immigration, and Black hair and body politics.

The K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award
Deadline for receipt of materials: October 1, 2015
The K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award recognizes graduate students who show exemplary promise as future leaders of higher education; who demonstrate a commitment to developing academic and civic responsibility in themselves and others; and whose work reflects a strong emphasis on teaching and learning.
The award honors the work of K. Patricia Cross, Professor Emerita of Higher Education at the University of California, Berkeley.
Eligibility
All doctoral level graduate students who are planning a career in higher education are eligible, regardless of academic department. Graduate students in fields where the Master's degree is the terminal degree, such as the MFA in art, are also eligible. (Nominees must hold student status in January 2016.)
Applicants must demonstrate:
- Leadership ability or potential for exercising leadership in teaching and learning, with a strong commitment to academic and civic responsibility; and
- Leadership or potential leadership in the development of others as leaders, scholars, and citizens.
Nomination Process
A faculty member or administrator must nominate the student, with a supporting letter from a second faculty member or administrator. The following materials must be submitted for an application to be considered:
- a nomination letter from a faculty member or administrator;
- a supporting letter from a second faculty member or administrator;
- a statement from the student indicating how he or she meets the award criteria;
- a copy of the student's curriculum vitae.
Nominations can be submitted anytime, but no later than October 1, 2015. Nominees must also complete an online form with all contact information. Only complete nominations will be considered.
The Award
The K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award provides financial support for graduate students to attend AAC&U's 2016 Annual Meeting, which will be held in Washington, DC, January 20-23, 2016. All award recipients are required to attend the conference.
The award includes travel, lodging, conference registration, and a one-year affiliation with AAC&U, including subscriptions to all AAC&U periodicals.
The awards will be announced in December 2015, and recognized at AAC&U's Annual Meeting in January.

Maryland Youth Advisory Council: Provides Maryland residents aged 14 - 22 (as of September 1, 2015) "the opportunity to provide feedback and recommendations regarding public policies and programs that affect their future and to take a leadership role in creating meaningful change." Members serve a one-year term (September 1st - August 31st) during which they recommend at least one piece of proposed legislation, provide legislative testimony on issues affecting young people, and hold at least one public forum. Dissertation House as a pre-conference event for the PROMISE SSI at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve, August 13-14, 2015
The University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) is sponsoring the University System of Maryland-wide Dissertation House at the PROMISE Summer Success Institute, August 13-15, 2015. All participants will work on their dissertations on Thursday evening, and all day Friday, and will attend activities for the #ThinkBigDiversity 2015 PROMISE Summer Success Institute on Saturday, August 15, 2015.
All events will be held at The Hotel at Arundel Preserve. As part of the Dissertation House, and as a transition to the events for the Saturday PROMISE SSI, there will be a special evening dessert session and book discussion: Sisters in the Dissertation House on Friday night, hosted by book author Dr. Jennifer Bacon, and led by Dr. Shanna Smith.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore and PROMISE Maryland’s AGEP are sponsoring a system-wide Dissertation House for graduate students in STEM programs. The writing and research retreat will take place at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve. Lodging for 2 nights and meals are provided for student participants. Eligibility for the SSI Dissertation House:
1) Enrolled in a STEM graduate program (based on the NSF-supported fields per the NSFGRFP) at one of the schools within the University System of Maryland
2) Underrepresented according to the NSF Definition for AGEP, U.S. Citizen
Per NSF.gov: AGEP is committed to the national goal of increasing the numbers of underrepresented minorities (URMs), including those with disabilities, entering and completing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate education and postdoctoral training to levels representative of the available pool. URMs include African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders.
This event is part of the 2015 PROMISE Summer Success Institute. Following the Dissertation House (DH) sessions on Thursday and Friday, all DH participants will be required to continue participation in the PROMISE SSI on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at The Hotel at Arundel Preserve:

The Dissertation Fellowship is designed to provide doctoral candidates at UMBC an opportunity to devote the necessary concentration and attention towards finishing the writing of their dissertations. The Fellowship is specifically designed for students with full-time jobs off-campus, for those without any financial support who are making steady progress with their writing, and for whom having additional time and resources would permit them to complete the process more expeditiously. This Fellowship is not available as an option for students with available graduate assistantship support.
The Dissertation Fellowship could provide promising doctoral candidates with financial support so that they may reduce their current obligations and partially offset any reductions in salary or increases in expenses. No additional work assignments other than work on the dissertation are to be associated with this support.
Priority will be given to students who demonstrate that the Fellowship will allow them the needed time to complete their writing and to make revisions in time to defend the work within a realistic but expeditious time frame. Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated a commitment to provide at least 20 hours per week for an entire academic semester to writing the dissertation.
Dissertation Fellowship awards are available for Fall 2015. The duration of an award is for one semester. The maximum level of support for Fall is a total stipend of $8,239.88 per Fellowship plus tuition remission for two credits of 899.
To be considered for a Dissertation Fellowship, the Ph.D. candidate must:
- be in good academic standing;
- provide a letter of support from the Chair of the Dissertation Committee that
1) describes the state of the dissertation and the probable impact of receipt of the Fellowship on the progress toward completion; and,
2) verifies that no UMBC-administered financial support is available for the student;
- provide, if employed outside the university, written evidence from the student’s employer indicating the employer’s willingness to reduce job time and duties in order for the student to participate in the Fellowship;
- submit a dissertation abstract of no more than two pages in length; and
- submit a 1-2 page management plan signed by the Chair of the Dissertation Committee describing the status of the dissertation work, the steps required to complete the work, and the feasible time line for completion.
Applications for Fall 2015 Dissertation Fellowships will be accepted by the Office of the Associate Dean of the Graduate School until 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 17, 2015. A committee consisting of three members of the Graduate School Leadership Team will review applications and announce recipients of the Fellowship by July 24, 2015. Graduate Assistantship Opportunities
UMBC's Residential Life
Residential Life is opening a search for a Graduate Assistant Coordinator for Facilities, and a Graduate Conferences Coordinator. Both postings are 20 hours a week, 12-month positions that include tuition remission, on-campus housing, 10 meals a week while the university is in session, and a financial stipend as compensation. If you know of a new graduate student or a potential candidate for one or either position, please encourage them to apply!
Graduate Assistant Coordinator, Residential Facilities
- Assist with the supervision of Maintenance Assistants (12), summer Project Assistants (25) and an Office Assistant (1).
- Assist with development, coordination and implementation of Safety and Security program planning.
- Assist with publications and educational components for Residential Facilities (fliers, workshops).
- Serve as a liaison with Physical Plant Project Managers on designated projects or tasks.
- Provide feedback to the Assistant Director about facilities issues and performance of paraprofessional staff and resident student concerns.

Graduate Conferences Coordinator
- Attend regular UMBC Events meetings, and weekly during peak summer season
- Recruitment and selection of summer staff members
- Aid in facilitation of summer staff meetings
- Serve on the summer conference on-call duty rotation, as well as the facilities grad on-call rotation
- Collaborate with campus partners (Dining, Campus Card, Commons, etc.)
- Support departmental initiatives

Critical Heritage Studies (CHS) is a dynamic and evolving field of research and inquiry. In general terms, CHS can be viewed as a movement to examine and interrogate the power dynamics of defining, making and using ‘heritage’ from the local to global levels.

Dr Stefano has proposed a session that includes include a diverse range of perspectives, and to provide an opportunity for articulating the connections, overlaps, and differences between current work in N. America and the critical heritage studies discourse.
