The Peace and Justice Studies Association (PJSA) invites you to its 2017 Annual Meeting. As peace scholars, educators, and activists, we are challenged to rise up and present a new vision, a new strategy, a new engagement of our culture, that will create new relationships and a movement of Justice and Peace for the 21st Century. Please note, only proposals submitted by registered conference attendees will be reviewed for inclusion on the program. May 1st has been historically linked to international workers’ rights. More recently, May Day has served as a national day of action to raise awareness about immigration rights and the need to keep families together as they fight for a better life.

On this May Day, let’s come together as a community to recognize the contributions immigrants make every day to UMBC and our nation.

Students, Staff, Faculty, Service Workers, Administrators: Join us on May 1st, 2017 for a day-long celebration in the plaza in front of the UC.

Regardless of where we were born, how we look or the language we speak, let’s pledge support to a strong, inclusive, safe UMBC for all.

We will create and share the many ways immigrants contribute to UMBC (and the U.S.).

We invite our LLC Community to the roundtable discussion "Women in Activism", organized by the Women's Center. This discussion features Dr. Bev Bickel, Jacki Stone (cohort 18), and Iman Said (student activist).

The panel will take place on April 20th, 4:00 pm, at the Women's Center Lounge, located in The Commons, ground floor.

Dr. Christine Mallinson has recently produced a 5-minute podcast titled "The Revelatory Power of Language," for the Maryland Humanities Council's "Humanities Connection" series for WYPR 88.1. In this podcast, Dr. Mallinson shares what our word patterns can reveal.

The Dresher Center for the Humanities invites applications for two Residential Faculty Research Fellowships for spring 2018. Funding is intended to support and promote significant humanities research at UMBC. Dresher Center Research Fellows will reside at least one day a week in the Dresher Center and receive release from teaching (up to two course releases) in order to work on a significant humanities research project or the training necessary to embark on such a project. Faculty wishing to develop expertise in a new field or discipline towards a future project are also encouraged to apply. Each fellow will have the use of a private office in the Dresher Center and will be awarded $500 to hire an undergraduate research assistant (junior or senior) for the semester.

All full-time, tenured and tenure-track faculty members pursuing humanities research in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences are welcome to submit a proposal. Applications are especially encouraged from, but not limited to, full-time faculty with appointments in departments and programs with a humanities focus. Two fellowships are available. Proposals will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board, with decisions by mid-July 2017.
