Google Chrome Settings Impacting Blackboard Integrations
Update Your Browser Settings Today
Beginning in January 2024, Google will begin restricting all third-party cookies in Chrome by default. Technology tools used for instruction in Blackboard may use third-party cookies. If third-party cookies are restricted, the ability to access or view content could be impacted.
Examples of technologies that may require users to enable third-party cookies include the following:
- Blackboard
- CourseArc
- Panopto
- Poll Everywhere
- Publisher materials (ALEKS, Cengage, McGraw-Hill, Macmillan, zyBooks, etc)
- Qwickly Attendance
- VoiceThread
Take Action
Chrome users have several options to manage their Chrome settings to avoid losing access to instructional tools:
- Opt-Out:The first users who receive this new Tracking Protection feature can opt-out by clicking the settings (gear) icon in a notification.
- Manage Permissions: For users who don't opt-out, an eye icon will appear in the address bar when Chrome blocks an integrated tool because it uses a cookie. Click on the eye icon and select the option to permit cookies temporarily.
- Allow Cookies: Users can update their browser settings to allow third-party cookies in Chrome.

At approximately 3:42pm, DoIT staff became aware of a potential outage with third-party tools on our instance Blackboard Learn. System admins confirmed reports that an AWS outage in US-East is impacting Blackboard and many third-party tools in Blackboard including, but not limited to:
- Class Collaborate
- VoiceThread
- Cengage
- Pearson
- CourseArc
- WileyPLUS
The service disruption prevents users from authenticating into an application, whether through Blackboard or directly via the vendor's website. Active sessions may also be disrupted. Inline grading and viewing student submissions is also affected by this outage.
AWS is responding to the incident and will provide further updates to vendors about the service disruption. Instructional Technology staff opened a ticket with Blackboard support and continue to monitoring the outage.
This post will be updated with additional information as we receive it.
Update 5:15 PM - Many AWS cloud services have been restored. Amazon continues to work on the issue. Blackboard appears to be functioning normally, but Instructional Technology staff will continue to monitor server performance for the next 24 hours.

Publisher Integrations Updated in Blackboard for FA2019
Cengage & Wiley fully supported in Ultra courses
Several publisher integrations will be updated at the end of summer to leverage modern infrastructure functionality, which will change the way faculty access those tools.
Both Cengage Mindtap & Aplia as well as WileyPLUS will be available in Ultra courses for FA2019. McGraw-Hill Connect will be piloted in Ultra during the FA2019 semester in preparation for full deployment in SP2020. Pearson’s Revel will be supported in Ultra courses, but the Mastering and MyLab series is not yet available.
The updated integrations will allow faculty to deep link to publisher content and synchronize grades on an intermittent cycle. New FAQs will be available to guide faculty in using the integration of publisher content in both Original and Ultra courses.
Since the existing tools must be disabled so the upgraded versions can be activated, faculty should plan to review any student submissions in their publisher integrations and export grades by August 15.
