Critical Questions in Education Conference Registration for the 11th Annual conference is open The Academy for Educational Studies will have its 11th Critical Questions in Education Conference in Baltimore on November 2-4 at the Hyatt Inner Harbor Hotel.

The conference themes for this conference are:

Teaching the disciplines: How are we doing?

What is it we want students to know and understand from, or about, the disciplines we teach, at both the K—12 and university levels? What are the truths the different disciplines aspire to reveal—the big questions they ask and try to answer, the perfection they seek to attain? How well do K—12 and university teachers convey these truths or give students access to them?

Why don’t we read serious books anymore?

Should we care that so many students, and so many teachers, can’t or don’t want to read books—not just at the K—12 level, but in colleges and universities, too?

GRAD Lab is GEM’s first programmatic offering for undergraduates! Launched at the 30th Anniversary Conference in June 2006 to outstanding participant reviews, GRAD Lab offers underrepresented students exposure to the benefits of research and technology careers in a highly interactive one-day event.

Speakers may range from current graduate students to senior managers to faculty and senior administrators. They are selected from diverse communities and disciplines to present on the following topics:

  • “Why Graduate School”
  • “How to Prepare for Graduate School”
  • “Understanding the GEM Fellowship”, and
  • “Voices From the Field: Real Life Research and Internship Experiences”

GRAD Lab encourages young people of color to consider graduate engineering or science education and applying for the GEM fellowship. Focusing on the global importance of research and innovation, life-long career benefits, and real world role models the symposium will help each student envision his or her future as a technology leader, successfully apply for a GEM fellowship, and gain entry to a graduate program. Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: This is my first semester at UMBC

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Coordinator of Student Life for Fraternities and Sororities

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: Advise the fraternities and sororities as well as their respective governing councils.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I truly enjoy working with the students here at UMBC.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: I would say that the most important thing I have learned in my time is that everyone has a story. Each person is unique in the story that they have lived. These differences are important to each person and make us who we are.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: Last year I had the privileged of being a staff leader for the Alternative Winter Break trip to Kitty Hawk, NC with the fraternity and sorority members of the Rutgers community. While in North Carolina, our group worked with the Nature Conservancy to help keep the delicate ecosystem of the Outer Banks in balance by preventing erosion and promoting the growth of plant life. Participants on the trip saw firsthand the effects of human development upon climate change concerns and the fragile ecosystems that exist along the coasts around the world.

A: Ice hockey.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: So far my favorite spot on campus is in the Student Organization space in the Commons. I enjoy this spot because I get to see so many students as they help make positive change here at UMBC.

Poulomi's tweet demonstrates that she's participating in two UMBC traditions. The first is creating a UMBC Bucket List of all things you aspire to do during your time here. The second is actually doing those things.

Early September is the time for Bucket List-making. In my 12 (now 13) Septembers at UMBC I've made many lists, and then checked off many items: I've toured the roof of the Administration Building with President Hrabowski, seen performances in two venues in the Performing Arts & Humanities Building, written a post that got more than 400 paws on MyUMBC (it was April Fool's Day), participated in a campus flash mob, had photos I took published in The Retriever Weekly and on the UMBC home page, developed and taught a course, shared my research and campus projects at national conferences, and earned a Ph.D. (and so became a UMBC alum, in addition to being a staff member).

This session is designed for faculty seeking external funding for arts and humanities research and scholarship. Participants will learn about the process for preparing and submitting external funding applications at UMBC.

Topics will include:
  • campus resources for locating, preparing, and routing grant and fellowship applications;
  • developing timelines and budgets;
  • submitting applications.

Time will be given for Q & A and (brief) discussions of project ideas.

Lunch provided. Registration is required by October 5, 2015 (enrollment: 25)

Cross-Pollinated Hybrid Art Abuzz
Exhibition at Towson University

This exhibition addresses cross-pollination in the arts through metaphor with an emphasis on digital and kinetic media linked to processes found in the natural world. Ideas from one field germinate and take root in another. Interdisciplinary artists fly between a variety of media, and boundaries break down. The artists featured in this exhibition are agents of change, often carrying seeds of inspiration from one art form to another and from the field of science to that of the visual arts.

Artists included in this exhibition are regional national, and international: Nicky Assmann; Rebecca Black and Bill Tomlinson; Lee Boot; Elizabeth Demaray with Ahmed Elgammal, Qingze Zou and Simeon Kotchoni; Juan Fontanive, Billy Friebele, Kelly Gallagher, Ariana Gerstein; Clarissa Gregory; Ruth Hayes; Amy Hicks, Dennis Hlynsky; Douglas Hudson; Gina Kamenstky; Alison Reiko Loader and Christopher Plenzich; Monteith McCollum; Brandon Morse; Patuxtent Wildlife Research Center, Allison Schulnik; and Nadav Wiessman. Curated by Lynn Tomlinson.

Dr. Craig Saper documented (with video and photographs) a group's art-for-science-research work in this exhibit. His documentation is called Puppets For The Birds … and concerns Whooping Crane training.
