Student Events, Free of Charge: A UMBC Origin Story

by David Hoffman

I'm still a newcomer to UMBC relative to many faculty and staff members, but my 14 years here represent a decent fraction of the entire history of the institution. One of the enormous benefits of those accumulating years is that I have had the privilege of witnessing and participating in so much change. The world can appear static in a snapshot, and a university can seem like so many bricks long-ago mortared into place. Yet UMBC's people have been making and remaking this community all along.

The turning point in establishing one long taken-for-granted feature of UMBC student life occurred ten years ago tonight, at one of the first meetings of the newly created Student Government Association Finance Board. It had been SGA's practice to allow student organizations to charge UMBC undergraduates for admission to their events, even when SGA funded the entire cost of the event. The Finance Board, which had been created to represent the interests of the entire student body, viewed that practice as double-charging students (once through the Student Activity Fee, and again at the event). So at their meeting on the night of September 25, 2007, the Finance Board established a new practice: If SGA funds an event, UMBC undergraduates have to be admitted free of charge. Although it has never been formally written into policy, that precedent has guided Finance Board decisions in all the years since.

Nearly all student organization-hosted events are now free to UMBC students, and for the current generation of undergraduates, it has always been that way: as well-established a feature of campus life as the long climb to the Walker Avenue Apartments or the scarcity of optimal parking spaces on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Students appear more willing than their predecessors from an earlier age to take the risk of showing up at an event outside of their comfort zone: to try something new.

So today I'm celebrating the work of a group of students from a decade past, and cheering the difference-makers--students, faculty, staff and administration--actively shaping UMBC today, both for ourselves and for the people who will walk in our footsteps.

CFP: Mini-Conference on Digital Sociology

<Tagline>Baltimore, February 22-25, 2018</Tagline>

Mini-Conference on Digital Sociology

Call for Abstracts

Eastern Sociological Society

Baltimore, February 22-25, 2018

In keeping with the Eastern Sociological Society’s theme of “As Time Goes By: Social and Institutional Change” the Digital Sociology Mini-Conference seeks papers that address the intersection of time and the digital. The mini-conference especially welcomes theoretical interrogations of temporality, and examinations of the role of the digital in social and institutional change. We also seek abstracts, and wholly constituted panels, on a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, the following themes:

Critical Theories of the Digital & Temporality: How have we theorized the digital and time? What challenges do digital media platforms change our relation to temporality?

Digital Sociological Methods: How do traditional, analog sociological methods become digital? Are there new, “born digital” sociological methods? Is knowledge production different now? Will big data replace survey methodology?

Digital Structures, Digital Institutions: The datafication of everyday life is posing unique challenges to the composition of social institutions and giving rise to new instantiations of education, finance, labor, and governance. How do we theorize, study, and reconceptualize these institutions?

Identity, Community, and Networks: How do sociological concepts of micro and macro, personal and public, “front stage” and “back stage,” evolve as digital and mobile technologies increasingly blur these boundaries? How do digital environments shape identities of race, gender, sexuality and queerness? And how do the identities of those who create the platforms we use shape the platforms? How do race, gender, sexuality and queerness shape the communities and networks in which we participate?

We encourage submissions from scholars at all levels, and are particularly enthusiastic to support the work of graduate students and early career researchers. We welcome submissions for individual papers and for entirely constituted sessions. The organizers share a commitment to creating a field that honors diverse voices, and as such are excited to see scholars from groups that are typically underrepresented in sociology. When proposing entirely constituted panels, please keep this commitment to diverse voices in mind.

If you have any questions about proposals, topics, or session ideas please contact one of the organizers: Leslie Jones (lesjones@sas.upenn.edu), Rachel Durso (rdurso2@washcoll.edu) or Jessie Daniels (jdaniels@hunter.cuny.edu).

For individual presentations, please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words, as well as the title of the paper, name of presenter, institutional affiliation and contact details.

For wholly constituted sessions, please include a short description of the concept behind your session, and then include all of the abstracts (along with names and affiliations of presenters) in one document.

Please use the ESS submission portal (www.essnet.org) and indicate that you would like to have your paper (or panel) included in the Digital Sociology Mini-Conference. Use keyword: "mini-conference digital sociology".

Proposals not accepted for the Mini-Conference will be submitted to the ESS general call for submissions.

The HERA conference program committee invites proposals for presentations at the 2018 conference. The program committee’s theme is designed to incorporate any and all possible connotations: the history and development of the humanities, the changes in the humanities over time, the triumphs of and threats to the humanities, the importance of the humanities, the challenges to the humanities. Also included within the theme is the idea of humanities and humanities education being enriched and enlivened by commitment and dedication from all age levels, spanning the lives of individuals as well as history.

The HERA conference program committee maintains that individuals engaged in research and education in all fields of the humanities and liberal arts and sciences carry forward the humanities through the ages into the future. We call for papers that explore continuity and change, form and function, courage and fear, voices and unspoken presences from any individual fields of study. Our work and its vitality validates our common pursuit.

The wide-ranging span of the Humanities provides the finest range of approaches and methodologies to explore the vast array of concepts and themes within the humanities throughout the world. HERA seeks your contributions concerning the explorations of identity, image, and voice within any aspect of the Humanities. The 2018 HERA Conference theme is intentionally seeking disciplinary, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scholarship exploring voice and vision from the local to the global.
