Dresher Center Hours of Operation, Services, and Resources

following Dresher Center specific information is subject to change

Dresher Center Hours of Operation
The Dresher Center will provide support and services remotely for the rest of the spring semester based on the 3/19 guidance from UMBC. The Dresher Center's offices, conference room, and student lounge will be closed until further notice.
Dresher Center Events/Programs
All Dresher Center programming and events for the rest of the spring
semester are cancelled, postponed, or will be hosted in a virtual
format. We will release more information on changes to our programming
as we confirm it. Please continue to monitor our myUMBC page
and your email accounts for information on upcoming virtual workshops,
such as CURRENTS: Humanities Work Now and Fellows and Others. We will
also post about virtual events on their specific myUMBC event page.
Dresher Center Resources
If you haven't already, follow us on social media for more regular
communications and information. As always, you can find recordings of
previous Humanities Forum events on our YouTube channel. You can also
experience some of the Humanities Forum via live-tweets recorded on

Free orientation Trainings for Educators This Friday!
Over the last decade, StoryCenter and WeVideo have collaborated to bring countless professionals, students and the public into the world of digital video editing. For StoryCenter, the focus has been on how story, and storytelling, could transform lives, and assist people with the issues they face, in their lives, their community, and in society as a whole. For WeVideo it has been about broad access and broad literacy for collaborative digital media creativity for educators and others interested in expressing their stories in video. |

In these urgent times, we want to create new ways for people to collaborate and share stories, from wherever they are, across states, countries, and across the world. Toward that end we want to make you aware of efforts by StoryCenter, supported by WeVideo, to create new online programs and activities with the public, for schools, civic and service organizations, small businesses, and the general public.
We have expanded our online offerings, while also developing new projects with various sectors as part of our many programs and initiatives. Working with WeVideo, we want specifically to help people to share their stories and create videos that inspire us all to face challenges ahead, and show us the stories of how people are forging ahead with their lives.
WeVideo has generously offered to extend free licenses to these new StoryCenter's new initiatives in this period, and share with the WeVideo user community about StoryCenter's specific efforts in response to the Covid 19 pandemic to provide scholarships and underwritten projects for all our partners and friends to receive training in WeVideo.
"We are now all listeners," says StoryCenter founder and director Joe Lambert, "we are listening to each other, in our families, at our schools, at our jobs, our social media, through all these remote exchanges, in discussing the many ways COVID 19 is changing our lives. We all have stories that assist us with finding strength and hope, and with WeVideo's support we can give a powerful tool for capturing those stories as digital stories to help all our families and communities."

Montia Gardner Successfully - and Virtually - Presents
her Dissertation Proposal
LLC is pleased to announce that Montia Gardner, of
Cohort 19, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation
research proposal to her committee on March 13, 2020. She was the first LLC student to virtually meet her committee on-line for this purpose.
Her project is titled, "The Capital Concept: The Role of Social Capital in Pursuit of Educational Advancement." After Montia's presentation, she had a substantive
discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work. Her
committee agreed that her project is worthy of doctoral research and
helped her consider some key issues as she moves forward into the
research and writing.

Compliance announcement: Video conferencing for interviews
What to use in place of face to face interviews - COVID-19
Announcement from the UMBC Office of Research Protections & Compliance:
Our office has received several information requests about using virtual/online formats to take the place of previously planned (and IRB approved) in-person interviews conducted outside of campus. Use of such formats may be useful to PIs to conduct human subjects use research during the COVID-19 event.
We checked with Mark Cather of UMBC Department of Information Technology(DoIT). He recommended an online conferencing tool that would provide security and confidentiality which would meet the IRB's requirements for maintaining privacy and ensuring confidentiality. Remember, these are requirements stated in an approved IRB protocol.
The only solution DoIT supports for UMBC investigators is
WebEx. DoIT has certified it up to level 3 (see the IRBs
guidance on security requirements), which means it is good with all data types (including HIPAA). DoIT has several FAQs and instruction guides
posted to assist investigators if there are plans to add to a protocol.
Speaking of which, if an investigator plans to add Webex use to an existing protocol, please be sure to forward a
protocol modification and have it approved
before using.

Spotlight! Guest Instructor Workshop
Are you interested in having more presentation opportunities? Here's your chance...
Two years ago, the Library created the “Spotlight! Guest Instructor Workshop” series. This series is where the Library invites members of the UMBC community to host a single lecture/talk during the academic year. The talk is held in the Library from 12-1pm.
We think this would be a great opportunity for graduate students, particularly those that will graduate soon, to present their content as a
practice version for their defense presentation. Research can be completed or in progress.
The one hour long sessions are held in the Library throughout the academic year during free hour (MWF from 12-1pm) on a date to be determined.
The Library will take care of scheduling and promoting the presentations.
