UMBC leads the alliance that consists of all 14 colleges, universities, and regional education centers in the University System of Maryland, four community colleges, and a former NSF Model Institution of Excellence Hispanic Serving Institution in Puerto Rico. PROMISE has been a critical catalyst for increasing enrollment, retention, and graduation rates of underrepresented minorities. The program also will contribute to the higher education literature on retention and professional development for graduate students and postdocs. The Rotating Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Professors-in-Training program for Maryland’s institutions (including Master’s serving institutions, HBCUs, community colleges, and an HSI) are among the innovations that respond to AGEP’s call to support the national goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who will enter academic STEM careers.

To learn more about PROMISE please visit the program's website.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
(Un)Masking Masculinities:
Constructing and Deconstructing Representations of Masculinities

We all incorporate into our individual identities features of various culturally gender constructed identities. In particular, children and others struggling to come to terms with their sexuality may well be confused by the many and often conflicting representations of gender that they encounter throughout the broader culture. How are these "masks" of gender identity constructed? Which masks distort or corrupt the individual who wears them? Do some masks actually elevate the individual and help him become increasingly healthy and productive?

The construction and effects of gender identity are best approached through collaborative efforts. Scholars from all academic disciplines need to find ways to design their research projects so that practitioners find the results of that research useful, and practitioners need to find ways to help scholars understand and investigate the range of issues they encounter in their work. Furthermore, scholars from every discipline-the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences-need to find ways to support each other in their efforts to discuss, examine, and/or deconstruct existing definitions of masculinity or to begin to construct new definitions.

Proposal Types

Individual Papers / Thematic Panels / Applied workshops / Posters

Popular culture and the fine arts (paintings, drawings, sculpture, photographs, films, music, theatre, television, radio);

Literary, philosophical, historical, and religious texts;

Studies in the social sciences from all around the world.

To learn more about the conference and this call for proposals, please visit the AMSA's website.
