Dear members of the campus community,
It is with tremendous sadness that we share with the campus community the passing of UMBC alumna and former assistant director in the Office for Academic and Pre-professional Advising Paula Ashby ‘76, psychology, an exceptional friend, family member, and colleague who dedicated her life to academic advising and student success.
Ms. Ashby began her journey in academic advising as a student assistant in the Learning Resources Center during her junior year at UMBC in 1974. After completing her undergraduate degree, she returned to UMBC several years later as a professional academic advisor in the former Allied Health Advisement Center. Ms. Ashby’s gift for advising enabled her to serve in an exemplary fashion as Graduate and Professional School Coordinator, where she supported the Meyerhoff Scholarship Program for nearly a decade, from its inception in 1989 until 1997. One year later she assumed the role of assistant director in the Office for Academic and Pre-professional Advising, where she remained until her retirement in 2016.
Over her 36-year career, Ms. Ashby has counseled and mentored thousands of students across UMBC's undergraduate advising system, and her impact on the foundation of professional academic advising at the university is significant and laudable. She steadfastly and nobly served as an academic advisor, student advocate, heath professions expert, and new student orientation guru. She will be remembered as an academic advising pioneer who has made enormous contributions to launching and fostering the careers of countless health care professionals throughout the region, state, country, and beyond.
Viewing services for Ms. Ashby will take place on Friday, February 17, 2017, 5-8 p.m. at Wylie Funeral Home, 9200 Liberty Road, Randallstown, MD, 21133. A wake will be held on Saturday, February 18, 10:30 a.m., at Epworth United Methodist Church, 3317 Saint Lukes Lane, Baltimore, MD, 21207. Members of the campus community are invited to join family and friends for a Celebration of Life Service at the Epworth United Methodist Church immediately following the wake.
