GO Chat Recap: Engaging New Students Online

<Tagline>Here's what you missed from our Go Online Chat!</Tagline>

For our February GO Chat, we reflected on the transition from face-to-face programs for UMBC first-year students to a new online delivery required by COVID-19. Summer and Winter Bridge Programs, first-year experience courses, and transfer courses all underwent major transitions to welcome the newest Retrievers in a virtual environment.

We started with a brief discussion about several recent articles from EDUCAUSE Review that caught our attention:

The Handoff: Transitioning from synchronous to asynchronous teaching tackled the topic of balancing live synchronous instruction with asynchronous delivery. The authors note it starts with faculty communicating to students their purpose for each and what is to be accomplished. Bottom line: know your students, know your technology because a variety of tools can support diverse learning styles.

Play in the time of COVID-19. Faculty are encouraged to challenge existing ideas about play that can dictate it is necessary to be serious all the time. Don’t forget the benefits of play in the learning environment! Your course design is one way to remove barriers to learning, create safety and community, and support motivation and student investment. A more “playful” course could include ice-breakers throughout the class or activities that engage learning in thematic ways.

Teacher, are you there? Being 'present' in online learning. In this COVID, remote learning time, building and maintaining learner engagement is deemed even more critical. The authors remind us of simple steps to connect and engage, encouraging faculty to show their authentic selves. This might be your home office settings, some drop-in visits from your pets, or festive background wallpaper. Remember that synchronous and asynchronous video captures body language, facial expressions, and emotion.

At UMBC, 2020 was a time of shifting on-campus programs and courses for new students to the virtual environment. Helping us understand what this meant for students, instructors, and staff was Dr. Laila Shishineh, Director of First-Year & Transfer Academic Programs in the Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA).

In this role, she oversees several campus initiatives: Academic Transition Courses (FYS, IHU, and TRS), Summer & Winter Bridge Programs, and the Living-Learning Communities. These two categories, courses and programs, support all new students with a strong academic core and engagement opportunities.

Academic transition courses and programs are not required, yet high numbers of new students who complete these experiences share feedback that indicates value in helping students understand the academic climate, connect with other new students, and have a successful first or second semester.

The new student population at UMBC is split almost evenly between transfer students and freshmen, which drives the need to deliver courses and programs that help all new students connect with resources and staff. “When this shift happened last spring, we started like so many on campus,”Laila said. “Our core focus was how do we continue to engage new students, create a sense of connection, and make it fun and interesting.”

In a typical year, more than 500 students will take a transition course, between 300 and 400 students will participate in a Living-Learning Community, and another 60-70 will complete the Summer Bridge program. However, in the remote setting that COVID-19 required, Summer Bridge was the first program that transitioned to fully online and the number of students in the virtual environment doubled.

“We assess our programs and courses a lot,” Laila said. “For Summer Bridge, students enjoyed the opportunity that might not have been available otherwise.” For the transition courses offered fully online in fall 2020, students felt connected to the instructor, other students, and resources, but also expressed a desire to do more on campus. “Students got what they wanted,” she said, “but they were also looking for a little more on campus and we were limited in what we could offer.”

Looking ahead, there are valuable lessons learned from offering an almost completely online semester. “The LLCs might be the one place where we can go back to what we were doing,” Laila said, “and that’s the nature of LLC. But for our transition courses and programs, this opens a huge door for us. When you think about scaling these to do more in person, that’s almost impossible with limited space, but if we take what we learned this year the opportunities for hybrid or fully virtual puts us ahead of the curve because we’re solving a problem.”

Check out the full GO Chat here for the complete interview.

Our next GO Chat takes place on Friday, March 26:Matching Technology to Pedagogy with Derek Bruff, director of the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching and a principal senior lecturer in the Vanderbilt Department of Mathematics, about research-based principles for matching technology to pedagogy.

We interviewed Derek following the March 9 book discussion of his 2019 book, Intentional Tech: Principles to Guide the Use of Educational Technology in College Teaching.

Arguing that teaching and learning goals should drive instructors’ technology use, not the other way around, Intentional Tech explores seven research-based principles for matching technology to pedagogy. We hope you will join us!

Don't miss a GO Chat!
GO Chat Recap: The Year of Open Ed - UMBC Alum Leads the Way

<Tagline>Here's what you missed from our Go Online Chat!</Tagline>

Last month, we kicked off our GO Chat series for 2021 with a dive into all-things-open, as in Open Educational Resources (OER), Open Pedagogy, and Open Science.

We started with a brief discussion about several recent articles that caught our attention:

Inside Higher Ed, Will College Be Free in 4 Years?, written through the lens of a 13-year-old middle schooler during the historic inauguration of President Biden, Vice President Harris, and FLOTUS Jill Biden. What might this mean for college affordability during the Biden administration? Despite the many political challenges, the authors deemed it a worthy aspirational goal for all institutions.

Faculty Focus, This Semester, Don't Forget Participation Feedback! This was a timely reminder about what can be a frustrating experience, a "participation" grade in an online class. Faculty can start by reviewing and refreshing their often-prescriptive language, modeling effective participation, using formative assessments, and preparing students to be effective participants in the classroom and work situations.

The Chronicle of Higher Education, Small Teaching Online column, 8 Strategies to Prevent Teacher Burnout. Author Flower Darby focused on flexibility and forgiveness as we approach the first year of pandemic teaching. She offered key takeaways for teachers: keep it simple, maintain balance, communicate strategically, and call timeout for yourself and your students.

Helping us understand this journey about all-things-open was UMBC alumni Dr. Karen Cangialosi, a Professor of Biology and Open Education Faculty Fellow at Keene State College (KSC) in Keene, New Hampshire.

Although she regularly incorporates open pedagogy in all her courses, Karen explains her journey started with an episode of the podcast, The Future Trends Forum by Bryan Alexander. During the episode featuring Gardner Cambell (2016), Karen recalled, "I'm a biology professor who used mostly traditional materials, but I did a complete 180 when it came to open education after listening to Gardner Campbell."

A proponent of Open Educational Resources (OER), Karen says OERs are an important gateway to open education in terms of people, practices, and content. Open pedagogy is about access, agency, and community. Karen describes a learning environment where her students can work with her to create content or learning outcomes, write an attendance policy, design self assessments, or determine how they will be graded.

While students can be unsure, or even resistant to this approach, Karen suggests that since most students will not know what this process can be about she still offers more traditional methods, content, or assessments. And what often ends up happening in those instances is that a few weeks after watching classmates create and share content, students will come to her and ask, "Can I change? I want to do what they're doing instead of this 25-page paper I said I'd write."

When it comes to students sharing content, Karen never requires them to create openly licensed work; however, she provides examples and opportunities that make it possible. For example, her BIO 318 students created a textbook -- A Student's Guide to Tropical Marine Biology that is utilized by other students across the open education community.

Karen acknowledges open education has been building slowly and she frequently guides colleagues to start with "your desire as a professor and what you want students to do and learn in your course." As higher education is changing dramatically now due to COVID-19, Karen sees faculty ideally positioned to shape those conversations and changes. Read more about Karen at her website: https://karencang.net/

Check out the full GO Chat here.

Our next GO Chat takes place on Friday, February 25: Engaging New Students Online, as we reflect on the transition from face-to-face programs and courses to an online format for first-year students.

We will be joined by Dr. Laila M.
GO Chat Recap: Super Size Courses

<Tagline>Here's what you missed from our Go Online Chat!</Tagline>

Last month, we reflected on the transition from face-to-face instruction to online instruction for one of UMBC's largest introductory courses CHEM 101, with its instructors Drs. Sarah Bass and Tara Carpenter.

We discussed some recent articles that have been on our mind:

The Washington Post, Cheating-detection companies made millions during the pandemic. Now students are fighting back. We understand that student privacy is incredibly important when using tools like Respondus Monitor, though we hope students and faculty consider the environment we all operate under with remote teaching and learning.

Inside Higher Ed, Dealing with student distraction. Students are always around distractions and instead we can shift the conversation to focus on engagement. Based on a recent PIVOT survey, UMBC students would agree that the need for breaks during extended synchronous sessions can help with their engagement.

The Guardian, Up to 50% of university students unhappy with online learning, (Australian) regulator finds. While some of the student concerns addressed in the article are not new, we talked about some of the universal challenges and how faculty and staff need to be flexible during uncertain times.

Drs. Sarah Bass and Tara Carpenter originally began their journey shifting their super-sized CHEM 101 course through the Alternative Delivery Program (ADP), originally intending their course to be delivered in a hybrid model. This modality would give them the flexibility to foster synchronous active learning, and asynchronous lecture and content delivery.

While rebuilding many components of the course, Sarah and Tara were deeply intentional about the costs associated with course materials. Recognizing that high costs presented challenges to access course materials, Sarah and Tara employed Open Educational Resources which substantially lowered the total cost of materials for their course.

Assessments play an integral role in this course. Before UMBC's physical campus closed due to COVID-19, CHEM 101 participated in a limited pilot using Akindi, a scantron alternative where instructors can use any standard printer to print bubble sheets and use any standard scanner to scan completed bubble sheets directly into Blackboard. Since then, Sarah and Tara have employed test pools, groups, and adaptive release in their Blackboard courses to promote academic integrity and to administer assessments without the need of a lockdown browser.

Check out the full GO Chat here.

Our next GO Chat takes place on Friday, January 22: 2021 The Year of Open Ed. We welcome UMBC alum Dr. Karen Cangialosi as our guest, a Professor of Biology and Open Education Faculty Fellow at Keene State College in Keene, New Hampshire. Karen facilitates an Open pedagogy faculty learning community, and she is co-leader of KSC Open, a Domain of One’s Own campus project.
GO Chat Recap: The Future of Online Learning at UMBC

Recognizing that the pandemic is not the only disruption that faculty and students encounter, everyone is looking for consistency and flexibility.

Inside Higher Ed, Moving into the Long Term. By the end of Spring 2021 most students will have spent an entire year learning online, and they continue to crave spaces to build relationships with each other and their instructors.

Inside Higher Ed, 4 Reasons Why Every Course Should Be Designed as an Online Course. While face-to-face teaching is likely to still be a part of the future, the principles of online course design can (and some say should) remain in place. The principles of course design that offer students resiliency and extensibility are true for all courses, regardless of modality.

UMBC's online presence has shifted greatly this year, as Beth started our conversation. Fifteen years ago, a partnership between the Division of Information Technology, the Faculty Development Center, and the Office of Summer, Winter, & Special Programs launched the Alternate Delivery Program (ADP). This program leverages the Quality Matters framework to support summer and winter session faculty who redesign face-to-face courses for online or hybrid delivery. While students are still interested in face-to-face courses, there has been a steady increase in online course offerings during Winter and Summer sessions, and a steady decrease in face-to-face course offerings during the same terms.

Reflecting on initiatives from this semester, Yvette offered exciting results from the newly established Finish Line program that encourages former UMBC students, who left prior to COVID, to return and complete their degree by re-enrolling in online courses. More than 120 students targeted for the campaign did just that in Fall 2020. Several Finish Line participants shared that online learning suited their own personal learning style or offered more flexibility in their schedules to take classes and get one step closer to completing a degree.

Check out the full GO Chat here.

Our next GO Chat takes place on Friday, December 4, and will be our final GO Chat for 2020!
