Archives Gold #9: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th

<Tagline>Report in 1970 UMBC Senate Minutes Regarding Free Hour</Tagline>

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a report included among minutes from a March 1970 UMBC Senate meeting pertaining to the creation of a Free Hour at UMBC.

Report within Meeting Minutes of UMBC Senate, 1970. University Senate Records, Folder 16: Minutes March 1970, University Archives, Coll052, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)

Free hour, the hour of time every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday without scheduled classes, first began on the UMBC campus in the 1970s. A group of UMBC students formed a Student Union, attempting to take more direct action (compared to other organizations like the SGA) in student affairs.

The Student Union had three initial requests of the UMBC Senate. One, to allow students, faculty, and staff to solicit donations from one another in any non-academic area and at any time. Two, for the student activities fee to be abolished (this was the most controversial of the requests) and three, for a free hour of no scheduled classes to be implemented on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Student opinion on free hour ran in both directions. Some appreciated a free period of time to have club meetings or to grab lunch, while others wanted the administration to schedule classes during the hour to allow for a more flexible academic schedule. Though free hour's questionable status would continue throughout the years, it's establishment (due to the efforts of the Student Union) continued on and is still in effect at UMBC to this day, the only University of Maryland System college to have such a thing.

Learn More:

-History of UMBC Research Guide

-University Archives Webpage

-In The Archives: Creating 'Free Hour' from UMBC Breaking Ground

-Article in The Retriever (Volume 4, Number 15) on the Creation of a Student Union at UMBC

-Article in The Retriever Weekly (Volume 18, Issue 9) About the Questionable Status of Free Hour (Page 3)

-Article in The Retriever (Volume 22, Number 20) About Administrators Contemplating Eliminating Free Hour

View All: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold

The rally was deemed a success, having brought in "one of the biggest crowds of any school-time event th[at] year" with over five hundred people gathered in the gym to participate (The Retriever, Volume 2, Number 12: page 4). The UMBC cheerleaders helped to lead the rally and boost the crowd's spirits by introducing the team and the Retriever mascot, then referred to as Sam. Hosting this pep rally was one of the university's early plans to foster a renewed sense of school spirit on campus as well as increase student support at the university's basketball games.

Learn More:

-History of UMBC Research Guide

-University Archives Webpage

-Article in The Retriever (Volume 2, Number 12) on the first Pep Rally

-Photograph in The Retriever (Volume 28, Number 13) of 1992 Pep Rally

-Photographs and Article in The Retriever Weekly (Volume 43, Issue 24) of 2009 Pep Rally

View All: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold

Six other UMBC plays have received recognition by the Kennedy Center in the course of the campus' existence, including Buried (2003), The Diary of a Scoundrel (1996), Spring's Awakening (1987), The Importance of Being Oscar (1986), and Play, Act Without Words II, Not I, Footfalls and Breath (1978). The very first production of UMBC's to receive national recognition was the Performing Arts Department's production of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in 1974. This was also the very first time a Maryland institution had been chosen to perform at the KCACTF.

Learn More:

-History of UMBC Research Guide

-University Archives Webpage
-Theatre Department Production Materials in UMBC's Digital Collections

-Article in The Retriever on Las Meninas

-Article in The Retriever on You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown

-UMBC Theatre Website

View All: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold

Archives Gold #5: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th

<Tagline>A UMBC Yearbook from 1968</Tagline>

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present UMBC's first yearbook, Skipjack, from 1968.

Skipjack, 1968. UPUB S2-001, University Archives, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)

In 1967, a group of ten sophomores and freshmen came together to create the first UMBC yearbook, entitled Skipjack. The students wanted to provide a unique outline to this first yearbook; instead of organizing it traditionally by events, organizations, and people, the yearbook staff decided to offer a chronological compilation of the beginning history of UMBC. Some of this history included early photos of UMBC under construction, a dedication to UMBC's first chancellor Albin O. Kuhn, photos from the "Opening Day" of classes, the birth of The Retriever newspaper, UMBC's first student government, Spring Week, and the Retriever mascot. After its first publication, Skipjack would only be published two more times, in 1969 and 1970. A few more yearbooks would be created throughout the years, The Golden Retriever in the late 70s and mid 80s and The Spotlight published 1988-1989, but the tradition of a yearbook would unfortunately never stick at UMBC.

Learn More:

-History of UMBC Research Guide

-University Archives Webpage

-Digital Collection of Skipjack Yearbooks

View All: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold
