Key Points
- Floors 1 and 2 of the Library & Gallery building will reopen to UMBC users between July 6 and August 15, 2021, with appointments required for some services.
- Curbside pickup of books, laptops, and equipment will continue by appointment in the Library Atrium during this time.
- Beginning August 16, 2021, the Library & Gallery building will reopen all seven floors for general study and computer use, with appointments required for some areas.

Dear UMBC Community,
We are pleased to announce plans for a phased reopening of the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery building to our UMBC users. We thank the dedicated Library & Gallery staff for their continued delivery of services to our community during the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic, and join them in looking forward to welcoming the campus community back to the building!
Beginning July 6, 2021, the first and second floors of the Library & Gallery will be open, with some services requiring an appointment. All UMBC users will be able to access the building via card swipe for limited spaces and services such as the Retriever Learning Center or use of a library printer. UMBC users with campus ID also will be able to make appointments to enter the building to use a variety of library spaces, computers, and equipment. More information about the process for making appointments will be posted on the Library & Gallery’s website and myUMBC page in the coming days.
All Library & Gallery users must follow campus guidelines regarding safe on-campus behavior such as masking and physical distancing; symptom tracking; and testing. No eating is allowed in the library at this time.
As we have since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will continue to offer remote services to assist you with your work, including virtual research appointments, “Ask a Librarian” chat service, virtual information literacy instruction, scanning of materials from our collections, interlibrary borrowing for books and media from our resource sharing partners, a virtual study room, and more.
Beginning August 16, 2021, the Library & Gallery building will reopen all seven floors for general study and computer use. Appointments may still be required for some services and areas. More information about fall semester services will be posted to the Library & Gallery website soon.

The GSA is seeking applications for senators who will serve throughout the next academic year. Such senators would have the following general responsibilities as they represent either their college or the general (cultural/non-academic) interests of all graduate students at UMBC:
1) Attend monthly meetings of the Graduate Senate between August 2021 and May 2022.
2) Host town hall with other Senators between August 2020 and May 2021 aimed at gathering input and feedback from graduate students
3) Serve on at least one university committee
4) Other tasks as assigned by the Graduate Senate or Executive Council (such as following up on an issue or comment)
Senators who fulfill these responsibilities will be eligible to receive a stipend of $200 per semester.
Note that as the campus remains closed, the GSA Senate will plan to conduct business virtually (this will include meetings, town halls, events, etc.). As any changes are announced, the GSA Executive Council will be sure to keep the GSA Senate informed. Stay tuned for updates through spring/summer as we transition into the fall semester and thank you for your interest in serving on the Graduate Student Senate!

Credit Split - Attention CAHSS Faculty
Kuali Credit Split Required beginning July 1
Effective July 1, 2021, we will be required to enter Credit Split information into Kuali at the proposal stage. Your proposal will error if this information is not completed correctly. These errors will prevent your proposal from being routed for approval in Kuali.
Below is a link to documentation to assist you in understanding and completing Credit Split. With Credit Split we will be able to allocate credit for Business Support, Designated Research Initiative Funds (DRIF), and Academic contributions.
Please work in conjunction with your MIPAR grant administrator to determine the academic credit for you and your CoIs. Your grant administrator will input the information you. If you have any questions, please contact your MIPAR grant administrator.

To introduce you to the Kuali credit split and help you with this transition, the Office of Sponsored Programs will be holding “Open Door Sessions” where you can drop in and meet with Rebecca O’Brien, the Grants and Contracts Manager from OSP. New NSF PAPPG 21-1 has been Issued

The new PAPPG will be effective for proposals submitted or due on or after October 4, 2021. Significant changes include:
- A new section covering requests for reasonable and accessibility accommodations regarding the proposal process or requests for accessibility accommodations to access NSF’s electronic systems, websites and other digital content;
-
A table entitled, NSF Pre-award and Post-award Disclosures Relating to the Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending Support. This table identifies where pre- and post-award current and pending support disclosure information must be provided. Proposers and awardees may begin using this table immediately;
- Increasing the page limit for the biographical sketch from two to three pages;
- Updates to the current and pending support section of NSF proposals to require that information on objectives and overlap with other projects is provided to help NSF and reviewers assess overlap/duplication;
- Adding planning proposals and Career-Life Balance supplemental funding requests as new proposal types;
- Updates to travel proposals will require that AORs certify that prior to the proposer’s participation in the meeting for which NSF travel support is being requested, the proposer will assure that the meeting organizer has a written policy or code-of-conduct addressing harassment.
You are encouraged to review the by-chapter summary of changes provided in the Introduction section of the PAPPG.
NSF plans to conduct a webinar covering these changes. Visit the NSF policy outreach website to sign up for notifications about this and other outreach events.
While this version of the PAPPG becomes effective on October 4, 2021, in the interim, the guidelines contained in the current PAPPG (NSF 20-1) continue to apply.

ORCID! The acronym ORCID stands for
Open
Researcher &
Contributor
IDentification
. ORCID is an international, non-profit organization -- sustained by fees from member organizations -- that provides digital identifiers (termed an ORCID ID) for researchers.
An ORCID ID will notably provide and account for a record of a researchers’ professional activities. ORCID IDs are free for individuals, and participating organizations (like UMBC) around the globe can collect and use the ORCID IDs of their affiliated researchers in research administration workflows. ORCID aims to increase and expand possible connections amongst a multitude of researchers, with the hope of developing and contributing--among other numerous merits and benefits-- to potentially greater interdisciplinary cooperation and collaboration in research.
ORCID will provide a unique and personally distinct digital identifier (and ORCID ID) that you own and control (you will keep this ID even if you opt to leave UMBC). You will then be able to connect that ID with your own professional information (i.e., publications, professional affiliations, past/current/pending grants, peer review, etc.). The ID can be used to share your information with other systems, which can be particularly useful when completing required administrative information on grant proposals for a variety of extramural sponsors.
ORCID at UMBC
In March 2021, UMBC became a member of ORCID! The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) highly encourages all Principal Investigators (PIs) and Research Administrators to learn about and actively engage in ORCID at UMBC as it should provide for a greater and more accurate reflection of a researcher’s career portfolio that can be actively utilized to complete mandatory grant proposal forms and documentation.
Having this essential information in one central location should alleviate some of the administrative burdens (and potential errors) in data collection for each proposal and report, thus increasing the efficiency and timeliness in submitting some of the information for proposal review and submission. Participation in ORCID by UMBC personnel will also help to develop and firmly expand research knowledge and outreach throughout the UMBC campus as well as fostering further relationships and connectivity throughout the University System of Maryland as well.

to assign credit to multiple persons and units for various categories including

Award) support.
The PI, CoI(s) and Chair(s) will need to work with the Kuali
proposal aggregator and each other to determine the split they feel is
appropriate and reasonable for everyone in every category.

Logics of Capital: Witchcraft, Slavery, and Waged Work

This Geography and Environmental Systems graduate-level seminar examines the spatial logics of racial capitalism to analyze processes that create and sustain hierarchies of difference along lines that include but are not limited to race, gender, and class. Throughout the course, we will explore these logics through topics such as racism, slavery, the sexual division of labor, patriarchy, witchcraft, unpaid work, the reproduction of labor power, labor deskilling, technology, waged work, and nature/society binaries. We will decenter the male proletariat in the historical development of capitalism to broaden the intersecting forms of accumulation by disposession with particular attention to the emergent and necessary spatial patterns of racial capitalism. Readings are selected to provide students with the tools to critically interrogate the political economy and to highlight the palimpsestic relationship between past and ongoing dispossessions and the relational nature of capitalism. We will look at multiple theoretical viewpoints of capitalism as well as specific forms of difference and the various strategies deployed to contest the logics of capitalism.
