Blackboard Instructor Mobile App Now Available

<Tagline>Connect with students on the go</Tagline>

A new Bb Instructor mobile app was released for iOS and Android devices last month, just before the annual Blackboard World conference.

Designed to simplify the teaching experience, the Bb Instructor mobile app is the first phase of several planned development for mobile support. Currently, the app allows faculty to:

Create, review, and post announcements

View, create, edit, and monitor discussion board threads and replies

Preview courses to make sure course materials are mobile-friendly

Connect with students using Bb Collaborate Ultra including real-time audio and video support, whiteboard and chat, and recording

Why are there two separate apps?

Blackboard developed two separate apps to support different roles. The student app focuses on content consumption, content creation (e.g., assignments) and updates via the activity stream while the instructor app will be about content creation, engagement, and assessment. If you are teaching a course or supporting a course as a TA or course builder, then Bb Instructor is the right app to use.

What happened to Bb Mobile Learn?

This app was discontinued by Blackboard earlier in 2017 as it would no longer function in the 64-bit environment of some mobile operating systems.

Why don't I see my exact course layout?

The mobile app is not designed to mimic your exact course. Rather, the focus is on specific and essential items such as due dates, announcements, course content, and discussions. There is no control panel or course menu. If you require access to the desktop version of your course, please use a browser.

Why does my content look strange in the mobile app?

It's possible your content is not mobile-friendly.
FA17 Courses Created in Blackboard on 07/18/2017

<Tagline>Blackboard cloud migration completed on 07/07/2017</Tagline>

Blackboard course shells for FA2017 were created on July 18, 2017 after the completion of the cloud migration.

Summer 2017 courses will be archived from the separate cloud environment and migrated to the primary Blackboard site in mid-FA2017. Faculty will not need to export their summer content unless they require it for immediate use.

Returning faculty who have not used Blackboard since spring should consider the following before logging into the new cloud environment:

Clear your Internet browser cache and cookies using these step-by-step instructions.

Report any technical issues via RT ticket. If possible, please include screen captures or error messages.

Familiarize yourself with Blackboard’s new features & updates

Review the original Bb migration FAQ

About Course Creation

Bb shells for FA2017 are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. As new course sections and/or instructors are added to the SOC by Department Scheduling Coordinators, corresponding Bb shells are automatically generated overnight.

If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your Departmental Scheduling Coordinator to resolve the issue. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.

If you and your Department Scheduling Coordinator believe you are correctly assigned as the instructor of record in the SOC and you do not see your course shell in Blackboard, please submit a Request Tracker (RT) ticket via my.umbc.edu/help.

If you need a Bb shell for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request.

Instructors who teach multiple sections of the same course will find those enrollments merged into one Bb course shell. These sections may be split upon request by an RT ticket, which we recommend submitting at least one week before the semester starts, if not as soon as courses are created in Blackboard.

Student enrollment in Bb mirrors the official registration in SA and updates hourly. However, courses are not accessible to students by default until the instructor of record makes them available.

As always, if you have any questions, please consider the following options:

Check our extensive FAQ collection

Open a ticket via RT

Follow the Instructional Technology & DoIT myUMBC groups

7 Things to Remember During the Bb Cloud Migration

<Tagline>Essential tips for summer faculty</Tagline>

This summer, UMBC takes Blackboard to the cloud. Summer courses will be hosted in a separate environment while we prepare for the migration of our main site. Here are seven important things to remember during the migration.

(1) Export & Import Content

Since summer courses are on a separate site, you will need to export your content from our main Blackboard site and import to your summer course shell in the cloud. Please review the FAQs for more information or open an RT ticket for support.

(2) Third Party Integrations

The summer environment supports all current integrations with some differences because it is separate from our main site.

Clicker students will need to synchronize their devices and Turning Technologies accounts through the summer Blackboard site. Since the summer Blackboard site is separate from our primary Bb site, summer courses will not experience any disruption.
