This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name): PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers)

Location of the Organization (City, State): Baltimore, Maryland

Title of position: External Audit Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
As an External Audit Intern at PwC, I assist with audit procedures such as reviewing financial statements, testing account balances, and evaluating internal controls. I attend team meetings to discuss progress, collaborate with clients to gather information, and help prepare workpapers. This role provides hands-on experience in auditing, enhancing my technical skills and client interaction.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?:
I learned about the PwC External Audit Internship in summer 2024 when the application opened for the winter/spring 2026 session. I applied as soon as the application became available, submitting my resume and cover letter. After that, I waited for an interview to showcase my skills and interest in the position.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?:
PwC website

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?:
I’ve enjoyed most about my position as an audit intern at PwC is the opportunity to collaborate and communicate effectively with my team and clients. I’ve appreciated the supportive environment, where everyone is willing to help and guide me. Building connections with colleagues and learning from their experiences has been a valuable part of my internship.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?:
I believe I’ve made an impact through my work by contributing to the efficiency and accuracy of the audit process. By carefully assisting with audit procedures, reviewing financial statements, and collaborating with my team, I’ve helped ensure that clients receive thorough and reliable audit results. My attention to detail and proactive approach have allowed me to support the team effectively, allowing for smoother client interactions and timely project completion.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?:
My advice to student seeking an internship or similar experience is to focus on making connections rather than thinking you need to know everything. Attend career fairs, network on LinkedIn, and build relationships with professionals in your field. It’s not just about having the knowledge, but also about demonstrating your ability to connect, learn from others, and show your enthusiasm for the role. Building a network can open doors and provide opportunities that go beyond just your technical skills.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center:
The Career Center help me prepare for the application process, offering valuable resources, and providing the confidence to pursue this opportunity. Additionally, they supported me in adjusting to the challenge of balancing a full internship while taking six classes, helping me manage my time effectively and stay on track with both my academic and professional goals.

To better understand the genetic pressures wildfires cause toward lung cancer, we utilize a study of protein expressions in drosophila flies exposed to controlled smoke conditions. These controlled conditions in drosophila provide grounds for studying orthologous relationships caused by genetic pressures. Observing putative orthologs in drosophila in comparison with non-smoking lung cancer patients helps identify functional driver genes for lung cancer. Specifically, this comparative study analyzes functional genes at three stages: (1) Identifying orthologs of the mutated genes in the Drosophila flies within the Human genome, (2) comparing the mutation positions to determine if any mutational homologs are present, and (3) examining the conserved interactions in orthologs, called interologs, to determine if protein-protein interactions are conserved between the two species. Comprehension of how protein-protein interactions are altered from wildfire-induced mutations can aid in discovering therapeutic targets and establishing more robust lung cancer treatments. Additionally, this comparative model can be scaled to incorporate analysis of other model organisms and provide insights into different diseases.

The disorder is largely characterized by its negative symptoms—a profound and continuous deterioration of self and sanity. The personal accounts of those afflicted are usually disregarded because of this, leaving our awareness of the disorder to come primarily from the friends, family, and doctors surrounding the schizophrenic. And yet, it is a disorder which continuously fascinates to a great degree. Subsequently, schizophrenia research becomes an echo chamber which excludes those with actual firsthand experience of the disorder. As someone recently diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, this artist has attempted to illustrate the internal mystery of schizophrenia through her own experiences. These pieces, which were painted in varying stages of psychotic episodes, serve as perceptual depictions of a myriad of symptoms such as dissociation, paranoia, delusions, and hallucinations. So far, these paintings have been used to incite discussions between the afflicted and those surrounding them. Works such as “This is Your Brain on Depersonalization” and “Psychosis” help convey the internal struggle as seen by the schizophrenic—a self-portrait of the less visible manifestations—which we can then use to replace this fear of the unknown with understanding of the disorder.

This variation has a genetic basis but the genes involved are unknown. A recent genome-wide association study identified Rho1 as a candidate gene contributing to the variation of immune function with age. We investigated the role of Rho1 on bacterial clearance at young and old ages using Drosophila melanogaster. We used the GAL4-UAS system to knock down the expression of Rho1 in hemocytes of male and female flies and tested the effect of reduced expression on the ability of flies to clear bacterial infection at 1 and 5 weeks of age. Overall, older flies had reduced ability to clear infection compared with younger flies and males were significantly better at clearing infection than females. The effect of reduced expression of Rho1 on clearance ability depended on sex. Reduced Rho1 expression decreased the ability of males to clear infection but had no significant effect on clearance ability in females. Future work focused on understanding how Rho1 influences the innate immune response and why it has sex specific effects will provide new avenues for improving the immune function and the health span of the elderly.

This work was funded, in part, through an Undergraduate Research Award from the UMBC Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

Be like Mukta and Shivam: become a URA scholar today!

https://ur.umbc.edu/ura/

For Chinese American adolescents, this sinophobic fear could impact their stress in school. Previous research has found experiences of discrimination among Chinese American adolescents to be associated with negative academic outcomes (Benner & Kim, 2009). One factor that might moderate this link is the extent to which adolescents believe their schools practice cultural pluralism by making minority students more visible and celebrating cultural differences (Brand et al., 2003; Green et al., 1988). Promoting diversity and inclusivity may increase students’ sense of belonging in school, thus minimizing the stressful effects of messages of rejection about their racial/ethnic group (Schachner et al., 2016). Applying the School Ethnic Racial Socialization (ERS) Transmission model (Saleem & Byrd, 2021) to Asian American adolescents, this study will examine the potential moderating role of schools’ support for cultural pluralism (SSCP) in the relation between students’ perceived Sinophobia and school stress in the context of COVID-19. In addition, we will incorporate qualitative interview data to understand Asian American adolescents’ ideas surrounding how schools can create inclusive learning environments that address and/or prevent racial marginalization.

This work was funded, in part, through an Undergraduate Research Award from the UMBC Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

Be like Liz! The phonological development of the Philadelphia English dialect, particularly the unusual short-a split, serves as a compelling case study for examining these competing models. This quantitative study examines the phenomenon of “short-a tensing”. Analyzing the vowel formant frequencies in voice samples of older and younger Philadelphians can show variation within the speech community with respect to an ongoing phonological change. There are 20 participants in this study, in two different age groups: 18-40, and 41-62. All participants are native to the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Words with short-a were selected from Labov (1989) and Henderson (1996) as a sample of short-a words in specific phonetic environments. Recordings of participants’ voices are analyzed for the formant frequencies of the short-a vowel and compared between phonetic environments and age groups. Results demonstrate support for the lexical diffusion hypothesis, as the vowel varies consistently between different words, which is not expected if all sound change is regular, which the Neogrammarian hypothesis postulates. This research provides evidence for approaches to language that validate the natural variation that is observed between social groups.

Mark your calendar for URCAD 30: April 22, 2026!
