Recognizing that findings about programs and practices that reduce inequality will have limited societal impact until the structures that create inequality in the first place have been overturned, the William T. Grant Foundation is particularly interested in research to combat systemic racism and the structural foundations of inequality that limit the life chances of young people. Such research shifts the focal point of change from individuals to social institutions and examines how institutions might be altered to dislodge the deep roots of inequality and develop a way forward toward greater equity.

Irons will be joined by grantees Matthew Desmond (Princeton University) and Cecilia Ayón (University of California, Riverside), who will expound on the different system-level factors at the center of their respective studies, their methodological approaches, and challenges and opportunities for the field.

The Hill-Lopes Scholars Program and Jess and Mildred Fisher College of Science and Mathematics at Towson University present Rita Colwell, Ph.D. as she shares stories from her new memoir, "A Lab of One’s Own: One Woman’s Personal Journey Through Sexism in Science."

“A Lab of One’s Own” documents Colwell’s journey through six decades in science, from sexual harassment in the lab to obscure systems blocking women from leading professional organizations or publishing their work. “A Lab of One’s Own” shares the sheer joy a scientist feels when moving toward a breakthrough, and the thrill of uncovering a whole new generation of female pioneers. Colwell’s writing offers an astute diagnosis of how to fix the problem of sexism in science, and celebrates the women who push back.

Colwell is a groundbreaking microbiologist and the first woman to lead the National Science Foundation, where she served as the director from 1998 to 2004. She is a distinguished professor at the University of Maryland at College Park and at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health.

This event is hosted by the Hill-Lopes Scholars Program at Towson University. Funded by the generosity of Barbara Hill and Ancelmo Lopes, the Hill-Lopes Scholars Program supports women in STEM at Towson University and aims to retain women in the STEM workforce.

In
the U.S., universities traditionally have been viewed as engines of
economic growth and essential for supporting upward mobility — both for
individuals and the nation. However, across many decades, a persistent
counter-narrative has cast doubt on their value. Recently, concerns
about rising tuition, student debt, and job insecurity have bred a
    dystopian view of university education.

Economist
David Card argues that this view ignores a mass of positive data. While
profound challenges confront American higher education, universities
still bring enormous economic benefits to individual students and to the
nation. Empirical evidence shows that the economic rewards for a
college degree are higher than ever. In addition, there are other
benefits, such as better health, a longer life, and potentially more
life satisfaction. Despite these benefits, the U.S. public education
system has expanded very little, especially investment in public
    universities.
