Dresher Center Faculty Working Groups in the Humanities
Call for Applications for Groups Forming in Spring/Fall 2016
The Dresher Center invites applications for new Faculty Working Groups in the Humanities. Faculty Working Groups are collaborative, interdisciplinary communities of scholars working on humanities projects, research concerns, or matters of public interest. The Dresher Center provides support for the formation and first-year activities of these groups in an effort to promote intellectual exchange and support research activities in the humanities among scholars across campus. Working groups meet regularly and may also use their funds to travel to sites or archives, host speakers, explore technologies, create new resources or materials, or other similar activities.
Faculty Working Groups can apply for up to $1,000 in annual support ($500 per semester) for their first-year activities. Priority will be given to groups with at least one member from a humanities department.
Deadlines for best consideration are November 1, 2015 for groups beginning in spring 2016 and April 1, 2016 for groups beginning in fall 2016.

Dresher Center Session at Imaging America Conference
Micro-Talks on Engaged Humanities Research on 10/3/15
Participants in the Imaging America National Conference (9/30/15-10/3/15), hosted by UMBC and co-sponsored by MICA: Maryland Institute College of Arts and Morgan State University, are invited to attend "From the Global to the Local: Micro-Talks on the Power of Place in the Humanities." The session, presented by the Dresher Center for the Humanities, will be held on October 3rd from noon-1:00 p.m. in the Dresher Center (PAHB 216).
UMBC faculty and Dresher Center Fellows will present short talks on their research projects that received support from the Dresher Center. These faculty include: Nicoleta Bazgan, MLLI; Preminda Jacobs, Visual Arts; Nicole King, American Studies; Denise Meringolo, History; and Kimberly Moffitt, American Studies. Humanities Scholar Kelly Wan, Global Studies and Financial Economics, will present with Dr. King.

The Art and Power of "Weaving Our We"
September 30th - October 3rd

Have you been wondering how to connect your learning, teaching, research, and work to meeting society’s complex challenges? You’re not alone! This fall, UMBC will host the national conference of Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life. Imagining America is a national consortium of colleges, universities, and organizations dedicated to advancing the public and civic purposes of arts, humanities, and design.
From September 30 to October 3, 2015, join faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, community organizers, and artists from all over the country who use scholarly, artistic, social, and entrepreneurial resources to address pressing challenges. As we collectively find new footing in our examination of real-world issues, Imagining America provides a source for information and ideas in support of engaged undergraduate and graduate pedagogies, public scholarship, and institutional-change initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity to see what this work is all about and meet scholars from across the nation—and it is happening right in the center of Baltimore City, and here on the UMBC campus!
Imagining America chose UMBC as the 2015 conference host six months before the nation turned its attention to Baltimore in the wake of Freddie Gray’s death. Our selection is a testament to the long record of powerful civic work underway at UMBC, and to campus leaders’ commitment to fostering civic agency, engaged scholarship, and a culture of innovation and inclusive excellence. UMBC’s Imagining America planning team, consisting of staff, faculty, alumni, and graduate and undergraduate students, has been leading a conference organizing process that includes Baltimore grassroots organizations, non-profit organizations, and other Imagining America university partners MICA, Morgan, and Towson to ensure sustainable impact in Baltimore beyond 2015. Post-conference organizing is already underway!

Tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor: Communicating and Organizing
The Department of Communication in the College of Media, Communication, and Information (CMCI) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applicants for a tenure track position as an Assistant or Associate Professor. We seek a colleague who will enrich our commitment to the study of social problems that matter (i.e., relevant concerns regarding the relation of social and material worlds). We prefer candidates who prioritize the development of communicative explanations of organizing practice, and who exemplify both theoretical and empirical agility. Topical interests may include (but are not limited to) the character of work amid contemporary capitalism; digital technologies in the context of work and organizing; communicative, immaterial, and affective labor; globalization and transnational flows of organizing; social movements; financialization; governmentality; alternative modes of organizing; and matters of difference such as dis/ability, queer, and postcolonial relations.
The position involves 40% research, 40% teaching (i.e. 2 courses per semester) and 20% service, and it will start August 2016. PhD is expected at the time of appointment, and salary will be commensurate with the level of experience. The Dissertation Fellowship is designed to provide doctoral candidates at UMBC an opportunity to devote the necessary concentration and attention towards finishing the writing of their dissertations. The Fellowship is specifically designed for students with full-time jobs off-campus, for those without any financial support who are making steady progress with their writing, and for whom having additional time and resources would permit them to complete the process more expeditiously. This Fellowship is not available as an option for students with available graduate assistantship support.
The Dissertation Fellowship could provide promising doctoral candidates with financial support so that they may reduce their current obligations and partially offset any reductions in salary or increases in expenses. No additional work assignments other than work on the dissertation are to be associated with this support.
Priority will be given to students who demonstrate that the Fellowship will allow them the needed time to complete their writing and to make revisions in time to defend the work within a realistic but expeditious time frame. Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated a commitment to provide at least 20 hours per week for an entire academic semester to writing the dissertation.
Dissertation Fellowship awards are available for Spring 2016. The duration of an award is for one semester. The maximum level of support for Spring is a total stipend of $8,239.88 per Fellowship plus tuition remission for two credits of 899.
To be considered for a Dissertation Fellowship, the Ph.D. candidate must:
- be in good academic standing;
- provide a letter of support from the Chair of the Dissertation Committee that
1) describes the state of the dissertation and the probable impact of receipt of the Fellowship on the progress toward completion; and,
2) verifies that no UMBC-administered financial support is available for the student;
- provide, if employed outside the university, written evidence from the student’s employer indicating the employer’s willingness to reduce job time and duties in order for the student to participate in the Fellowship;
- submit a dissertation abstract of no more than two pages in length; and
- submit a 1-2 page management plan signed by the Chair of the Dissertation Committee describing the status of the dissertation work, the steps required to complete the work, and the feasible time line for completion.
Applications for Spring 2016 Dissertation Fellowships will be accepted by the Office of the Associate Dean of the Graduate School until 4:30 p.m., Friday, October 30, 2015. A committee consisting of three members of the Graduate School Leadership Team will review applications and announce recipients of the Fellowship by November 6, 2015. The United States will elect a new President in 2016, and Maryland will elect a new U.S. Senator and other officials. The Maryland primary election will take place Tuesday, April 26, 2016, with early voting starting Thursday, April 14, 2016. Take a few minutes to register to vote in the 2016 national election, in Maryland or any other state, using these tools:
Maryland Voter Registration Application (download a paper form, or use the Maryland Online Voter Registration system). If you're already registered but have moved since the last election, you can use the Maryland Voter Registration Application to change your address. The deadline to register before the 2016 Maryland primary election is: April 5, 2016.

Request an absentee ballot: If you will not be able to vote during early voting or on election day, you can request an absentee ballot using the online registration application. The deadline to request an absentee ballot for the 2016 primary election is: April 19, 2016, for ballots delivered by mail or fax; April 22, 2016 for ballots delivered via Internet. Completed absentee ballots must be received by local election boards by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, April 26, 2016. The Best of UMBC 2015

Let's help each other make UMBC ours. Think about the best activities, courses, dining options, places, student organizations, campus services, musical groups, etc. you've experienced at UMBC. "Best" is entirely a matter of opinion, of course. Now, identify up to three categories and name UMBC's "best" in each category.
David's "Best of UMBC 2015" List:
- Best Glimpse of UMBC's Future Growth: This website.
- Best Way to Spend Five Days During Winter Break: The STRiVE student leadership retreat (applications will be available in October). I always return to UMBC extremely inspired, and write about my experiences: The Power of Becoming Visible (2015), True Story (2014), Transforming the Here and Now (2013), The Last Secret of STRiVE (2012); Four Days to Synergy (2011).
- Best Quirky UMBC Feature You Probably Didn't Know About Yet: The new, circular campus welcome plaza near the Administration Building features the word "Welcome" inscribed in bricks in 80 languages, including Retriever ("Woof").
Craig's "Best of UMBC" List:
- Best Change in UMBC's Operating Hours: Keeping Starbucks in the University Center open during Summer 2015.
- Best Off-Campus Work Space: Atwater's in Catonsville (particularly the upstairs).
- Best UMBC Athletics win since I've been at UMBC: UMBC Men's Soccer's upset of College Park in the second round of last year's NCAA Men's Soccer tournament.

The Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education invites to their 7th Annual Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education Conference. The conference titled Building Just Communities, will explore contemplative approaches to creating and sustaining just communities: approaches that foster connection while recognizing and honoring difference, with a commitment to the common flourishing of all. These approaches should examine the profound ways in which our social locations within higher education–based on age, gender, sexual orientation, discipline, ability, religion, race, social/economic class, nationality, contemplative tradition–affect and are affected by differing levels of advantage or disadvantage. As we recognize our interdependence and our responsibilities to one another, we can cultivate more ethical, compassionate, and more socially just communities.
The conference will be held at Howard University in Washington, D.C.,
October 8-11, 2015. Register now–registration closes September 30th!

Applied linguistics and TESOL program
Position: The Applied Linguistics and TESOL Program at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking a scholar with demonstrated scholarship and teaching experience in PreK-12 TESOL education. We are particularly interested in individuals whose area of expertise lies primarily in content and language integration, including, but not limited to, pedagogical strategies in mainstream classrooms; linking mainstream content learning, core standards, and English language learning; collaboration between ESL teachers and content-area teachers; ESL teaching in the content areas; and ESL training of content teachers.
Responsibilities: Provide leadership in the program’s TESOL K-12 track. Teach graduate courses in some of the following areas: PreK-12 TESOL pedagogy, teacher observation and supervision, classroom-based research, curriculum design, materials development, and literacy. Supervise PreK-12 student teachers. Advise masters and doctoral students. Collaborate with teachers in schools. Participate in program administrative and development activities.
Qualifications: Earned doctorate in TESOL or Applied Linguistics; evidence of scholarly accomplishment in PreK-12 TESOL education; a record of successful experience working with PreK-12 ESL teachers and students; service to the field of TESOL and/or Applied Linguistics.
