About Course Creation

Bb shells for SU2021 are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. As new course sections and/or instructors are added to the SOC by Department Scheduling Coordinators, corresponding Bb shells are automatically generated overnight.

If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your Departmental Scheduling Coordinator to resolve the issue. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.

If you and your Department Scheduling Coordinator believe you are correctly assigned as the instructor of record in the SOC and you do not see your course shell in Blackboard, please submit a Request Tracker (RT) ticket via my.umbc.edu/help.

If you need a Bb shell for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request.

Instructors who teach multiple sections of the same course will find those enrollments merged into one Bb course shell. These sections may be split upon request by an RT ticket, which we recommend submitting at least one week before the semester starts, if not as soon as courses are created in Blackboard.

12 Effective Practices for Delivering Blackboard Tests

<Tagline>Get ready for final exams with these test prep tips</Tagline>

Online tests and assignments are an effective and convenient way to assess students in the virtual environment. Throughout the semester, faculty can leverage many different options and settings for digital assessments. Here are a dozen tips to improve your test administration and assignment collection as the semester reaches its conclusion.

1. Avoid Force Complete on Original Tests

This legacy setting on Original tests prevents students from accessing the test environment if they prematurely leave. Unfortunately, if students lose internet access, have technical difficulties, double-click a link, they can be kicked out of the exam, requiring that you add a new attempt or reset the attempt altogether. Instead of using force complete, set your exam to Auto Submit, which will allow students back into the test and collect the student’s submission at the end of the allotted time whether or not the student is finished.

2. Practice Before Proctoring

Before you use Respondus Lockdown Browser (alone or with live proctoring or with Monitor enabled), create a no-points practice quiz with unlimited attempts so students can experience the testing environment and configure their computers before they take an exam. If you do not have a practice quiz, be sure to allow plenty of extra time for students to set up. This is especially important if students need to update their lockdown browser.

3. Describe Test Expectations

Let students know how many questions and what kind of questions they will have on the test. Post the test limit, whether the test will auto-submit when time is up, and if there is more than one attempt. Include start and end times. Link to relevant FAQs on test taking tips or using Respondus Lockdown Browser, if enabled.

4. Communicate Your Handling of Technical Difficulties

Tell students how you will address any potential technical issues during a test. Be fair and swift, especially if your test timer is limited. Consider whether you will respond to individual emails or post an announcement. Some technical issues may be deferred until business hours the next day so please consider how you will handle these types of questions. Know which vendors offer 24/7 support (e.g., Respondus) so you can refer students to those resources.

5. Stagger Access to the Test

Avoid having too many students access your test at the same time. You can set a wide window when students can start the test, but create a timer so once the test starts, students only have a fixed amount of time to complete it. You can also apply Adaptive Release (Original) or Conditional Release (Ultra) rules to restrict access to specific groups of students.

6. Set Question Display for the Right Situation

Showing all questions on one page can be great for short tests during a short amount of time. However, for longer tests (25+ questions or taking more than 1 hour), consider that students may benefit from displaying one question at a time. Additionally, Blackboard can time out if the test is too long: See #7 next on our list!

7. Break Up Large Tests

Blackboard will time out after three hours of general inactivity. Instead of delivering one long 2-hour test, provide four 30-minute tests. Chunking the test eases impact on Blackboard and student network connections while also providing opportunities for those screen and stretching breaks. Adaptive Release (Original) or Conditional Release (Ultra) rules can also be leveraged to open the next part of an assessment based on specific criteria such as a minimum grade or date/time.

8. Allow Backtracking on Original Tests

Students like to check their answers or skip questions if they are uncertain about an answer. If you don’t allow students to backtrack, they will attempt to use the back arrow on the browser and inadvertently cause an issue with the test or lock themselves out.

9. Dip Into the Pool

Leverage question pools to generate randomized and unique tests for students. Random blocks (Original) and Question pools (Ultra) allow you to choose a defined number of questions (5) out of a larger collection of questions (50) and randomly distribute those questions to students so each one sees a different set. Learn how CHEM 101 and CHEM 102 used nearly 1500 questions to create a robust assessment series.

10. Set Access Codes on Ultra Tests to Prevent Late Submissions

Instead of hiding an Ultra test with a date restriction, use an access code after the test period ends. This allows students to see their grades and feedback and prevents any late submissions.

11. Remind Students to Check Technology

Students should use the latest version of Chrome or Firefox when taking a Blackboard test, and they should check for browser updates regularly. To optimize performance, all other applications should be closed unless you allow access during the test. Students should verify that cookies are enabled for Blackboard, Collaborate, and related third-party tools.
Using WebEx for Live Instruction and Collaborative Learning

<Tagline>One Instructor’s Use Case and Lessons Learned</Tagline>

It’s a cliche at this point for one to state that this past year has presented many complexities for all of us to adapt to. Not the least daunting of these adversities has been connecting meaningfully with peers and colleagues over web-conferencing platforms. This difficulty has spurred a myriad of responses and tool adoptions, particularly within a domain with which we are all now intimately familiar – online learning. Of notable concern for faculty and students throughout this period of uncertainty and innovation has been the need to connect and interact synchronously. What are the best tools and practices to facilitate learning?

UMBC has been particularly well positioned throughout this time, supporting both Blackboard Collaborate Ultra and WebEx as synchronous platforms. But with this wealth of opportunity, one is at times left wondering what platform to adopt and for what use cases. The response to these concerns require some nuance: It depends on what one is attempting to undertake and how much time one is willing to spend preparing their learning spaces to promote learner interactions.

Professor Jamie Gurganus, the undergraduate program coordinator and a faculty member in the UMBC’s Mechanical Engineering Department, Director for the Center for Integrated Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL), as well as Associate Director of Engineering Education Initiatives at COEIT, has been using WebEx as her platform of choice for teaching her mechanical engineering students, or “Mechies.” She’s developed an exceptionally well thought out approach to incorporate live instruction, lab participation, and peer-to-peer group learning.

For Professor Gurganus, a primary concern has been in facilitating the same types of design and collaborative learning experiences she’s been able to provide through face-to-face instruction, particularly for supporting group work. How can one best scaffold undergraduate students in large classroom settings to engage in discussions with their peers and coordinate on long term design projects? She has found using the WebEx spaces, although time consuming to configure, conducive to facilitating the kinds of interactions students need to be successful in the courses she teaches, from brainstorming and critical problem solving, to developing product prototypes for customers with special needs.

Her adaptation and model of WebEx for lecturing and collaborative learning appears both thoughtfully designed to be comfortable and inviting while simultaneously strikingly commonsensical. Students enter her sessions to the sound of music and respond to icebreaker questions such as “Would you rather fight with Marvel or DC heroes and why?” Her lectures, with both her forward facing camera and slidedeck presented, are recorded. Attendance is taken by Teaching Fellows (Undergraduate Teaching Assistant) based on breakout group participation or by using Qwickly Attendance. There’s an ongoing, searchable record of all communications and documents shared, and perhaps best of all, the breakout rooms are always available for students, during or between classes, and for instructor drop-in.

Professor Gurganus has some really great ideas about how to use WebEx to support students’ needs, and will be sharing this story, along with tips, tricks, and thoughts for faculty considering adopting this platform for their own instruction moving forward. Please register and join us Tuesday, June 8th, at 12:00 PM to learn more.

~ By Tom Penniston

Group content release, peer assessment coming to Ultra

<Tagline>Frequently requested features available in April</Tagline>

In early April, a frequently requested feature finally comes to Ultra courses. Conditional release of content to groups or individual students allows faculty to create remedial paths to certain students, give different content to undergraduate and postgraduate students in a course, among other use cases.

Conditional release of content is currently available based on date or grade. With the April update, instructors will be able to grant access to content based on group membership or individual user. These rules can be combined with date/time as well as performance (grades), matching near feature parity with adaptive release criteria in Original Blackboard courses.

Peer assessment is a practice becoming more common because it encourages development of students’ critical thinking abilities, gives them practice in critique of others in a professional manner, and allows for measurement of students’ analysis and communication skills. With the April release, qualitative peer review can be enabled for an Ultra assignment. Peer assessment features:

Set different due dates for the initial assignment submission and the completion of peer review: Instructors can set how many reviews are expected from each student. Peers are assigned randomly and automatically.

Late submitters and reviewers remain part of the task and can continue to participate: Instructors can clearly see who was late. This is a huge improvement over the implementation in Original Course View and superior to implementations found it other learning management systems where students who are late on anything can no longer participate.

Tracking: Instructors can track students’ progress toward completion.

Rubrics: Students can see the rubric that will optionally be used for the grade. Instructors can grade using a rubric.

Complete, single view: When grading, the instructor can see all this information in a single view: the student’s submission, feedback provided by the students’ peers, and the feedback the current student gave to their peers.

Anonymous mode for students: The identities of peers are hidden from students but viewable by instructors.

Censoring: Instructors can hide reviews deemed inappropriate or harmful.

As this is a first release of the Peer Review option for Assignments, there are some relevant use cases that aren’t part of this development, but are planned as future improvements. Updates include quantitative reviews with rubrics, non-anonymous mode, group support, multiple-prompts with essay questions, and separate grades for submissions and reviews. Please watch the FAQs and myUMBC for additional information.

April also brings improvements to the Ultra course text editor for paragraph formatting, allowing the creation of more rich and customizable pages. These include: Clear formatting, text alignment, line height, and undo. Text alignment includes right to left, which will support several language courses.

Finally, with this update, Blackboard improved the timeliness and performance of notifications for all users by no longer generating notifications for users with more than 500 enrollments.
