Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier

A proposal for a research grant in this program must focus on advancing fundamental understanding of future work, and potential improvements to work, workplaces, workforce preparation, or work outcomes for workers and society. It must be convergent research that addresses the technological as well as the human and societal dimensions and potential impact of future work, and in doing so, make significant contributions to both intellectual merit and broader impact. Achieving this goal requires integration and convergence of disciplines across computer science, engineering, learning sciences, research on education and workforce training, and social, behavioral, and economic sciences. A convergent perspective is essential to understand and shape long-term social and economic drivers, so that advanced intelligent technology will strengthen the social fabric. A convergent perspective also provides insights into education and re-skilling, so that the benefits of emerging technology can be conferred upon all citizens.

Next Deadline: March 6th, 2019

The Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI Program) seeks to enhance the quality of undergraduate STEM education at HSIs and to increase retention and graduation rates of undergraduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at HSIs. In addition, the HSI Program seeks to build capacity in undergraduate STEM education at HSIs that typically do not receive high levels of NSF grant funding. The National Science Foundation (NSF) established the HSI Program in response to the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2017 (P.L. 115-31) and the American Innovation and Competitiveness Act (P.L. 114-329). The HSI Program is aligned with NSF’s commitment to increase access for underrepresented groups to the Nation’s STEM enterprise.

In designing the HSI Program, NSF sought community input by several mechanisms (https://nsf.gov/ehr/HSIProgramPlan.jsp) and has continued to gather community input to inform future components of, or modifications to, the HSI Program.

To be eligible for HSI Program funding, the institution serving as the awardee organization must, at the time of application, be accredited, offer undergraduate educational programs in STEM, and satisfy the definition of an HSI as specified in section 502 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1101a). Institutions should review the legislation before certifying their eligibility for this program (http://legcounsel.house.gov/Comps/HEA65_CMD.pdf).

The HSI Program will accept proposals in two tracks:

Track 1: Building Capacity funds projects up to $2,500,000 for up to 5 years and is open to all eligible institutions. This track has three priority areas: Critical Transitions; Innovative Cross-Sector Partnerships; and Teaching and Learning in STEM.

Track 2: HSIs New to NSF funds projects up to $300,000 for up to 3 years and is open only to eligible institutions that have never received NSF funding, or that have not received NSF funding in the five years preceding the proposal deadline.

The HDR vision is realized through an interrelated set of efforts in:

Foundations of data science;

Algorithms and systems for data science;

Data-intensive science and engineering;

Data cyberinfrastructure; and

Education and workforce development.

Each of these efforts is designed to amplify the intrinsically multidisciplinary nature of the emerging field of data science. The HDR Big Idea will establish theoretical, technical, and ethical frameworks that will be applied to tackle data-intensive problems in science and engineering, contributing to data-driven decision-making that impacts society.

Harnessing the Data Revolution: Transdisciplinary Research In Principles Of Data Science (HDR TRIPODS) aims to bring together the electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics, and theoretical computer science communities to develop the theoretical foundations of data science through integrated research and training activities. Phase I, described in this solicitation, will support the development of small collaborative Institutes. Phase II (to be described in an anticipated future solicitation, subject to availability of funds) will support a smaller number of larger Institutes, selected from the Phase I Institutes via a second competitive proposal process. All HDR TRIPODS Institutes must involve significant and integral participation by researchers representing at least three of the four aforementioned communities. Please note that the ordering of the four communities is alphabetical and is not meant to emphasize any one discipline over another.

SEEDS Graduate Student Survey!

The Ecological Society of America is seeking your help to reach your graduate students particularly from underrepresented minority groups for a brief survey. Kindly forward the following information to them.

The Ecological Society of America’s SEEDS – Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity and Sustainability – program is planning to develop workshops for graduate students, with priority to ESA SEEDS alumni and alumni of other diversity programs for underrepresented minority communities. Our goal is to develop the support network during the first few years of their MS or PhD programs and to provide opportunities to deepen and enhance new professional and scientific skills. For the first workshop, we are looking to team up with the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC). The mission of SESYNC is to bring together the science of the natural world with the science of human behavior and decision-making to find solutions to complex environmental problems.

We have created a short survey aimed at being able to gauge the interest on this type of activity and what kinds of future workshops we should be offering. The survey takes less than 5 minutes to complete and your input is very valuable to help us serve you better. Please complete the survey by February 15, 2019. If you have any questions about this survey, please contact us.

Thank you for your help!

Session with Retriever Courage consultant team

<Tagline>Feb 7th</Tagline>

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

As we announced earlier this month, a procurement committee of faculty, staff, and students has selected consultants Jody Shipper, J.D., and Cherie Scricca, Ed.D. of Grand River Solutions, Inc. to help UMBC address how our community can better prevent and respond to sexual violence/misconduct. This marks an important next step in our Retriever Courage initiative, in addition to early action steps completed by Retriever Courage partners.

On February 7, Shipper and Scricca will be on the UMBC campus for the first time, to hold initial meetings with the Implementation Team and Title IX staff. In order to give the UMBC community the opportunity to share input, Shipper and Scricca will hold an information gathering session on February 7, from 4 to 5 p.m., in the Proscenium Theatre, Performing Arts and Humanities Building.

Shipper and Scricca will return to UMBC on February 21, 22, and 28, and March 1, for meetings with Retriever Courage partners, as well as with campus groups that they and Retriever Courage partners have identified. Shipper and Scricca will hold another information gathering session for the UMBC community during this time, and we will update the campus when details are confirmed.

The information gathering sessions will start with a brief introduction to the consultants and their proposed work on campus. Then, participants will be invited to share ideas and concerns with the consultants in order to inform their work at UMBC.

Shipper and Scricca will discuss how they plan to work with Retriever Courage partners and the UMBC community throughout the spring semester to review current university processes, policies, procedures, and practices regarding sexual misconduct. They will help determine what is working well and where we can learn from other institutions’ best practices and from evidence-based research. This effort will have a broad scope, beyond the specifics of Title IX alone, also including models for prevention and training for students, faculty, and staff, and best practices for providing support to those impacted by sexual violence.

For those who prefer not to share publicly or are unable to attend either information gathering session, you may use this anonymous Google form and your feedback will be shared with Shipper and Scricca.

Thank you for your commitment to Retriever Courage and for the input and suggestions you are sharing to inform this work. While some important actions are already underway, this work is just the beginning. It is challenging, and it calls for each one of us to be involved, to listen, and to learn from one another so that UMBC will become a stronger community and Retriever Courage can have a lasting impact on the campus and beyond. There are many different ways to be involved, such as joining an advisory committee, participating in educational workshops and training, becoming an advocate for survivors, and committing to being an observant, vocal community member.

We encourage those who have observed or experienced sexual violence/misconduct to seek support as needed at any time. There are many resources available on campus and in the community that offer confidential medical support, confidential psychological/emotional support, and interim protective measures (e.g., no-contact orders, housing adjustments, academic concerns). For emergency situations, contact campus police via 410-455-5555 or local police via 911.

The Implementation Team will continue to share updates on the consultants’ future campus visits and process, additional Retriever Courage progress, and ways to stay engaged.

We wish you a successful start to the spring semester.

—Retriever Courage Implementation Team

Summer Research Opportunity in Social Sciences

<Tagline>University of Maryland, College Park</Tagline>

The Summer Research Initiative (SRI) was created in 1999 by the Office of the Dean in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) and is supported by the Office of the Provost, the Graduate School, the Office of the Vice President for Research and the College. The program is designed to encourage and enhance the diversity of scholars working in the social and behavioral science fields.

In that spirit, we are interested in receiving applications to the program from a broad spectrum of students, including African Americans, Latino/Hispanics, American Indian/Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders, as well as students with research interests related to diverse communities.

The goals of the SRI are to:

Increase the knowledge of, and interest in, doctoral-level training in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences;

Provide rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to learn about graduate studies and the range of research and scholarship in the social, behavioral and economic sciences at the University of Maryland;

Provide a laboratory experience that enhances basic research knowledge and skills;

Provide lectures, workshops, didactic exchanges and other programming to enhance students' knowledge of the graduate application process, negotiating the academic rigors and professional and personal challenges encountered in graduate school, and developing career paths in social, behavioral and economic sciences; and

Provide mentoring and networking opportunities for students to advance their training in the social, behavioral and economic sciences.

The SRI is part of the College's longstanding commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social, behavioral and economic sciences. According to 2016 data from the magazine Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, the university ranks 12th in the country in the number of graduate and professional degrees awarded and 28th in the number of undergraduate degrees awarded to underrepresented minority students. The Summer Research Initiative is an integral part of our efforts.

The application for the 2019 SRI will be available from November 1, 2018 to February 10, 2019. Applications will be reviewed February – March 2019, and selection announcements will be made beginning April 2019.

The actual program runs 8 weeks, from June 3 – July 26, 2019. Students are required to arrive on campus on Saturday, June 1 for mandatory Saturday and Sunday program orientation, but SRI programming will officially begin on Monday, June 3.
