Spring 2017 Dissertation Fellowship

<Tagline>Applications Due Friday, November 4, 2016</Tagline>

The UMBC Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship

Application Deadline: Friday, November 4, 2016

The Dissertation Fellowship is designed to provide doctoral candidates at UMBC an opportunity to devote the necessary concentration and attention towards finishing the writing of their dissertations. The Fellowship is specifically designed for students with full-time jobs off-campus, for those without any financial support who are making steady progress with their writing, and for whom having additional time and resources would permit them to complete the process more expeditiously. This Fellowship is not available as an option for students with available graduate assistantship support.

The Dissertation Fellowship could provide promising doctoral candidates with financial support so that they may reduce their current obligations and partially offset any reductions in salary or increases in expenses. No additional work assignments other than work on the dissertation are to be associated with this support.

Priority will be given to students who demonstrate that the Fellowship will allow them the needed time to complete their writing and to make revisions in time to defend the work within a realistic but expeditious time frame. Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated a commitment to provide at least 20 hours per week for an entire academic semester to writing the dissertation.

Dissertation Fellowship awards are available for Spring 2017. The duration of an award is for one semester. The maximum level of support for Spring is a total stipend of $8,448.00 per Fellowship plus tuition remission for two credits of 899.

To be considered for a Dissertation Fellowship, the Ph.D. candidate must:

be in good academic standing;

provide a letter of support from the Chair of the Dissertation Committee that

1) describes the state of the dissertation and the probable impact of receipt of the Fellowship on the progress toward completion; and,
2) verifies that no UMBC-administered financial support is available for the student;

provide, if employed outside the university, written evidence from the student’s employer indicating the employer’s willingness to reduce job time and duties in order for the student to participate in the Fellowship;

submit a dissertation abstract of no more than two pages in length; and

submit a 1-2 page management plan signed by the Chair of the Dissertation Committee describing the status of the dissertation work, the steps required to complete the work, and the feasible time line for completion.

Applications for Spring 2017 Dissertation Fellowships will be accepted by the Office of the Associate Dean of the Graduate until Friday, November 4, 2016. A committee consisting of three members of the Graduate School Leadership Team will review applications and announce recipients of the Fellowship by Friday, November 11, 2016. Selection will be based on the extent of convincing evidence that the award will provide the critical element need to complete the dissertation

There was no "Quad" when UMBC opened in 1966 because there were not enough buildings to form one. The open field adjacent to the Academic Building (now part of the Biological Sciences Building) and the Multi Purpose Building (later Gym I) was eventually called "the Mall."

The Lecture Hall (now commonly called Lecture Hall 1) stood between the Academic and Multi Purpose Buildings. To create the 1967 photo below, the photographer stood on what is now the Commons Terrace and pointed the camera toward the the Mall. The foreground of the shot includes Gym I (on the left) and the Lecture Hall (on the right).

We went back to where the photographer must have been standing (though the elevation is different now) and took a matching shot.

The Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership (TLPL) in the College of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park invites applications for an open-rank tenured/tenure-track position in Learning Sciences/Learning with Technology with primary responsibilities in the Technology, Learning and Leadership specialization. This will be a joint position with the College of Information Studies (Maryland’s iSchool), with the tenure home in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. Located in the Washington, DC-Baltimore corridor, the University of Maryland, College Park is the flagship research university and a land grant institution committed to rigorous research, quality teaching and informed public service. The TLPL Department and the iSchool are deeply committed to equity and excellence, embrace a broad range of theoretical and methodological orientations, value collaborative research and encourage faculty to work across program divisions and specializations. Therefore, all relevant specializations are welcome.

The successful candidate (a) has published (or has demonstrated potential to publish) in leading refereed journals, conferences and respected professional outlets; (b) has a vision for conducting research that spans the Department and iSchool, (c) can develop collaborative relationships with diverse colleagues in the university and with school systems, state agencies, research institutes and policy networks; (d) has a record or vision for securing external funding; (e) is strongly committed to the diversity mission of the TLPL Department and iSchool; (f) has a record of internal and national service, depending on the level sought; and (g) can contribute to the preparation of scholars, teachers, and educational leaders. Candidates should have a doctorate by the time of appointment. Research specializations that include new and emerging learning-related areas, such as policy, digital media, maker spaces, Computer Science teacher education, and learning analytics, are of particular interest.

The Technology, Learning and Leadership (TLL) specialization is interdisciplinary, encouraging collaborative work, not only between the TLPL Department and the iSchool, but also with Computer Science and other disciplines in the University. Currently, faculty conduct research in several areas, including computational thinking, gaming, STEM education, assessment, mobile technologies, and wearable technology. Faculty in this specialization area have a strong track record of procuring research funding. Regular, collegial meetings for faculty and students across the university are hosted by The Center for Science and Technology in Education in the TLPL Department and the Human-Computer Interaction Lab in the iSchool. As the TLPL Department and iSchool are committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community, candidates are encouraged to identify their experiences in working with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students, and their contributions to a climate of inclusivity.

Responsibilities will include teaching and advising Masters and Doctoral students in the TLL specialization and in the iSchool, teaching undergraduate preservice teachers, and leadership in the TLL program area.

All applications will be processed through the University of Maryland eTerp2 system. For best consideration, applications are due by October 15, 2016, but will be accepted until the position is filled.
Best Memories from UMBC's 50th Anniversary Weekend

<Tagline>I do not want to forget ...</Tagline>

by David Hoffman

Last Monday, Co-Create UMBC featured a "Then & Now" post in which Craig Berger and I re-created a couple of old photos taken at the site of UMBC's original breezeway. In the foreground of a 1969 photo was a young couple. Their remarkable story had appeared on the Retriever Stories site, which is where I had first come across the photo. On Friday night, I was volunteering at the Student Events Board's outstanding Really Really Big Bingo Event:

My job was to stand near the food and tell people that the line could go on both sides of the buffet tables. There were dozens of round tables for the bingo players spread across the floor of the Retriever Activities Center, but only one was close to where I was standing. When the food line died down for a moment, I leaned over to greet a bearded man sitting at that table with his back to me. I guessed he was an alum from UMBC's early years, and was curious about his story. He said he graduated in 1970, and had met his wife (who was getting food at that moment) when they were both UMBC students. And ... I recognized him! He was the young man from that 1969 photo (see below). We had a great conversation about his time at UMBC and his life since.

On Saturday morning, I posted a Facebook status mentioning that I hoped I'd cross paths with Diane (Juknelis) Tichnell, class of 1970, who had written a remarkable reflection for UMBC's first Commencement program. And that's exactly what happened: We literally crossed paths on the UC Plaza, and I got to spend a few minutes learning the story of that text (which she'd had just 15 minutes to write, and never felt completely confident about) and UMBC's earliest years. Here's that reflection:

    (Source: Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery Digital Collections).

At the end of the Roots of Greatness Luncheon in the UC Ballroom, we all stood to sing the UMBC Alma Mater. I've been hearing and singing the Alma Mater for 10 years (it was introduced at UMBC's 40th anniversary celebration), but in that Ballroom on Saturday, standing with faculty, staff and students from UMBC's earliest years, I was really moved by it for the first time. That second verse rang so very true, and felt so well earned: "Throughout the ages, our UMBC, songs and memories will echo with true clarity. Knowledge and wisdom and truth we found here, friendships we treasure that will last through the years ..."

As Craig and I have been creating the Then & Now series, we've visited various spots on campus, trying to figure out exactly where some long-ago photographer stood, picturing the old buildings and walkways as they must have been. On Saturday I saw alumni from decades past attempting almost the reverse: living in their memories of the old buildings and walkways, and trying to figure out where they were standing now. I stopped to talk with a few, and heard stories that opened new windows on UMBC's past. One of them: a 1984 grad I met on the Commons Terrace was here for the construction of the new wing of the Biological Sciences Building (creating the breezeway). As we looked at that structure, she recalled that for weeks there were serious problems with construction workers catcalling female students as they walked past.

Many of the students I've known in my 13 years here came back, and connecting with them was almost overwhelming: so many stories I wanted to hear, so many memories stirred, and too little time for a deep dive. Most powerful were the reflections of graduates who see clearly how they're making use of what they learned as student leaders. Connecting them with current students, many of them experiencing similar challenges or holding the same positions, was thrilling. My list of alumni with whom to follow up, and ideas about how to tap their wisdom and insights, is long. I wish we had had more time. I wish we could be together in one place whenever we wanted.

The 13 years I've been at UMBC represent a decent fraction of the entire history of the university (and a somewhat larger fraction of my lifetime). That's long enough that I'm often the person in the room with institutional memory: the bearer of history. Sometimes I feel old, like an ambassador from a lost time. But not during the anniversary celebration. To the people who walked UMBC's paths before the concrete was poured, and who helped to create the culture and conditions that seem so natural we don't think of them as having starting points, I'm a latecomer. That's humbling and inspiring at the same time. We stand on the shoulders of giants, but we all can be UMBC pioneers.

What are the experiences from UMBC's 50th anniversary celebration you don't want to forget?

I'll submit all responses to UMBC's 50th anniversary time capsule, which will be sealed in a few weeks and opened 50 years from now, on UMBC's 100th anniversary.

Fifty years ago today (also a Monday), UMBC opened its doors. At the first Commencement in 1970, graduating senior Diane Juknelis described that moment this way:

"On September 19, 1966, while work continued on partially completed
    structures on a large tract of land between the communities of
    CatonsviIle and Arbutus, people and events began their work on an
    identity for UMBC. A named, but as yet faceless institution of higher
    learning waited motionlessly for the element of humanity that would
    shape its inner structure and give it a true direction and scope."

The element of humanity. The first of us.

The first photo below was taken on a stairwell in what was then called the Academic Building, on that very first day; the second, fifty years later (in what is now called the Biological Sciences Building). The difference in the views out that window tells a small part of a great story still being written.

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is pleased to announce that the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2016 Solicitation 2. Applications are due 5:00pm ET on Monday November 21, 2016.

Starting from 2015 Solicitation 2, the SCGSR program is open to graduate students with Permanent Resident status, in addition to U.S. Citizens, who meet all other eligibility requirements. Detailed information about the program, including eligibility requirements and access to the online application system, can be found at: http://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/.

The SCGSR program supports supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for a period of 3 to 12 consecutive months—with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission.

The SCGSR program is open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions, who are conducting their graduate thesis research in targeted areas of importance to the DOE Office of Science. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis/dissertation while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories. The supplemental award provides for additional, incremental costs for living and travel expenses directly associated with conducting the SCGSR research project at the DOE host laboratory during the award period.

The Office of Science expects to make approximately 50 awards in 2016 Solicitation 2, for project periods beginning anytime between June 1, 2017 and October 2, 2017.

Since its inception in 2014, the SCGSR program has provided support to about 160 graduate awardees from over 75 different universities to conduct thesis research at DOE national laboratories across the nation.

The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS), in collaboration with the six Office of Science research programs offices and the DOE national laboratories, and the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE).
