2020 National Humanities Conference Call for Proposals due February 21, 2020
The 2020 National Humanities Conference will be held November 5-8 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Co-hosted by the National Humanities Alliance and the Federation of State Humanities Councils, the National Humanities Conference brings together representatives from colleges, universities, state humanities councils, cultural institutions, and other community-based organizations to explore approaches to deepening the public’s engagement with the humanities.

Indianapolis is nicknamed the “Crossroads of America” because of its historic location along the old National Road and current site where four major interstates intersect. In this spirit, we invite proposals that explore the generative, exciting possibilities of public humanities work that happens at the crossroads.

LLC is pleased to announce that J. Inscoe, of Cohort 19, successfully and skillfully presented their dissertation research proposal to their committee on December 12, 2019. Their topic is titled, "Sonic Waves of Grain: Paul Harvey's American Evangelism."

After J.'s presentation, they and their committee had a substantive discussion surrounding their topic and methodological approach. It was determined that their project was worthy of doctoral study and provided useful advice on how to move forward with their research.

We seek proposals exploring, analyzing, teaching, training, and sharing on the theme: Infusing Classrooms and Institutions with Culturally Relevant Pedagogy

We are looking for presentations that acknowledge the classroom as a place for exploring the implications of intersectional identities. Such classrooms recognize student cultural contributions to their own learning, engendering conversations around race, gender, and sexual orientation.

OPEN TO:

• Graduate students
• Faculty and administrators of two and four year colleges • K-12 faculty and administrators
• Community Organizations

UMBC Digital Storytelling Workshop – January 21-22, 2020

The techniques of digital storytelling have become popular in classrooms as a means of self-expression and developing digital literacy skills. In addition, digital storytelling can foster relationships in communities and help to address issues of equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Are you interested in learning the skill of digital storytelling for use in your teaching, research, or work? Join us for a two-day workshop January 21-22, 10am to 4pm.

This workshop is open to UMBC faculty, staff, graduate students and  Inclusion Imperative visiting faculty.

This workshop Includes:

  • Introduction to the process of Digital Storytelling
  • Story development in a group story circle process
  • Script writing and voice recording
  • Digital editing skill development and support
  • Group story screening
  • Tips for teaching DS in your classroom or other settings
  • Lunch both days

Please register here by December 15th. We request that you only RSVP if you are certain that you will be able to attend.

Bring a laptop if you have one. iMacs are also available for your use in the lab.

I’m writing to you today about a special presentation and dialogue being planned at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, focused on Native cultures and languages. Specifically, the Center for Global Education Initiatives, Writing Center, and Office of International Services has officially partnered with UNESCO to join worldwide programming for the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

 

As part of this global effort to raise awareness of Native Nations’ cultures and languages, we are planning “Perspectives in Health, Law, and Human Services: Indigenous Languages and Cultures in Our Practice.” The November 21 program will include keynote remarks on the Indian Child Welfare Act from Rebecca Nagel, Cherokee activist, artist, and language advocate, followed by a panel dialogue with Dr. Gabrielle Tayac, Piscataway historian-curator at the National Museum of the American Indian; Dr. Bayley Marquez, Assistant Professor in the Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, and member of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians; and Dr. Nalini Negi, Associate Professor, University of Maryland School of Social Work. Free food. Begins at 3:30pm. Ends at 5pm.

Also, any proposals due on January 2 - 3, 2020 (the week that we return) also need to be received by MIPAR by November 27, 2019.

The Dresher Center for the Humanities and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) invites applications for Summer Faculty Research Fellowships (SFRF). Funding is intended to support and promote significant humanities research at UMBC. Proposals are welcome and will be considered from all full-time, tenured or tenure-track UMBC faculty pursuing humanities research in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Proposals will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board.

Dresher Center Summer Faculty Research Fellows (individuals or groups) will receive $6,000 support for summer research and assistance in developing extramural funding applications, book proposals, and grant project applications. Funding may also be used for the completion of book manuscripts, major articles, or projects of a similar stature. Between one and three fellowships will be awarded.

Applications are due February 15, 2020.
