<Title>$100,000 NSF GRFP Fellowship seminar</Title>

    <p>The <a href="https://www.nsfgrfp.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program</a> (NSF GRFP) is available to students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and STEM education (includes some social sciences and psychology fields), and come with a 3-year stipend, worth more than $100,000 for your graduate education (Master's or PhD).</p>

    <p>This event is a two day workshop, Part 2 will be hosted on Saturday, September 11, 2021 from 3PM - 5PM. </p>

<Title>Not Too Late to Get Your Permit</Title>

    <span>As we celebrate the start of another school year, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you that any student, staff or faculty member must have a valid UMBC Parking Permit to park on campus. </span><div><br></div>

    <div>Students may now secure their parking permit at the <a href="https://umbc.nupark.com/v2/Portal/Login?ReturnUrl=%2Fv2%2FPortal" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Parking Portal</a>. Student permits will be valid fthrough August 14, 2022. </div>

    <div>Staff and Faculty (Payroll Eligible) must submit new <a href="https://docusign.umbc.edu/secure/prd/FormToDocuSign/Form2DS.php?cfg=PARK_PayrollDeductionParking" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Payroll Deduction Forms</a> immediately to ensure valid permits can be issued. Parking enforcement staff will enforce parking permits this week.</div>

<Title>May Chung Successfully Defends her Dissertation</Title>

    <div>On August 23, 2021 <strong>May Chung </strong>of LLC Cohort 17 successfully defended her dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy. Her degree will be conferred in December, 2021.</div>

    <div>Her virtual defense went very smoothly and she gave an excellent presentation of her dissertation research, "Mandarin-English Dual Language Education: Understanding Parental Ideologies and Expectations."</div>

    <p><strong>Baltimore Architecture Foundation and Baltimore Heritage kick off Doors Open Baltimore with Dr. Lawrence Brown, author of </strong><em><strong>The Black Butterfly: The Harmful Politics of Race and Space in America</strong></em><strong>. <br></strong></p>
    <p>Fri, October 1, 2021</p>
    											<p>1:00 PM – 2:30 PM EDT</p>
    <p></p>Dr. Brown will 
    put Baltimore under a microscope, looking at the causes of segregation 
    and drawing on extensive research of data and policy. Brown will 
    demonstrate how data visualization can be a tool to distribute resources
     to communities in need, and speak to the roles of design, planning, and
     preservation in healing and restoring redlined Black neighborhoods.<p>Dr.
     Brown’s presentation will be followed by a discussion and Q&amp;A 
    moderated by author and journalist Elizabeth Evitts Dickinson. 
    Participating discussants include:</p>

<Title>Dresher Center Acting Director 2021-22</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Denise Meringolo is the Acting Director for the Dresher Center for the Humanities for 2021-22. She is also an Associate Professor of History and has been the Director of Public History at UMBC since 2006. She is an expert in community based public history practice and <a href="https://inclusivehistorian.com/civic-engagement/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">civic engagement</a>. Her book <a href="https://ncph.org/history-at-work/ncph-2013-book-award/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Museums, Monuments, and National Parks: Toward a New Genealogy of Public History</em></a> (University of Massachusetts, 2012) won the 2013 National Council on Public History prize for the best book in the field. In 2015, she established a crowd-source digital collection, <a href="https://baltimoreuprising2015.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Preserve the Baltimore Uprising</em></a> in order to gather and protect stories of protest and civil disobedience in Baltimore. In 2018, she won a <a href="https://www.whiting.org/scholars/public-engagement-programs/fellowship" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Whiting Public Engagement Fellowship </a>which enabled her to activate the collection to promote community-based, collaborative historical reflection and interpretation. Between 2013 and 2021, she designed and facilitated a large <a href="https://ncph.org/history-at-work/tag/radical-roots/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">collaborative research project</a>, Radical Roots: Civic Engagement, Public History, and a Tradition of Social Justice Activism, which will be published as an open source digital collection of essays by Amherst College Press this winter. She is a member of the Governance Committee of the <a href="https://ncph.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Council on Public History</a>.<br><div><br></div>
