Undergraduate Research Awards in the Social Sciences

Congratulations to the 2019
Center for Social Science Scholarship
Undergraduate Research Awardees!

Mickayla Bacorn, “Comparing English as a Second Language (ESL) Education and the Importance of Location in the United States and Colombia”
Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication
Mentor: Dr. Tania Lizarazo

The objective of my research is to compare the approach and outcome of English as a second language (ESL) instruction in native Spanish-speaking students between a university in an English-speaking setting, UMBC, and a university in a Spanish-speaking setting, la Universidad del Norte. The purpose is to collect research that will analyze the most useful aspects of second language acquisition (SLA) and its setting.

Rebecca Ferguson, “Homemaking in Baltimore: Centering the Experiences of Black Women and Mapping Community Assets”
Geography and Environmental Systems
Mentors: Dr. Dillon Mahmoudi and Dr. Dawn Biehler

This research seeks to use listening sessions and semi-structured interviews of black women in Baltimore, with the goal to then map the resources (assets) used in homemaking—broadly defined—by themselves and/or their families. By creating a comprehensive map of their access to assets such as housing, food, transportation, and social programs, as well as alternative support systems, this research seeks to reveal the hidden labor that black women produce in making homes and raising children as labor power in the capitalist system.

Genevieve Madden, “Mixed Methods Analysis of Frame Propagation in Current Feminist Social Movements”
Political Science
Mentor: Dr. Ian Anson

My research aims to determine how citizens of the United states are framing their interest in feminism: it will determine if the interest is in economic, political, or social advancements. More importantly, my research will investigate how the public reacts to frames, and how rival frames are effective or ineffective in persuading the public on feminist issues and propagated across time and space.

Inaya Wahid, Ghina Ammar, Ayla Novruz, and Kayla Hinderlie, “Trait Anger as a Moderator in the Relationship between Discrimination and Heart Rate Variability in Emerging Adults”
Psychology
Mentor: Dr. Danielle Beatty Moody

The purpose of this research project is to understand the contribution of trait anger in the relationship between interpersonal-level discrimination and heart rate variability in emerging adults. By studying the relationship between interpersonal-level discrimination, trait anger, and heart rate variability in emerging adults we can better understand how these factors contribute to cardiovascular health processes early in adulthood.

The NASA Postdoctoral Program offers U.S. and international scientists the opportunity to advance their research while contributing to NASA’s scientific goals. The NPP supports fundamental science; explores the undiscovered; promotes intellectual growth; and encourages scientific connections.

Selected by a competitive peer-review process, NPP Fellows complete one- to three-year Fellowship appointments that advance NASA’s missions in earth science, heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics, space bioscience, aeronautics and engineering, human exploration and space operations, and astrobiology.

Current research opportunities can be viewed on-line: https://npp.usra.edu/opportunities/

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in hand before beginning the fellowship, but may apply while completing the degree requirements. U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, and foreign nationals eligible for J-1 status as a Research Scholar, may apply.

Stipends start at $60,000 per year, with supplements for high cost-of-living areas and for certain academic specialties. Financial assistance is available for relocation as well as subsidized health insurance, and $10,000 per year is provided for professional and programmatic travel.

Applications are accepted three times each year:

• March 1
• July1
• November 1

Are you or do you know a “Rising Star”?

Drs. Cynthia Leifer and Hector Aguilar-Carreno in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University have been awarded an NIH NIAID Research Education Program grant entitled “Cornell Program to Increase Faculty Diversity and Promote Research Excellence”.

Several departments within Cornell University have successfully employed targeted pre-interviews on an ad hoc basis to increase the diversity of their applicant pool for faculty positions. This has led to an increase in diverse hires.

An exciting part of our program is that it will allow us to expand what has been done on a small ad hoc basis. We are looking for these “Rising Stars”: URM postdoctoral scientists doing high quality NIAID-mission related research getting ready to apply for faculty positions, to invite them to take part in a pre-interview at Cornell University. The pre-interview will include guidance on how to complete the application and formal interview process at Cornell. While taking part in the Rising Star program cannot guarantee a faculty position at Cornell, we can alert participants to upcoming openings. Any participant offered a position will be paired up with a mentor ambassador who can assist them in their decision. Once hired, the Rising Star will become a participant in the career development portions of the overall grant, which includes courses for skill development, research experience enhancement and mentoring.

To be considered for the Rising Star program, please send a copy of your updated cv, a one page research statement and the contact information for 3 professional references to us at pace@cornell.edu.

For more information about our program please visit our website at https://blogs.cornell.edu/pace/
