Conference Theme: Harboring Innovation

In the spirit of communicative innovations and the work required to kindle new insights to impact our lives and our relationships, communities and world, the Voices of Diversity Interest Group of ECA invites you to submit your communication related work enveloping the concept of “Harboring Innovations.” With so many powerful events surrounding diversity, inclusivity, and social change, particularly those in Baltimore itself, our voices as communication scholars become more imperative in our actions, relationships, cultures, and communities. 

The purpose of the Voices of Diversity Interest Group is to explore the various theories and practices that pertain to the research, teaching, and study of communication within, between, and among diverse communities.

The Voices of Diversity Interest Group invites completed papers, panels, round table discussions, symposiums, and community programs across communication contexts that explore the pivotal role exchanging ideas plays in creating, maintaining, and changing what we communicate and how we communicate it.

As a committee member, Dr. Beverly Bickel (LLC) is pleased to announce that Ruken Isik, of LLC Cohort 17, successfully and skillfully defended her powerful dissertation proposal on May 30, 2019. Her title is: "Livable, Lovable, Grievable Lives: Kurdish Women Funerals in Turkey-Kurdistan."

Ruken is investigating Kurdish women's activism at the funerals of Kurdish women guerillas and women who are the victims of 'honor crimes' using feminist theory and methodology. The foundational question that this dissertation will address is: What moves Kurdish women to take action at these funeral sites?

Learn how to use R, a free software program for statistical computing and graphics!

 

The Center for Social Science Scholarship is partnering with SAGE Campus to offer a free 30 day Introduction to R for Social Scientists online course.

 

The course will open on June 17.  It takes around 12 hours to complete, and learners will be given 30-day access to complete the course at their own pace.  Course objectives and more information are available here.

 

Enrollment is limited to 5 learners, on a first-come, first-served basis. Email socialscience@umbc.eduto indicate your interest, and please provide your full name, preferred email address, affiliation, and home department.

A new policy for proposal submission is being implemented by UMBC’s Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP).

 

As of August 1, 2019, OSP will require that proposals be received, in a ready-to-submit state, 3 days in advance of the proposal submission deadline. 

 

In addition, on each day at 8am, OSP will review all proposals that are due that day.  If a proposal is not in a ready-to-submit state by 8am on the day it is due, OSP will not send it forward.

 

Please make note that there is no grace period, and no exceptions will be made.  

 

The Maryland Institute for Policy, Analysis, and Research (MIPAR) supports UMBC social science faculty and graduate students by providing researchers with pre-award and post-grant management assistance. 

 

In order to meet the requirements of this new policy, MIPAR must have a PI’s fully completed proposal no later than five days prior to the submission deadline. This includes any documents needed for subawards. More time may be required if the proposal is large or complex.  

 

Please contact MIPAR as soon as you begin to consider preparing a proposal, so that MIPAR staff can help you establish and meet a feasible timeline.

LANSI brings together scholars and students working on naturally-occurring data within the broad area of language and social interaction. In keeping with the LANSI spirit of diversity and dialogue, we welcome abstracts from colleagues working on a variety of topics using discourse analytic approaches that include but are not limited to conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and critical discourse analysis.

Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and include descriptions of the following aspects of the study: 1) problem(s) being addressed, 2) central claim(s), 3) data source(s) and analytic approach(es), 4) a short piece of data to support the main argument, 5) implication(s) of the findings. Please include a 50-word summary. Papers will be presented within a 15 or 20 minute slot with an additional 5 or 10 minutes for discussion.

Deadline for electronic submission is June 15th and notification of acceptance or non-acceptance will be sent via email by July 15th.

Imagining America (IA) is currently accepting applications for its PAGE fellowship program for graduate students from IA member institutions, such as UMBC.

PAGE Fellows Program (Publicly Active Graduate Education)
PAGE Fellows participate in a yearlong working group for collaborative art-making, teaching, writing, storytelling and co-creating knowledge within and for community. Awardees receive a $500 honorarium to attend the 2019 PAGE Summit on October 17th and the IA National Gathering from October 18-20 in Albuquerque, NM.

PAGE Fellows will build capacity in a cohort of publicly-engaged scholars and will join the Imagining America network of activist-scholars, administrators, artists and media makers who are shifting culture toward justice within higher education and society.

As committee chair, Dr. Kimberly Moffitt (LLC) is proud to announce that Sedrick Smith, LLC Cohort 18, successfully and skillfully defended his dissertation proposal on Friday, May 10, 2019. His title is: "Depictions versus Reality: Countering the television mediated narratives of Black teachers in Baltimore." Sedrick will explore the representations of Black teachers in Baltimore City Public Schools and offer a counter-narrative to the narrative constructed of such teachers on the television news segment, "Project Baltimore."
