The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is pleased to announce that we will fully reopen to all UMBC and community users effective August 16, 2021. Between August 16 and 29, we will operate on our summer schedule:
Monday-Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Saturday Closed
Sunday 12:00pm to 5:00 pm
(Note: We will be closed for our annual Staff Development Day on Tuesday, August 24.)
All seven floors of the Library will be open and appointments are not required. Card swipe will no longer be required to enter the library building. The Retriever Learning Center (RLC) will be open the same hours as the library. 24-hour study in the RLC will resume for the fall semester on August 30. Entrance to the RLC requires a valid UMBC ID card.
Per UMBC policy, all users and staff are required to wear a face covering over the nose and mouth while in the library building. We have removed furniture throughout the building and reduced capacity in our former group study spaces to encourage social distancing. Please help us maintain a safe space for all users and staff.
Contactless pickup of books, media, laptops, and audiovisual equipment will continue by appointment until August 29. Visit https://library.umbc.edu/curbside-pickup.php for more information. You may also browse the stacks for books, periodicals, or media items, but we encourage you to take advantage of our pickup and document delivery services.

Users are asked to consume all food and drink outside of the library during this time. Food services at Einstein’s Bagels are currently not available, and café tables and chairs have been removed from the Atrium.
The Academic Success Center (tutoring center) and Technology Service Center (Division of Information Technology help desk) are not returning to in-person services in the Library at this time. Announcements of their fall semester services and hours will be available soon.

The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery will provide virtual and contactless services for the Spring 2021 semester. The Library and Gallery building will remain closed to users to ensure the safety of our staff and community.
We will continue to offer the following services and resources for our users:
Virtual research appointments and “Ask a Librarian” chat service with our Subject Librarians and Archivists.
Virtual information literacy and library instruction sessions and research workshops. Please contact a Subject Librarian to discuss your instructional goals and options for how to reach them. Use the Instruction Request Form to schedule a session for your class, or request a Special Collections Instruction session.
A robust collection of electronic resources, including ebooks, databases, journals, research guides, and more, all available from your device. Get started with this guide.
Purchasing additional electronic books and streaming media. Contact your Subject Librarian or send a request directly to libraryacq@umbc.edu.
Providing electronic Course Reserves, with scans of book chapters, journal articles, and archival materials from UMBC Library collections. Visit this page for information on how to submit your requests via Blackboard.
Scanning of book chapters, journal articles, and archival materials from UMBC library collections, as well as purchasing individual journal articles, all for electronic delivery. Submit your request via Interlibrary Loan. Chapter and article delivery from partner libraries may vary as conditions change.
Contactless checkout and return of books and media, including physical library materials from UMBC and, to as great an extent as possible, from our library partners in the University of Maryland System. Learn more about how to place a request or view a map of book return bin locations on campus.

]]>Welcome to the all online environment! The Library has many ways to provide research assistance and other help during the emergency and there are some things you should know:
THE BAD NEWS
The library building is closed, no one allowed in or out, including the atrium and RLC. This means no books, reserves, media, laptops, or DML equipment is available for check-out, and USMAI borrowing and Interlibrary Loan are not operating.
THE GOOD NEWS

We request that you hold on to all Library materials for the time being. Fines and fees for currently checked-out material are suspended for the duration. Automatic messages may still go out, so if you are worried about an item being overdue, email the Circulation Department at circlib-group@umbc.edu.
Reference staff are available in chat from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Look for the “Ask a Librarian” box at the edges of the library homepage. Questions asked before or after chat hours will be answered by email.

The Internet Archive has also made available the National Emergency Library, "a collection of books that supports emergency remote teaching, research activities, independent scholarship, and intellectual stimulation while universities, schools, training centers, and libraries are closed."
Interlibrary Loan is operating at a reduced level, but may be able to provide article or chapter scans from our databases and e-journals, as well as from databases and e-journals from our resource sharing partners. Although we are not able to scan items from UMBC's print collections, we may be able to locate them for you online or from a vendor.
