<Title>LLC's New Visiting Lecturer and Course Offerings this Fall</Title>
<Tagline>in Identity and Ethnographic Methods</Tagline>

    <span><strong>Dr. Rebeca Gamez</strong>’s research interests include relational and comparative race and ethnicity, space and place, immigration, and educational inequality, with a focus on how racialized and minoritized youth navigate their schooling, learning, and ethnoracial identities. Additionally, she has a broader interest in English Language Arts teaching and curriculum, teacher education, and critical qualitative research methodologies. She was an American Educational Research Association (AERA) Minority Dissertation Fellow. Prior to earning her doctorate in Education at Johns Hopkins University, she was </span><span>a middle school literacy teacher in Trenton, New Jersey. <span>She also has extensive experience in grassroots community organizing around financial justice, immigrant rights, and educational equity issues. </span></span>

    <p><span>Dr. Gamez will teach two courses this fall for LLC, as well as contribute to programmatic activities and initiatives.</span></p>

    <p><strong><span>LLC 610: Identity as Cultural Practice, Thursdays 4:30 – 7:00 pm </span></strong><span>(hybrid mode)<strong></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>In this course we will define, discuss, and study identity as a cultural practice from the perspective of many disciplines and interdisciplinary fields involved in LLC. From theoretical explorations of the complexities and challenges in current identity scholarship and research to methodological approaches across the disciplines to the praxis of identity research, we will engage in a collaborative inquiry on how identity can be understood as a cultural practice anchored in particular times and spaces. </span></p>

    <p><strong><span>LLC 650: Ethnographic Methods, Mondays 4:30 – 7:00 pm </span></strong><span>(hybrid mode)</span></p>
    <p><span>In this course, we will cover theoretical perspectives, research techniques and design, data management and analysis, and ethical questions pertinent to ethnographic research and qualitative research more broadly. Additionally, we will explore how to engage in ethnographic research in contemporary times, where the arrival of COVID-19 presents new obstacles to conducting ethnographic and qualitative research. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct original qualitative research as it relates to language, literacy, and culture. </span></p>

<Title>#BlackinEnvironment Events during Earth Week</Title>

    <a href="https://www.fushciahoover.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Fushcia-Ann Hoover</a>, an interdisciplinary  researcher who explores social and environmental relationships within an urban setting, is a co-organizer for #BlackinEnvironment.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    The week is meant to highlight, honor and bring 
    attention to Black folx working in environmental spaces, research, 
    advocacy and more. Monday will be a roll call for all Black identified 
    environmentalists to introduce themselves through the BlackinEnviron 
    twitter account. <br>

Participants will learn about how UMBC students, faculty, staff, and alumni can get involved in the lawmaking process and contribute to the civic health of our state. </span></p>
    <p><span>Part of this program will take place in small groups where participants will have a chance to interact with state leaders and each other.</span></p>

     is recognized by the United Nations each year on April 23rd.  UN 
    language days aim to raise awareness about global multilingualism and 
    cultural diversity.</span></p>

    <p><span><br></span></p>
    <p><strong>Constant Leung</strong> is Professor of <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk/people/professor-constant-leung" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Educational Linguistics at King’s College London</a>. His 
    research interests include academic literacies, additional/second language teaching 
    and assessment, language education policy, and teacher professional 
    development. He is Co-Editor of <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/hlaq20/current" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Language Assessment Quarterly</em></a>, Editor of Research 
    Issues of <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/15457249" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>TESOL Quarterly</em></a>, and serves as a member of the Editorial Boards of <em>Australian 
    Review of Applied Linguistics</em>, <em>Language and Education</em>, and the <em>Modern Language 
    Journal</em>. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (UK). His work in developing 
    the English as an Additional Language Assessment Framework for Schools (funded by 
    the Bell Foundation) won the 2018 British Council <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk/news/kings-professor-wins-british-council-award-2" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ELTons international award for innovation</a>.<br></p>
    <p><br></p>
    <p><strong>Francis M. Hult </strong>is Professor and Director of the TESOL program at UMBC. His work at 
    the crossroads of sociolinguistics, discourse studies, and education focuses on 
    language policy, linguistic landscapes, and multilingual education. He serves on the 
    boards of several journals including <em>International Multilingual Research Journal</em>; 
    <em>Language, Culture and Curriculum</em>; <em>Language Policy</em>; and <em>Pedagogical Linguistics</em>. His 
    books include <a href="https://www.multilingual-matters.com/page/detail/?k=9781847693525" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Educational Linguistics in Practice</em></a> (with King) and <a href="https://www.springer.com/gp/book/9783319759623" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Language Policy and Language Acquisition Planning</em></a> (with Siiner and Kupisch). He is editor of the 
    <a href="https://www.springer.com/series/5894" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Educational Linguistics</a> book series for Springer, and together with Ofelia García he 
    edits the <a href="https://www.degruyter.com/serial/CSL-B/html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Contributions to the Sociology of Language</a> book series for De Gruyter.  <br></p>

<Title>Eva Wright successfully Defends her Dissertation</Title>

    <div>On April 7, 2021 Eva Wright of LLC Cohort 15 successfully defended her dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of
     Philosophy.</div>

    <div>Her virtual 
    defense went very smoothly and she gave an excellent presentation of her
     dissertation research, "PTSD and Narration: Traumatic Stories' Impact on Realism in Film and Literature." <br>
