Library Reopening News Library services, August 30 and beyond
The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is pleased to fully reopen to our campus and community users. Effective August 16 we reopened all seven floors of the building with no appointment required to use computers or study spaces. Per UMBC guidelines, masks are required at all times.

Beginning August 30, 2021 we will reopen for our fall semester hours:
  • Monday-Thursday:  9:00am to 8:00pm
  • Friday:  9:00am to 5:00pm
  • Saturday:  12:00pm to 5:00pm
  • Sunday:  12:00pm to 8:00pm
After the closing times posted above, UMBC users with valid, current ID may move to the Retriever Learning Center (RLC), which is open 24 hours. 
  
In addition to masks for user and staff safety, we have reduced capacity of some of our meeting and study rooms and event spaces, and removed some furniture to allow for safe social distancing. For everyone's safety, we encourage you to consume food and drink outside of the Library during this time. Appointments are still required to use the Special Collections Reading Room, and other service points may have reduced hours.

The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is pleased to announce that we will fully reopen to all UMBC and community users effective August 16, 2021. Between August 16 and 29, we will operate on our summer schedule:

Monday-Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Saturday Closed

Sunday 12:00pm to 5:00 pm

(Note:  We will be closed for our annual Staff Development Day on Tuesday, August 24.)

All seven floors of the Library will be open and appointments are not required. Card swipe will no longer be required to enter the library building. The Retriever Learning Center (RLC) will be open the same hours as the library. 24-hour study in the RLC will resume for the fall semester on August 30. Entrance to the RLC requires a valid UMBC ID card.

Per UMBC policy, all users and staff are required to wear a face covering over the nose and mouth while in the library building. We have removed furniture throughout the building and reduced capacity in our former group study spaces to encourage social distancing. Please help us maintain a safe space for all users and staff.

Contactless pickup of books, media, laptops, and audiovisual equipment will continue by appointment until August 29. Visit https://library.umbc.edu/curbside-pickup.php for more information. You may also browse the stacks for books, periodicals, or media items, but we encourage you to take advantage of our pickup and document delivery services.

Users are asked to consume all food and drink outside of the library during this time. Food services at Einstein’s Bagels are currently not available, and café tables and chairs have been removed from the Atrium.

The Academic Success Center (tutoring center) and Technology Service Center (Division of Information Technology help desk) are not returning to in-person services in the Library at this time. Announcements of their fall semester services and hours will be available soon.

Beginning July 6, the first two floors of the Library & Gallery will be open the following hours. Use will be primarily by appointment, with some walk-in services available.

        Mon-Thu        8am-8pm
        Fri                   8am-5pm
        Sun                 1pm-8pm

Building access will be limited to UMBC users with a valid ID, using the card swipe. Per campus requirements, all users and staff will be required to wear masks while in the building, unless in private offices.

Services and spaces available without an appointment:
  • Return books to the Atrium book drop or the Check Out desk
  • Return laptops or equipment to the Check Out desk
  • Use a 1st floor library printer
  • Use the 1st floor overhead scanner
  • Use the Retriever Learning Center (The RLC will be open the same hours as the building. RLC furniture has been removed and spaced.)
Services and spaces that require an appointment:
  • Use a socially distanced computer on the 1st or 2nd floor (some accessible stations are available)
  • Use a quiet study space on the 1st or 2nd floor with your own device
  • Use an individual bring-your-own-device study room on the 2nd floor
  • Use the Special Collections Reading Room
  • Use a microfilm reader/scanner on the 2nd floor
