Early issues of the magazine contained short poems and stories. However, a poem included and written by editor of Dialogue, Glenn Blanchard, in the second edition of the magazine stirred up controversy at UMBC. His poem alluded to racial tensions and used explicit language, upsetting many members of the UMBC community. Chancellor Albin O. Kuhn defended the journal and students' right to free speech, but after a controversy ensued once again (over the display of nude photographs within the Fall 1968 edition of Dialogue), the magazine fell apart and was ordered by Kuhn to officially stop its production.

Learn More:

-History of UMBC Research Guide

-University Archives Webpage

-Article in the UMBC Magazine on Dialogue's History

-Dialogue (Winter 1967) Which Contains Controversial "A Dance" Poem

-Dialogue (Fall 1968) Which Displays Controversial Nude Photographs

-Bartleby, the Literary Journal that Replaced Dialogue in 1972

View All: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold

Archives Gold #12: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th

<Tagline>Photographs of a 1969 Tug of War Contest over Library Lake</Tagline>

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present photographs from a Tug of War contest over Library Lake in 1969.

Skipjack, Volume 2, 1969. Kuhn Library has been a fixture at UMBC since its opening. In 1969, the junior class at UMBC organized a Tug of War contest to be held over the library pond, as can be seen in the photos above. This was the first "lake event" held at UMBC, and was met with overwhelming support. So much so, that just a few weeks later another lake event, a Raft Contest, would be organized. Students raced rafts and canoes across the pond as part of the activities of Spring Week. Photographs of this can be found in a link below.

Learn More:

-History of UMBC Research Guide

-University Archives Webpage

-Digital Link to Photographs of Tug of War Contest

-Article in The Retriever (Volume 3, Number 8) on Tug of War Contest over Library Lake

-Photographs of Raft Contest in Skipjack (1969)

View All: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold

Archives Gold #11: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th

<Tagline>An Issue of The Red Brick Newspaper</Tagline>

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present the third volume of UMBC's radical newspaper The Red Brick.

The Red Brick, Volume 1, Issue 3, May 1970. University Publications, University Archives, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)

The Red Brick was UMBC's short lived radical newspaper during the late 1960s and the early 1970s. The newspaper was student run and each edition contained various articles, poems, comics, and illustrations representative of the time. The second issue, for instance, mentioned the upcoming performance of Chicago Transit Authority (popularly known as Chicago) on October 19, 1969, as can be seen here.

The Red Brick was considered "radical" during its publication due to what the community described as "un-American and obscene writings." Many social organizations tried to protest the newspaper and stop its production but Chancellor Dr. Kuhn defended the students' rights to free speech. Despite his support, the publication eventually fell apart (after only three issues) due to continued controversy and financial mismanagement.

Learn More:

-History of UMBC Research Guide

-University Archives Webpage

-Digital Link to Red Brick Issue 1, 2, and 3

-More Information on UMBC's Red Brick Newspaper

View All: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a photograph from the WUMD radio station (currently known as WMBC) showing a man standing by radio equipment with a list of DJs on the poster behind him.

WUMD Radio Station Photograph, 1970s. UARC Photos-08-0816, University Archives, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)

UMBC's own student run freeform radio station first began broadcasting in 1972, under the name WUMD, working to provide UMBC students with the best programming in music, news, and sports. In 1998, the station went through a major transformation, renaming itself WMBC. This was partly due to the confusion of another college radio station already named WUMD (University of Michigan Dearborn) and partly in efforts to revamp the radio station with new talent, a new broadcasting antenna (for better reception), and a new name. WMBC continues to broadcast to UMBC students today, with live student DJs, musical programming, talk shows, sports broadcasts, and public service announcements.

Learn More:

-History of UMBC Research Guide

-University Archives Webpage

-Digital Link to WUMD Photograph

-Article in The Retriever Weekly (Volume 33, Number 8) on Switch from WUMD to WMBC Radio

-WMBC's Current Website

View All: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold
