CyberPaws CTF: Week 2 (Spring 25)

<Tagline>A Little Hide & Seek</Tagline>

The first CyberPaws CTF challenge has been released! Please submit your flag to the "CyberPaws CTF Bot" on our Discord via DMs, using the `!submit` command! You have until our next meeting to submit. The flag will always be in the following format: Paws{ex4mpl3_fl4g}.

    Category: Steganography

Challenge Name: A Little Hide & Seek

Alright so you’ve got an image file that looks totally normal, at first glance, but we all know, in the world of CTFs, nothing is as it first seems. Your mission this week, should you choose to accept it, is to extract a hidden treasure (the flag for this challenge)! Easy enough, but you'll have to work a little bit for it.

I've done all I can to get us this far. I can give you a map to the treasure (.jpg) and a python script you can use to hunt it down (.py), but the only way to unlock that treasure is by solving a small puzzle. Take a look at the python script and see that it's all ready to go, but it’s missing a critical piece: the secret key!

Don't Panic! This is nothing more than a little hide & seek.

DM a board member for help if you get stuck.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1x0BswiJSxn93a-x3ciozSFK3vy-4iO8T?usp=sharing

6th International Country-to-Country Capture the Flag Competition

<Tagline>Students register by February 1, 2025</Tagline>

The International Cyber Security Center of Excellence and Northeastern University invite students to participate in the 6th International Country-to-Country (C2C) Capture the Flag (CTF) competition, C2C-CTF. This exciting competition allows students to work together as international teams to solve interesting CTF challenges while learning new skills, socializing, and promoting international collaboration and friendship.

C2C-CTF 2025 (https://www.c2c-ctf-2025.org/) is organized and hosted by Northeastern University and will take place in person on its campus in Boston, Massachusetts. The organizing committee invites students at all levels from universities in the UK, USA, Japan, Israel, EU, and Australia to apply to participate.

Students can register online and participate individually in an online qualifying event from February 7 to 9, 2025. Students who qualify for the final competition will be organized into teams of five members from different universities to encourage international academic collaboration. These teams will compete in person at the final event in Boston from July 7 to 9, 2025.

The organizers will hold webinars as part of the competition and educational process, during which students will learn about and discuss cybersecurity issues.

A goal is to create diverse teams for the competition by selecting competitors from a broad range of backgrounds, nationalities, languages, genders, experiences, and cybersecurity skills. We seek motivated and resourceful participants who enjoy a tough, intellectual challenge in a cooperative international context -- we are not merely looking for experts who have won other hacking competitions, although those students are also welcome and strongly encouraged to participate.

Interested students should apply here (https://www.c2c-ctf-2025.org/registration) by February 1, 2025.

Register by February 1, 2025

Qualifier event online: February 7-9, 2025

Final CTF competition: July 6-10, 2025

Send questions about C2C-CTF to c2cctf@northeastern.edu.

Reposted From: https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/cybersecurity/posts/146399

Mock Trial finishes Fall 2024 with undefeated record and numerous awards!

The final update of the Fall 2024 semester for UMBC Mock Trial reflects that both "stacked" teams - UMBC A and UMBC B - were in action this past weekend, and they both had outstanding finishes to wrap up one of the most successful fall semesters in program history.

UMBC A traveled to Columbia University for the Columbia University Big Apple Invitational Tournament (CUBAIT), widely recognized as one of the nation's elite invitational tournaments. Despite being shorthanded due to a few competitors who were ill, UMBC A rose to the challenge and went undefeated at CUBAIT, earning second place and not losing a single ballot! UMBC A only missed out on first place by a strength of schedule tiebreak, and swept teams from Fordham University, the University of Wisconsin, American University, and the University of Maryland. President Fadil Adeite was named an Outstanding Attorney on both sides of the case - his third consecutive tournament earning double-sided awards - and Treasurer Nathan Yates was named an Outstanding Witness on both sides of the case as well.

UMBC B was also on the road, as they traveled to Dickinson College for the Green Devil Napping Tie Scrimmage Tournament. While this scrimmage tournament did not have "places" because it was designed to give teams extra practice, UMBC B still had an outstanding weekend. They won three of their four trials, which would have easily meant placing at a normal tournament, and they also earned two individual awards! Team co-captain Gracin O'Connor was named an Outstanding Witness and Destiny Russell was named an Outstanding Attorney.

This weekend finishes a remarkable fall campaign for UMBC Mock Trial, including seven team awards:

Fifth Place, UMBC Charm City Classic Invitational

Third Place, William & Mary Colonial Classic Invitational

Fourth Place, William & Mary Colonial Classic Invitational

Sixth Place, Haverford Black Squirrel Invitational

Second Place, Columbia University Big Apple Invitational

Spirit of Charm City, UMBC Charm City Classic Invitational

Spirit of AMTA Award, William & Mary Colonial Classic Invitational

In addition to these team awards, UMBC competitors won fifteen individual awards over the fall semester, an average of over two per tournament.

UMBC Mock Trial couldn't wrap up the fall semester without shouting out Head Coach Thomas Azari '22, who has continued to coach and lead our program despite being a first-year law student at Maryland Carey Law. His support, along with that of Chichi Ukeje '23, Natalie Murray '22, and Faculty Advisor Ben Garmoe '13, has helped students and student leaders grow and succeed during this remarkable run of success.

UMBC Mock Trial now turns their focus to January invitationals and Regionals in February, where they begin their quest to return to the National Championship Tournament in April. UMBC Mock Trial has qualified for Nationals in six of the last eight seasons, and are confident that the spring will bring even more success. Thank you as always to all of you for your continued support!
