Panopto Version Update (6/27/24) Updates include accessibility improvements

On June 27th, Panopto is releasing an updated version (15.0).  No downtime is expected with this release. Updates include: 
  • Improved Folder Drop-down Menus and Actions: Highly used folder functions, such as Rename, Move, Share, and Delete, will be accessible in a new drop-down menu without having to open the folder’s settings. Please feel free to visit Panopto's ‘What’s New’ forum post for a full list of upcoming UI/UX changes.



  • Arabic language Support: Panopto has added language support for Arabic. As such, Automatic Speech Recognition, Optical Character Recognition, search, automatic captioning, and translations will support Arabic.
  • Accessibility Improvements: Keyboard accessibility has been improved for video and folder settings menus. ARIA labels have also been added to our embed code to ensure screen readers can announce video titles and descriptions.
  • Blackboard Relinking Services: LMS relinking services in Blackboard for users who need to update embedded video links or hyperlinks to Panopto links after migrating content from another VCMS platform.

Panopto has informed us that there is an upcoming mandatory upgrade for Panopto for Mac.

On July 20, 2023, Panopto will require Panopto for Mac clients to be upgraded to version 13.0.0. This upgrade will be applied on our Panopto site at 4:00 AM EDT.

Panopto for Mac version 13.0 will require at least macOS 11. Customers using macOS 10.15 or older will be required to upgrade to macOS 11 or newer. Please see this article to learn more about supported versions for Panopto for Mac.

Panopto will continue to support its Windows and Remote Recorder version 12.0 until July 2024.

Panopto for Windows and Remote Recorder version 13.0 is tentatively expected to release in Q4 of 2023.

There will be several platform enhancements, including additional  captioning options, content retention and archiving, new user roles, and faster video creation and publishing.

Internet Explorer 11 Retirement reminder
As a reminder, Panopto sunset  support for Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) on June 26, 2021. Usage of IE 11 will be blocked with the January release. Once this change is applied, users who attempt to access Panopto will be prompted to upgrade to a modern browser.

On Saturday, June 26, Panopto Cloud customers will be upgraded to the latest cloud release. The vendor anticipates up to 4 hours of downtime, with a target start time of 9:00 PM EDT. There will be numerous platform enhancements, including an improved sharing experience, designed to be more intuitive and to use a modernized look and feel.

End of IE Support
Also effective June 26th, Panopto will no longer support Internet Explorer 11 (IE11). This means the company will no longer fix any issues users experience while using Panopto on IE11.

Mandatory Client Upgrade
On Friday, July 16, we will require Panopto for Windows & Remote Recorders to be upgraded to version 9.0.2 or above and Panopto for Mac to version 10.1.0 or above. The upgrade will be applied to your Panopto site at 8:00 pm EDT/5:00 pm PDT.

Downtime

On Saturday, August 15, Panopto will be making a number of updates to their Cloud infrastructure to improve performance and scalability. These updates will require up to 3 hours of downtime, with a target start time of 9:00 PM EDT.


During the downtime, users will not be able to access videos on our Panopto site, and any attempts to upload from recording clients will result in a "Server unable to connect" message.


TLS 1.0/1.1 support end of life

TLS is the cryptographic protocol. Older versions of TLS, specifically 1.0 and 1.1 are no longer considered to be secure and Panopto will discontinue support of them on August 19th, 2020.

On Saturday, June 27, Panopto Cloud customers will be upgraded to the latest cloud release. This upgrade will require downtime. The vendor will announce the exact time and expected duration of the downtime on Friday, June 9th. Please see this cloud upgrade FAQ article for more information.

Mandatory Client Upgrades
On Friday, July 17, all Panopto for Windows, Panopto for Mac, and Remote Recorders users will need to upgraded to version 7.1 or above. The upgrade will be applied on our Panopto site at 8:00 PM EDT.

With this upgrade, MacOS version 10.12 will no longer be supported by Panopto for Mac.

Additionally, Panopto will also no longer support MacOS version 10.12 for viewers. Please see “Panopto Viewing Requirements” for more information.

Internet Explorer 11 - Maintenance Mode
On Saturday, June 27th, Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) support will be placed in maintenance mode, and therefore only critical issues affecting IE11 will be fixed. Newer features will no longer be tested on IE11, which implies they may not function properly. In certain cases, Panopto might need to block newer features if IE11 does not support the required capabilities.

Blackboard's navigation to courses will be upgraded on Friday, May 25, 2018 beginning at 3 PM EST as part of DoIT’s routine Blackboard maintenance. This upgrade will modernize the overall dashboard with the new Ultra Experience base navigation.

Important: Courses will NOT change in appearance or functionality.

No downtime is expected, but the login page located at blackboard.umbc.edu will be temporarily unavailable while it is also updated by DoIT. Faculty, staff, and students can still log into Blackboard by clicking on the Blackboard icon via myUMBC or going to my.umbc.edu/go/blackboard.

Once the Blackboard upgrade is complete, please clear your Internet browser cache and cookies before logging in using these step-by-step instructions. 

How does the Ultra Experience change Blackboard for faculty & students?


Redesigned Dashboard - Upon logging into Blackboard, faculty and students will notice a new look for Blackboard. Central site navigation for courses, organizations, tools, etc. is relocated to the left menu and there are no more tabs at the top. Your name, user profile, and personal settings will also appear in the left panel.

Activity Stream - The activity stream captures all the up-to-the-minute action in your courses. 

You will also see links for grades, calendar, messages, and global tools. Courses will open in a layer over the base navigation. Please see our FAQ collection and glossary about the Ultra Experience.

What is the timeline for the Ultra Experience at UMBC?

Faculty and students should expect no other changes to their courses at this time. However, the Ultra Experience is an innovative, learner-centric redesign of Blackboard and UMBC recognizes the change in course interface will take some time to get used to. Training and course redesign support will be available to faculty until the projected final rollover to Ultra in FA2019.
