<Title>Baltimore Museum of Art Event - May 17</Title>

    <div class="html-content">In the second of a three-part series at the Baltimore Museum of Art called <em>Necessity of Tomorrow(s)</em>, Ta-Nehisi Coates, author of Marvel Comic's <em>Black Panther</em> series, will be appearing with BMA Director Christopher Bedford for a public discussion about the current cultural moment.<div><br></div>
    <div>LLC's Professor Christine Mallinson will be there as a sociolinguist, giving her take on language change and social justice in an interactive segment called New Words for a New Future. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The event is from 6 - 10 pm on May 17 and is free and open to the public on a first-come first-serve basis.     <div class="html-content">"Walls, Gates and Bridges: Exploring the Challenges and Opportunities of CBL Through Creative Practice" is an all-day workshop to help introduce the concept of Community-Based Learning to faculty, staff and community partners who may not be familiar with it.  Additionally, it will help faculty already engaged in CBL to reflect on their current practices.<div><br></div>

    <p>The School of Engineering at Campbell University (<a href="http://www.campbell.edu/engineering/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.campbell.edu/engineering/</a>, <a href="http://www.campbell.edu/about/history-quick-facts/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.campbell.edu/about/history-quick-facts/</a>) seeks three Engineering Faculty for full-time, tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. One position in Mechanical Engineering begins Fall 2018 and is focused on teaching the thermal, energy and fluid sciences. Two positions (one in Mechanical Engineering, focused on teaching a common senior design sequence, and one in Electrical Engineering, focused on teaching sophomore and junior-level courses) begin in January 2019. Campbell’s BS in Engineering program (with concentrations in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and electrical engineering) welcomed its inaugural first-year class in fall 2016. These positions present faculty with a unique opportunity to provide leadership in building an innovative engineering program and the prominence of the new School and University.</p>

    <p><strong>Responsibilities</strong></p>
    <p>Duties will include: develop, implement and teach project-based engineering curricula; actively participate in the scholarship of teaching and learning; engage in student advising, student organizations, assessment, accreditation activities, and committee responsibilities. Applicants should be interested in contributing leadership toward the development of the engineering program. Candidates must be committed to innovative engineering undergraduate education; dedicated to excellence in undergraduate teaching, mentoring students, and scholarship; and committed to the University’s mission.</p>

    <p><strong>Qualifications</strong></p>
    <p>Candidates are required to have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, respectively, or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited institution of higher education; experience developing and teaching project-based engineering curricula; and knowledge of the current practices and research pertaining to innovative undergraduate engineering curricula.</p>

    <div>On May 17, 1968 in Catonsville, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, two women and seven men, three in clerical attire, arrived at the Selective Service office, Local Board 33, located in the Knights of Columbus building. They seized several hundred A-1 draft records from the office, dumped the files on the ground in the parking lot, doused with homemade napalm, and torched them in protest of the Vietnam War. This act of civil disobedience intensified protest against the draft, prompted debate in households in Maryland and across the nation, and stirred angry reaction on the part of many Americans. It also propelled the nine into the national spotlight.</div>

    <div>The Catonsville action reflected not only the nature of the Vietnam antiwar movement in 1968, but also the larger context of social forces that were reshaping American culture in the 1960s. We are commemorating the 50th anniversary of this historical and fiery protest with a new exhibit utilizing the artwork of Catonsville Nine participant Tom Lewis, as well as historic photographs and materials, video from the award-winning 2013 documentary Hit &amp; Stay, and other materials. </div>

    <div><span><strong>Joe TropeaActivism and Art Curator</strong></span></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Joe Tropea earned a Master¹s in historical studies with a concentration in Public History from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is currently the Curator of Films &amp; Photographs at the Maryland Historical Society, where he creates exhibits, writes and edits the blogs underbelly and Aspect Ratio and co-founded and serves as the project manager for Preserve the Baltimore Uprising Archive. Tropea is the co-director of the award-winning 2013 documentary, Hit &amp; Stay, and the director of 2018's Sickies Making Films.</div>

    <div><strong>Lynne Sachs</strong></div>
    <div><strong><br></strong></div>
    <div>Lynne Sachs is an experimental filmmaker who makes films, videos, installations and web projects exploring the relationship between personal observations and broader historical experiences. After graduating from Brown University and majoring in history, she developed an interest in experimental documentary filmmaking while attending the 1985 Robert Flaherty Documentary Film Seminar. "Investigation of a Flame" won several awards and debuted at the Maryland Film Festival in 2001.</div>

    <div><strong>Joanna Raczynska </strong></div>
    <div><strong><br></strong></div>
    <div>Joanna Raczynska earned her master's degree in documentary by practice from Royal Holloway College, University of London (2001). She first started making non-fiction films and videos in 1996, while a student at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Her works have screened internationally and across the US, most recently at ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany. She has worked for a variety of non-profit organizations including Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo NY (media arts director, 2002-2006), the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Now she works in the department of film programs at The National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. Thomas Lewis, artist, teacher, and peace activist, was born in Maryland and was 28 at the time of the Catonsville Nine action.</div>

    <div><strong>ABOUT THE ARTIST</strong></div>
    <div><strong><br></strong></div>
    <div>Thomas Lewis was active in the civil rights movement and was a founding member of the Baltimore Interfaith Peace Mission. He was one of the "Baltimore Four," who poured blood on draft files at the Baltimore Customs House in 1967. Lewis did much of the up-front preparation for the Catonsville action, scouting the location of A-1 draft files and routes in and out of the building on the pretense of wanting to rent the Knights of Columbus basement for his wedding reception.After serving prison time for the Catonsville incident, Lewis continued to be active in the peace movement and to retain close ties to the Catholic Worker Movement.</div>

    <p><strong>Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III </strong></p>
    <p>Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, President of UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) since 1992, is a consultant on science and math education to national agencies, universities, and school systems. He was named by President Obama to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. He also chaired the National Academies’ committee that produced the report, <em>Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America’s Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads</em> (2011). His 2013 TED talk highlights the “<a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/freeman_hrabowski_4_pillars_of_college_success_in_science" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Four Pillars of College Success in Science</a>.”</p>
    <p>Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by<em> TIME</em> (2012) and one of America’s Best Leaders by <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report</em> (2008), he also received TIAA-CREF’s <em>Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence</em> (2011), the Carnegie Corporation’s <em>Academic Leadership Award</em> (2011), and the <em>Heinz Award</em> (2012) for contributions to improving the “Human Condition.” UMBC has been recognized as a model for inclusive excellence by such publications as <em>U.S. News, </em>which the past eight years has recognized UMBC as a national leader in academic innovation and undergraduate teaching. Dr. Hrabowski’s most recent book, <em>Holding Fast to Dreams: Empowering Youth from the Civil Rights Crusade to STEM Achievement</em>, describes the events and experiences that played a central role in his development as an educator and leader.</p>

<Title>Inclusion Imperative 2018-2019 Visiting Faculty Fellows</Title>

    <strong>Dr. Katherine Bankole-Medina</strong>, Professor of History, Coppin State University, and <strong>Dr. Theresa Runstedtler</strong>, Associate Professor of 
    History, American University, have been awarded full academic year 
    fellowships to advance their research while in residence at the Dresher 
    Center. Dr. Bankole-Medina’s project, “African Americans as Specimens, 
    Objects, and Agents: Race and Clinical Care in the Maryland Medical 
    Journal, 1877-1918,” is a 40-year account of the lives of African 
    Americans, drawn from the Maryland Medical Journal. Dr. Runstedtler’s 
    project, “Black Ball: Rethinking the “Dark Ages” of Professional 
    Basketball,” explores the intersection of blackness, masculinity, labor,
     and criminalization through the lens of 1970s professional basketball.<br><br><img src="https://gallery.mailchimp.com/8d6f2ab4368f091484f80fa94/images/d57a4ee3-adda-439b-ac23-426424f54461.png" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"><br><br><br>The
     Visiting Fellows join the Dresher Center, a robust humanities center 
    environment that holds public events and symposia, grants workshops, and
     works-in-progress talks, and hosts UMBC residential faculty fellows and
     graduate fellows. Each Visiting Fellow will partner with a UMBC faculty
     member with shared research or teaching interests to broaden and deepen
     the exchange between fellows and the campus community. Fellows receive 
    generous stipends and research support, as well as access to the Dresher
     Center’s administrative and research development services and campus 
    resources.<br>
    <br>
    The Inclusion Imperative is a major five-year initiative promoting 
    diversity and inclusive excellence in the humanities. Through the 
    Inclusion Imperative, UMBC, in partnership with Bowie State 
    University, Coppin State University, and Howard University, is 
    cultivating a regional network of scholars, who are committed to 
    diversity and inclusion in the humanities. These fundamental 
    partnerships guide the Inclusion Imperative’s three programs: the <a href="https://dreshercenter.umbc.edu/inclusion-imperative/visiting-faculty-fellowship-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Visiting Faculty Fellowship Program</a>,
     the Diversity Teaching Network in the Humanities, and the Humanities 
    Teaching Labs. The Inclusion Imperative programs support and expand 
    community-engaged humanities research, teaching, and learning focused on

SECOL is dedicated to the advancement of the study of language in all its aspects, and their annual conference provides a venue for SECOL members to read and discuss scholarly papers. <div><br></div>

<Title>Remembering Dr. Cedric Herring</Title>

    <span>Dr. Cedric Herring, Professor and Director of the Language, Literacy, and Culture (LLC) doctoral program, passed away on April 22, 2018. All of us who knew him—his colleagues in LLC and across the university and his students—are deeply saddened by this loss for the UMBC community and for the multiple communities of scholars Dr. Herring inhabited.</span><br><br>Our deepest condolences are with Dr. Herring’s family, especially his wife and our colleague Dr. Loren Henderson, and his children. Dr. Herring was with us far too briefly, but his scholarship and his voice will continue to guide and motivate our unfinished work for many years to come.<br><br>Dr. Herring joined UMBC in 2014 as an established leader in the field of sociology. After earning his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, he began his academic career at Texas A&amp;M University. In 1990 he joined the department of sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois. He was founding director of UIC’s Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy and of the University of Illinois’s Race and Public Policy program. Over three decades, he published eight books, more than 70 articles and book chapters, and more than 15 monographs and policy reports, as well as numerous book reviews and editorial essays. He also was a principal investigator or scholar on grants totaling more than $2.2 million. He received many prestigious awards and fellowships from the Joyce Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the MacArthur Foundation, among others.<br><br>Dr. Herring served as president of the Association of Black Sociologists in 1994-1995. At UMBC, he became director of the Language, Literacy, and Culture program in 2015, served on the faculty senate, and chaired the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Black Faculty Committee. He and Dr. Henderson, assistant professor, Sociology, Anthropology, and Health Administration and Policy, also won a Hrabowski Innovation Fund award for “The Baltimore Metropolitan Area Study on Race, Inequality, and the City.” Students and colleagues in the LLC program knew him as a generous mentor who cared deeply about building community within the program and across the university, as he did in every setting.<br><br>Dr. Herring’s research has been essential to UMBC’s striving for inclusive excellence, especially in hiring a more diverse faculty and challenging institutional culture. His most recent book, <em>Diversity in Organizations: A Critical Examination</em> (2014, co-authored with Dr. Henderson) provides quantitative and qualitative evidence that a diverse workplace brings tangible benefits to organizations, including universities. In a series of related articles in scholarly journals, Dr. Herring and Dr. Henderson demonstrate that the same conclusions apply to university departments in diverse disciplines. Equally important, the research and related articles argue that “critical diversity” requires more than inclusive hiring practices and outcomes and that true change occurs only when organizations look within themselves to challenge the internal practices and norms that perpetuate inequality, oppression, and stratification.<br><br>Dr. Herring’s scholarship has been at the core of UMBC’s STRIDE program (Strategies and Tactics for Recruiting to Improve Diversity and Excellence). Dr. Herring was especially interested in the study of racial wealth disparities and in the application of interventions to alleviate the most pernicious effects of social stratification. He ardently championed thinking broadly, boldly, and systematically about removing the racial and cultural blinders that undermine human progress.<br><div><br></div>
