This LearnLiberty debate presents arguments for and against more government assistance to help the poor in the United States. In this clip, Prof. Steven Horwitz and Prof. Jeffrey Reiman discuss how to help the children of the poor avoid suffering because of mistakes their parents made. Both agree that improving the quality of schools lies at the heart of the issue, but they differ in what they perceive as the role of government in improving school quality. Prof. Reiman throws in a twist at the end: If poor children should not suffer from their parents' mistakes, perhaps wealthy children should not gain from their parents' successes. What do you think? How can the U.S. education system be improved? What can be done to ensure that the children of the poor do not suffer from the mistakes their parents have made?
