Archives Gold #5: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th
A UMBC Yearbook from 1968
Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present UMBC's first yearbook, Skipjack, from 1968.

In 1967, a group of ten sophomores and freshmen came together to create the first UMBC yearbook, entitled
Skipjack. The students wanted to provide a unique outline to this first yearbook; instead of organizing it traditionally by events, organizations, and people, the yearbook staff decided to offer a chronological compilation of the beginning history of UMBC. Some of this history included early photos of UMBC under
construction, a dedication to UMBC's first chancellor
Albin O. Kuhn, photos from the
"Opening Day" of classes, the birth of
The Retriever newspaper, UMBC's first
student government,
Spring Week, and the
Retriever mascot. After its first publication,
Skipjack would only be published two more times, in 1969 and 1970. A few more yearbooks would be created throughout the years,
The Golden Retriever in the late 70s and mid 80s and
The Spotlight published 1988-1989, but the tradition of a yearbook would unfortunately never stick at UMBC.

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a photograph of Tom Berlin, the winner of the UMBC mascot contest, posing with new UMBC mascot the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. The UMBC News. In September of 1966, The UMBC News featured an article calling for a "Find Our Mascot" contest for the new UMBC university.
"'IT" comes... swiftly over hills and plains in a feverish attempt to reach UMBC on time... IT comes.. A nameless beast which will become the lovable pet of students for years to come..."
was written within The UMBC News (Volume 1, Number 1) to encourage all UMBC students to enter and offer their suggestions for the campus' mascot as well as the student newspaper. The administration ran these contests in the hopes of giving UMBC students the ability to participate in forming tradition at UMBC. Just a short month later, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, student Tom Berlin's suggestion, was chosen among the various entries to be the official UMBC mascot and the name of the school's newspaper. A much newer Homecoming tradition at UMBC is the annual Homecoming Bonfire on Erickson Field. First starting in 2005, the bonfire is an iconic tradition among the Homecoming festivities at UMBC. The idea for a bonfire came from First Year council member Thomas Locastro who gathered support for the event in October 2005. He had the honors of lighting the fire that year, as well as in 2006 and 2007. Since then, the annual bonfire lighting has taken place each year, except for two years when the event had to be canceled due to rain and bad weather. Activities at the bonfires over the years have included fireworks, movie showings, pancake eating contests, and free food.

Laptop Loans at AOK Library & Gallery
With support from the Department of Information Technology (DoIT), the AOK Library & Gallery has expanded its Equipment Loan Program to include laptops. Five MacBook Pros and five Dell Latitudes are available on a first-come-first-served basis at the Media Desk located on the second floor of the library.
The Equipment Loan Program, along with the Digital Media Lab, provides the UMBC community with access to audio/visual equipment suitable for a wide variety of video, audio, and graphic design projects. For more information regarding available equipment and loan policies, please visit:

Archives Gold #2: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th
A Pin from Homecoming 1976
Special Collections presents our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. Every Thursday we will present a new object from the University Archives - be it a photograph, pin, yearbook, playbill, etc.- leading up to the 50th Anniversary of UMBC's opening in September of next year. This week our object is a pin from UMBC's very first Homecoming in 1976.

In 1975, a group of UMBC students came together to form the first Homecoming Committee hoping to bring tradition and celebration to the UMBC campus. Their proposed motto "It Feels So Good" was chosen for the campus' first Homecoming in February of 1976 believing that it expressed "the feelings of alumni as they greet old friends" and "the wishes of the whole UMBC community to enjoy the pride and the sense of tradition that other schools possess" (1976 Homecoming Committee booklet). Students, faculty, staff, administrators, and UMBC alumni were invited to take part in the celebration with various activities and events, including a pep rally, a mixer featuring band "Climb-A-Donkey," and a homecoming basketball game against the Towson Tigers.

American Archives Month exhibit
October 1-30 in the Library Rotunda
This is the sixth year of celebrating American Archives Month at UMBC! This year we're looking deep into our institution’s shared history with the
physical space that we occupy today. On display in the Library Rotunda
are photographs, artifacts, and clippings from the Stabler family papers
(Collection 27),
which were donated by the descendants of Edmund Stabler, a long-serving
superintendent of the Baltimore Manual Labor School. An online exhibit
about the School will also be available this month. Both of the exhibits
were curated by recent UMBC graduate Nichole Zang, with assistance from
Special Collections graduate student assistant Tucker Foltz and
Archivist Lindsey Loeper. Nichole’s History M.A. thesis informed the work on display; a copy of her thesis, “Holy Temples to Dark Rooms:
The Origins of Baltimore’s Juvenile Reform Movement of the Nineteenth
Century,” is also available in Special Collections.
Members of Stabler family with dog and chickens, Stabler family
papers, Collection 27, Special Collections, University of Maryland,
Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD).
American Archives Month is a collaborative effort by professional
organizations and repositories around the nation to highlight the
importance of records of enduring value. Archivists are professionals
who assess, collect, organize, preserve, maintain control of, and
provide access to information that has lasting value, and they help
people find and understand the information they need in those records. -
