Performance and Discussion: La bella en su jaula
A joint event between UMBC and Morgan State University

The Spanish programs at Morgan State University and the University of Maryland Baltimore County present:
La bella en su jaula/The Beauty in Her Cage, a play by Argentinian playwright Rubén Mosquera, based on the real story of Felicitas Guerrero, who is remembered as one of the first cases recognized as femicide in Argentina in 1872. The production touches on the role of women in a society ruled by patriarchal values.
- A free performance of the play will take place at the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center at Morgan State University on Wednesday, November 15 at 7pm. The entire production will be performed in Spanish with subtitles.
- On November 16, a dialogue with the playwright, Mosquera, and actresses, Zoe Bertona and Natalia Vacis, will take place on the UMBC campus at 5pm in Fine Arts Room 459.
By engaging in this dialogue, we hope to contribute to our collective understanding of gender-related issues, provoke meaningful discussions, and inspire action towards creating a safer and more equitable society.

Los Artes de Si: Quilombos, Palenques, Cumbes, and Marroons
Las Artes de si denotes cognitive procedures, differentiation, and spiritual cultivation by which Black people, in the context of the Americas, liberate themselves from the shackles of colonial categories through the extent of aesthetically communing with Black cultural manifestations and their epistemic and philosophical horizons. Through Las Artes de si, the production of aesthetic experiences, the Black communities of the Americas cultivated resistance, building shared territories, quilombos, cumbes, and palenques.
Speaker bio: Maya Quilolo (b. 1994) is a maroon artist and researcher. Winner at the Prince Claus Culture Responds to Climate Change Awards( 2023), her artistic practice addresses intersections between environmental justice, black corporality, visual art, anthropology, and indigenous heritage.

LHFA will be hosting with student organizations a Day of the Dead celebration / Meet and Greet. See more information below and please save the date. We are hoping a lof of faculty and students can get to know each other. there! Once we confirm all the details we will be sending a flyer so you can share it with your students and colleagues.

Julián Delgado Lopera, author
What if Spanglish were to be the default language of high literature? In this talk Julián Delgado Lopera examines oral traditions, spoken word, and language that’s fleeting and usually discarded as sites of ripe creativity and engines for the making of their novel, Fiebre Tropical.
Biography: Julián Delgado Lopera is the author of
The New York Times acclaimed novel
Fiebre Tropical (Feminist Press 2020), the Winner of the 2021 Ferro Grumley Award and a 2021 Lambda Literary award; a finalist of the 2020 Kirkus Prize in Fiction and the 2021 Aspen Literary Prize.Born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, Julián currently resides in San Francisco.

LHFA Present at 2023 Provost's Teaching & Learning Symposium
Several LHFA members presented and attended the 2023 Provost's Teaching and Learning Symposium at the Chesapeake Arena on April 21, 2023. After a wonderful presentation by the keynote speaker, Dr. Bryan Dewsbury, presenters answered questions from attendees about their research posters.
