Event: Carole McCann: Figuring the Population Bomb

On
November 11, 1959, the television broadcast CBS Reports: The Population
Explosion presented nine million viewers with the facts of the world
population crisis, saying “its volatile ingredients are statistical.”
Rebroadcast a year later to an even larger audience, the report
investigated an issue that fueled public anxiety about potential war,
famine, and related doomsday scenarios. Drawing from her new book, Figuring the Population Bomb: Gender and Demography in the Mid-Twentieth Century,
Carole McCann traces the genealogy of the statistics that underwrote
the midcentury panic about population growth. She illuminates the
gendered geopolitical grounds and affective commitments of the
specialized mathematical culture that composed the figures of the
population explosion. The talk traces the inferential logics by which
demographers’ quantification practices configured women’s bodies,
especially women of color, as excessively fertile by nature; defined
that fertility as the singular cause of growth; and installed the
demographic transition to low fertility as necessary for modern citizens
and nations. Those population figures, she argues, circled the globe,
moved nations to intervene in women’s reproductive lives, and continue
to haunt struggles to secure reproductive justice.

    Bio: Carole
McCann is Professor and Chair of the Department of Gender + Women’s
Studies; Affiliate Professor of the Language, Literacy and Culture
Program; and Special Assistant to the Provost for Interdisciplinary
Activities at UMBC. Her research focuses on transnational feminist
theory and science studies. Her publications include four editions of
the highly regarded anthology, Feminist Theory Reader: Local and Global Perspectives, co-edited with Dr. Seung-Kyung Kim (Routledge Press, 2003, 2010, 2013, 2016), and Birth Control Politics in the United States, 1916-1945
(Cornell University Press, 1994, 1999). Her newest book, Figuring the
Population Bomb: Gender and Demography in the Mid-Twentieth Century, is
part of the new Feminist Technosciences series from
the University of Washington Press, co-edited by Banu Subramaniam and
Rebecca Herzig. It will be available in December 2016.

Aiyda Evans goes "viral" with her Undergraduate Students

We want to share with our LLC community news about a Social Justice Project that Aiyda Evans (Cohort 19) has carried out with her students at Morgan State University in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology.

Aiyda organized a studentd led staff to chair the “Social Justice Mannequin Challenge Time Capsule,” which is a platform for students at Morgan State University to express their social concerns especially in the aftermath of the presidential elections of 2016. On November 18th, 2016, an important number of students collectively staged a “Mannequin Challenge,” which has been trending and has over 50K shares, likes, and views across social media platforms. Here is the youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHsJzOeUtjQ&feature=youtu.be

The Baltimore Sun has recently reported about this performance. You can read the article here: http://tinyurl.com/jl9gz2z.

In a reflection about her involvement in this project, Aiyda said “I am so grateful to have the opportunity to impact the lives of my students in a positive way. I truly believe that sociology is a discipline with the power to change minds and lives for the better of all society. I also believe that educators have a responsibility to "Teach Well" because it absolutely matters! I am so excited for my students. They really have "changed" their minds - and now see that they do have the power to make the world listen to their concerns. Our work however, is just beginning - we still have much to do!"

Congratulations Aiyda!

Dissertation House Application Procedures

Both the on-campus setting and the retreat setting provide Dissertation House participants with productive and rewarding scholastic engagement. Students who participate in this program will spend each day thinking, writing, and sharing ideas about their doctoral dissertations. Students will learn effective time-management skills; learn how to set small manageable goals, and will meet with a dissertation coach in one-on-one consultations to discuss and address obstacles that might prevent them completing their degrees.

The Dissertation House period can span either a Tuesday – Friday (9 a.m. – 5 p.m., non-residential) or a Friday – Sunday weekend (includes evening sessions) commitment to focus on the doctoral dissertation. The Dissertation House activities focus on areas where students typically have difficulty: conceptualizing a topic, writing a literature review, transitioning from a proposal to a dissertation, analyzing data, writing the last chapter, and editing.
Students may apply to attend the next Dissertation House during open application enrollment, by submitting two parts of an application.

PART I:

I. Submit a brief description (maximum 2 pages, font size 11-12 point 1 inch margins) that describes the project that you wish to accomplish during the Dissertation Houseperiod. Applications will neither be reviewed nor accepted outside of the application enrollment period.

PART II:

II. Please use the following guidelines for the application:

(1) Summary of the project, including research question(s), data or texts, and method

(2) Amount completed on the project to date

(3) Any obstacles that you are encountering that hinder completion of the dissertation.

(4) Include the following header information with the description:

Name

Address

Telephone numbers (home, office, and fax)

E-mail address

Academic Program and Year in the program

Dates/Location: January 19 to 22th (Tuesday – Friday), 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Dissertation House will be held in COMM 329 (for Dissertation House) and COMM 332 (for one-on-one sessions).

Application Enrollment Period: Application can be submitted within a designated 2-week period, usually scheduled 1-2 months prior to the next Dissertation House session. Email applications to promisestaff@gmail.com. Please use the words “Dissertation House” in the subject line of your email.

Selection Process: Eighteen participants will be selected for participation in the Dissertation House. The following applicants will have priority: (1) Applicants who plan to finish the Ph.D. within the next 6 months; (2) Individuals who are working on dissertations and theses rather than a proposal; (3) Applicants who submit earliest; and (4) Individuals who appear most able to benefit from the services offered at the Dissertation House.

If your application is accepted, you will receive an acceptance notice via email and additional details about the Dissertation House. All students, including those who have not applied or those who are not selected, have the option to participate in the next online challenge, a virtual version of the Dissertation House: https://dissertationhouse.wordpress.com/blog-online-challenge/winter-2016-challenge/
