In this workshop, panelists will share their advice, tips, suggestions, and experiences on how to apply for fellowships in the social sciences and the benefits of participating in such fellowships. Panelists will speak for about 30 minutes, followed by Q&A. This event is geared toward faculty at all ranks, as well as advanced graduate students.

Topics to be covered include:

• Types of fellowships- policy, research, experience, etc.

• Career stage considerations 

• Pros and cons of different fellowships-- full time, part time, etc.

• Relationship of fellowship to scholarly productivity/advancement/promotion & tenure

• What to expect during a fellowship

• What to discuss with your department chair

The Office of Equity and Inclusion and the Inclusion Council is committed to partnering with the UMBC community. We encourage UMBC community members from a variety of backgrounds to participate in these working groups. We specifically would like more graduate student representation in the working groups. As a community, we plan to draw on the leadership and wisdom of our students, alumni, faculty, and staff, many of whom confront these issues every day through their teaching, research, and activism.

LIVING IN THE POST-PLANTATION: HAMPTON HISTORICAL MANSION IN THE CONTEXT OF BALTIMORE COUNTY DEVELOPMENT 

This presentation, by Dr. Samuel Collins Professor of Anthropology and Director of Cultural Studies at Towson University, looks to the legacies of Hampton for life in Baltimore today.  While the plantation system itself is long gone, Hampton’s impact is still being felt.  Decisions about development, zoning and education made during Hampton’s heyday still have a profound influence over the shape of Baltimore County: for example, the continued racial segregation of Baltimore is testament of the power of past structures and beliefs over the course the present.  Hampton National Historic Site is not only a window onto the area’s past, but a key to understanding present and future challenges of both the region and the United States as a whole.

Summer Fellowships!

The purpose of this fellowship is to support significant social science research by tenure-track or tenured faculty in the UMBC College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, resulting in a submittable product by December 2021.

Applications are welcome from any tenured or tenure-track faculty pursuing social science research in any CAHSS department. Fellows will receive a $6,000 award during the summer of 2021. Up to three fellowships will be awarded.

By December 2021, each Fellow agrees to complete a submittable product, which can include an external grant or fellowship proposal, journal article, policy paper, book manuscript, or book chapter; upon completion, Fellows shall provide a copy of this submitted product to the Director of the Center for Social Science Scholarship. Fellows who are preparing an external proposal are expected to work with MIPAR for pre- and post-award assistance.

Interested faculty should complete and submit an application consisting of this downloadable 2-page cover sheet and proposal that adheres to the specified guidelines. The deadline for applications is FEBRUARY 15, 2021.

Applications will be reviewed and ranked by members of the Center for Social Science Scholarship Advisory Board, according to the following criteria:

• Quality of proposed research project;
• Significance of the project in its field;
• Publishing/funding potential of the work;
• Qualification of the faculty member to carry out the work, including the requisite expertise in the topic area and prior research productivity;
• Likelihood that the proposed work can be successfully completed with fellowship support and that it will result in a submittable product within the specified time period;
• Approval and recommendation of faculty member’s department chair.

GSA COMMUNITY LIAISON– GRADUATE ASSISTANT POSITION, 20 hours a week – AY 2020 –2021

The Office of Graduate Student Life (OGSL) is operated by the Graduate Student Association (GSA) to meet graduate students' needs as they pursue degrees at the master’s and doctoral levels in all disciplines at UMBC.

The successful candidate MUST be eligible for Federal Work-Study, determined by the student’s FAFSA (must be a U.S. citizen or a Permanent Resident).

Duties of the Community Liaison:

 Representation

•Facilitates GSA’s community engagement efforts and programming.

•Facilitates communication between GSA, OGSL, graduate students, UMBC University Committees, and the greater UMBC/Baltimore community.

 Graduate Student Organization Support

 •Advises, trains, and coordinates 26-28 Graduate Student Organizations (GSOs) and approves event requests while supporting them in event organization, as needed.

•Maintains a record of expenses of 26-28 Graduate Student Organizations and submits reimbursement requests on behalf of GSO leaders.

•Completes Journal Entries as needed.

•Receives approval from EAA on all student reimbursements and sends documents to accounting for final payment

OGSL Expectations

 •Serves as a member of the OGSL and assists the OGSL & GSA in its mission of supporting and promoting graduate students.

•Collegially supports and assists the GSA Executive Administrative Assistant, the Communications Manager, and the Travel & Research Grants Coordinator.

•Collaborates with the OGSL team & GSA Executive Board to implement GSA’s mission.

•Attends weekly OGSL team meetings, monthly Senate meetings, GSA Social.

Hours, Graduate Student Week events, the Graduate Experiences, Achievements, and Research Symposium, and The Graduate School events. Works 20 hours per week, staffing the office.

•Prepares monthly report for the Executive Councils review and places in Google

Drive/FY21 Reports.

•Maintains and develops knowledge of the Graduate Student Handbook,

The Graduate School policies and GSA policies.

•Other duties as assigned (e.g., assisting with the Graduate Research Conference).

Qualifications & Requirements 

•Must have flexible availability throughout the week to participate in committee meetings and GSA/OGSL events.

•Strong interpersonal, analytical, oral, and written communication skills required; conflict resolution skills desired.

•Knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google applications.

•A commitment to diversity and team building is essential.

•Bachelor’s degree, full-time enrollment in a UMBC master’s or doctoral degree program, and be in good academic standing with The Graduate School.

•May not hold a doctoral degree or have UMBC adjunct faculty status.

•Ability to work independently and as a part of a team is essential.

•A positive attitude, strong time management skills, and a sense of humor are

advantageous.

This is a 20-hour/week assistantship, including tuition remission for Fall and Spring, stipend for Fall and Spring AY 2020-2021, and GA health insurance.
