NSF's Build & Broaden Workshop on 10/20 @noon ***REMINDER***

Please join us for a Lunch and Learn information session on Thursday October 20 from noon-1pm about the National Science Foundation’s Build and Broaden program, featuring three UMBC researchers with current Build & Broaden awards.


The Build & Broaden program “supports cutting-edge research, training opportunities and new research infrastructure in the social, behavioral and economic sciences at minority-serving institutions.” 


During the info session, presenters will provide an overview of the program and discuss their ongoing projects, with Q&A to follow.


Presenters:


Christine Mallinson is PI (with Anne H. Charity Hudley, Co-PI, Stanford University) of “Linguistic Production, Perception, and Identity in the Career Mobility of Black Faculty in Linguistics and the Language Sciences” (Awards #2126414 and #2126405). Mallinson is the Director of UMBC’s Center for Social Science Scholarship, Special Assistant for Research & Creative Achievement and APLU-CoR Fellow in the Office for Research & Creative Achievement, Professor in the Language, Literacy & Culture Program, and Affiliate Professor in the Department of Gender, Women’s + Sexuality Studies. 


Morgan Henderson is PI and Morgane Mouslim is Co-PI of “Provider Pricing Behavior and Health Policy” (Award #2222433). Henderson is Principal Data Scientist with UMBC’s Hilltop Institute and Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics. Mouslim is a Policy Analyst with UMBC’s Hilltop Institute.

SEA provides one-week camps for middle and high school students on the UMBC Campus. These camps help kids to stay engaged, have fun learning STEM, and get excited about UMBC.

 These SEA CIRTL Fellows will develop and implement a 1-week course for the SEA in an engineering topic of their choice with guided mentorship in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023, and implement the course with SEA in summer of 2023. Fellows will be required to attend a variety of sessions that help them solidify course ideas, learn about teaching approaches that are accessible and engaging for high school and middle school students, and plan their course. This will all count toward a CIRTL certificate, which is a nationally recognized teaching certificate! Upon teaching the course in Summer 2023, Fellows will be paid a minimum of $700/week for 1 or 2 weeks, with an opportunity for more depending on enrollment for the course. 

Note: Courses are run as half day camps for a week (5 days), and Fellows will be able to choose two weeks of these four options : June 26-30, July 10-14, July 17-21, July 24-28.

Applications are now open for teams of CAHSS faculty to apply to work with Hanover Research professionals!


CAHSS is continuing our partnership with Hanover Research, a grant development and research firm that helps faculty strengthen competitive external proposals to federal agencies and private and non-profit foundations. Teams of CAHSS faculty may apply for the opportunity to work directly with Hanover professionals. 

 

A second round of applications is now open for faculty who intend to submit an external proposal later in Fall 2022 or in spring/early summer 2023. 


Please find the application form here, due Friday, October 14th. Teams will be notified by early November. 


 

For more information about the process and the resources that Hanover provides, faculty are encouraged to view this webinar featuring CAHSS PIs who worked with Hanover this past year.  Please direct any questions to Christine Mallinson (mallinson@umbc.edu), Director of the Center for Social Science Scholarship.  

 

Selection Criteria: 

  • Preference will be given to teams that aim to submit larger, collaborative and/or interdisciplinary proposals to federal agencies (e.g., NSF, NIH) or to foundations. 

  • Each team must have at least one CAHSS tenured/tenure track faculty member. 

  • Faculty with prior collaborative grant experience who are looking to scale up their research are especially encouraged to apply.

The Maryland Board of Elections has placed an official ballot dropoff box in The Commons, meaning members of the UMBC community who are Maryland voters can cast their votes on campus. You will need to be registered and request a mail-in ballot, which you can place in the box after you have completed it.

As of this posting, UMBC is #6 in the United States in the number of pledges to vote made by students through ALL IN to Vote’s Pledge to Vote competition. Take the pledge and spread the word.
