Blackboard Maintenance Scheduled Friday Jan 30, 12:01 AM-6AM Blackboard will be offline from 1AM - 5AM during this period
Blackboard engineers will perform infrastructure maintenance at the datacenter where we are hosted on Friday, January 30, 2015 from 12:01 AM - 6AM. 

Blackboard itself will also be offline from 1AM-5AM during this period for server maintenance. This is a change from the initial expectation for the maintenance window when Blackboard anticipated only email downtime. As previously mentioned, this update also involves the upgrading of the Managed Hosting email relay servers, previously described in this news article. Email sent by users through Blackboard between 12:01 AM and 6AM on January 30, 2015 will not be sent nor queued for later processing. Faculty and student users are advised to email directly through Gmail if communication during this maintenance window is essential. Email sent directly through Gmail is not affected by the Blackboard maintenance.

In preparation for this downtime:
  • Instructors: Please refrain from assigning any work that is due on Blackboard during this maintenance time. When the system is offline, students cannot submit their work.
  • Students: Please be sure to save or submit any work before this time. Any unsaved or unsubmitted work will immediately be lost when the system shuts down.

UPDATE: The Fall 2014 course site is back online after less than 2 hours of maintenance.

The legacy UMBC Blackboard site, which currently hosts Fall 2014 courses until they are migrated to our new Blackboard site, will be offline for emergency maintenance from 12-5 pm EST on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. Communities and organizations will also be unavailable during this downtime.

This maintenance period should allow faculty to export older courses from the UMBC Blackboard site without experiencing the known issue with invalid files and import the course content to the new Blackboard site for Spring 2015.

This downtime will not affect Winter 2015 courses as those are hosted on the new Blackboard site now. Faculty, staff & students may access Winter 2015 courses through one of these paths:

To UMBC Students, Faculty and Staff,

As the semester and year come to a close, we wanted to share highlights from the most recent DoIT News Update. First, as previously announced, UMBC Blackboard will now be hosted by Blackboard itself:

NOTE: This link will be active through 12/28/14. On 12/29, the myUMBC Bb icon/link and blackboard.umbc.edu will be used to access our new Blackboard system.

Second, Fall 2014 Bb courses will be migrated to our Bb managed hosted (MH) system after final grades are submitted on 1/5/15, the same day Winter 2015 courses begin. To access FA2014 Bb courses between 12/29/14 and 1/5/15, faculty can do so through my.umbc.edu/go/bbfall that will be prominently displayed in myUMBC. 

Finally, DoIT's Instructional Technology staff are offering several scheduled training sessions to help faculty prepare for Winter and Spring courses, and to learn about helpful resources in Blackboard such as the Grade Center. These sessions will be delivered simultaneously in person and virtually via Bb Collaborate.  Faculty may also want to check out the following:

Maintenance typically takes place from 10 PM Friday to 1 AM Saturday. DoIT staff will make every effort to keep to this three-hour window to ensure continuity of services; on a rare occasion, however, quality assurance checks may temporarily delay access. This schedule does not reflect any emergency maintenance that may be required, and DoIT will make every effort to keep the campus informed in a timely manner if such unanticipated downtime is required.
