The conference is hosted by Smith College and the Five Campus Consortium (Smith College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Amherst College). This will be the first time the International Conference will be held in the Western Hemisphere, and we are thrilled to have an opportunity to bring the international community to the United States.

As we have watched the events of the Fall of 2014 in the United States unfold regarding issues of race and social justice, we wanted the conference to reflect the current events by focussing on a principal theme of Youth and Activism. Our goal is to hold a one day youth summit in conjunction with the 2.5 day conference, a portion of which will be integrated to join the two events. In addition, we will be inviting an exploration of any number of additional themes including the use of Digital Storytelling in public health, curriculum, intercultural and international education, service learning, sustainability and the environment, heritage and memory, participation and social inclusion, as well as new and innovative forms of participatory media.

The conference will host various events in its structure for inclusion of diverse perspectives and voices. While there will be a formal process of juried paper presentation sessions for academics, we will also provide space for practitioners from community settings to present. We will work to have exhibition opportunities for individual digital stories, as well as a number of ancillary workshops, special events, and exhibitions to be held in the period surrounding the conference.

Early Bird Registration ends of Friday, July 31. On August 1, Full registration increases from $195-$295, and student/low income from $75-$100.

To register and pay, just visit log on at dst2015.org, and follow the http://dst2015.org/registration link to payment.

[Please, contact Dr. Bickel if you are interested in attending this event]

Take a Dissertation Break at the UMBC Mind Spa

Need a place to achieve career-life balance? A place to de-stress, relax, and rejuvenate? Come to the Mind Spa.

The Mind Spa offers several resources, including, but not limited to: a massage chair, and oil diffuser, a biofeedback device, books, and a meditation area. Photo Credit: Shawnisha Hester

The Mind Spa is a room that offers a stress-free environment to anyone who visits. The ceiling is covered with fabric, giving the perception of clouds. Upon entering the room, there is a welcoming small table with a teapot, paper cups, and assorted tea bags. At each corner of the room, there are three different relaxation resources. In one corner, there is a meditation area where the floor is covered with fabric and cushions. At another corner is a full body massage chair. In the third corner, there is a computer connected to an EmWave device, biosensors that clip onto your fingers to measure your heart rate. On the computer, you can play games and guided simulations, such as breathing techniques, where the EmWave device would provide biofeedback as a measure of the participant’ stress level and inside harmony. Inside this room, there are also other resources to provide a calm, stress-free environment: sandboxes, stress-free balls, small plants, vertical paper lanterns, and an oil diffuser.

Services from the Counseling Center are open to all registered UMBC students. Everyone (including faculty, staff and administration) can feel free to stop by and check out the amazing Mind Spa! The Counseling Center is open Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. There are no fees and no limits as to how many times you access these resources! Feel free to walk in and use the resources at The Mind Spa, or, reserve a resource in The Mind Spa in advance by calling 410-455-2472.

We learned about The Mind Spa through Dr. Susan Han and Dr. Emilie Stuber-Lawson, who served as guest speakers for the PROMISE AGEP’s Dissertation House at UMBC earlier this week. Learn more about the beneficial resources that the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Counseling Center has to offer. Located between the Susquehanna Hall and the Chesapeake Hall dormitories on campus, the Counseling Center provides free counseling services to the entire UMBC community, including: individual counseling, couples counseling, and group counseling. If you are unsure about setting up a counseling appointment, fear not! There is an “Interactive Screening Program” on the Counseling Center’s website (http://counseling.umbc.edu/resources/) where you can anonymously contact a campus counselor.

For students who are writing a dissertation at other universities, we encourage you to check your campus Counseling Center. Similar resources may be offered at your university.

It is my pleasure to be one of the many mentors for Kavita Krishnaswamy, a graduate student in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at UMBC. Kavita’s doctoral advisor is Dr. Tim Oates. Kavita has participated in many programs that have been sponsored by the National Science Foundation, including NSF GRFP, ACCESS STEM, LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate, CMU/Pitt Quality of Life Technology Center – Engineering Research Center, and the PROMISE AGEP.

I’ve been working with Kavita for several years, through classes, her proposal, her internship, etc. Kavita is a joy. In a post a few years ago, I wrote, about how Kavita doesn’t let Spinal Muscular Atrophy stop her. She says, “I can, I will.” https://renettatull.wordpress.com/2011/01/04/grad-student-with-spinal-muscular-atrophy-excels-kavitas-story/.
