Dr. Whitehead earned her Ph.D. in 2009 from UMBC, in the Language, Literacy and Culture program.

2020 has been a very difficult year, with the violent deaths of Black men and women at the hands of police and would-be vigilantes and the devastating impact of COVID-19 on the Black and Brown communities. Conversations have been reignited around the country about anti-Blackness and anti-racism, policing and justice. As we move forward, questions remain about what the long-term impact will be on our society and the ways in which we can reimagine our way forward. Dr. Karsonya Wise Whitehead will address these questions and facilitate a larger conversation about systemic racism, engagement, and the current calls for justice.

Become a Winter Orientation Advisor!

<Tagline>Application and Information Sessions</Tagline>

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Winter Orientation Advisors! COVID hasn’t slowed us down at all, and Orientation is proceeding as usual – except 100% online. Advisors use Webex to meet with incoming students one-on-one to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!

Besides compensation, this is an excellent opportunity to gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on the field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience is highly sought-after in faculty openings.

Graduate students are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $25 per advising session, with most Orientation days having opportunities for approximately four sessions.

More details are provided in the application attached, which is due HERE by December 2, 2020. We will also be hosting a number of informational sessions for those who may be interested:

- Thursday , November 12, 12-1 PM

- Monday, November 16, 12-1 PM

- Friday, November 20, 12-1 PM

You can view or register for these events on the Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising's myUMBC page, HERE.

Please reach out to Laszlo Korossy (korossy1@umbc.edu) with any questions, thank you!
