Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building Construction

<Tagline>ILSB construction project begins May 1</Tagline>

This spring marks the beginning of the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building (ILSB) construction project, an important facility that will greatly expand the university's life sciences programs and teaching facilities. The project also provides an opportunity to update the areas surrounding the new building.

The ILSB will replace the existing Academic Services Building, adjacent to the Commons. The new, four-story facility will provide high-technology classrooms, seminar rooms, and flexible and adaptable research labs for undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students. The surrounding areas to be updated include a new plaza with improved walkways and plantings, as well as renovations to the Quad, which will see added pathways and improved landscaping. The project is slated for completion by the summer of 2019.

We understand that construction projects of this magnitude impact the campus in many ways, including pedestrian pathways, vehicular routes, and parking, and we appreciate your patience and flexibility. As part of the planning process for the project, we have addressed accessible routes and features that may be affected by the construction. If people with disabilities experience any unforeseen accessibility-related complications as a result of this construction we ask that they contact the university's ADA Coordinator so that accessibility concerns can be addressed in a timely manner.

As project construction begins in early May 2017, several areas across campus will be directly impacted over the course of the summer. Specifically, those areas are:

The Quad

On May 1, we will be closing access to the Quad. Preparation for the foundation of the new building requires utility work, which will extend from the construction site to academic row. Fencing will be erected with signage directing pedestrian traffic around the construction area. Access to buildings in the area will remain open, however we recommend using alternate pathways outside of the Quad during the construction period. The Quad will remain closed for the first year of the project.

Commons Circle and Gated Lot 2 Parking

As part of the first phase of construction, crews will be developing a new drop-off circle adjacent to the Physics Building which will replace Commons Circle. This work will require closing a small section of Gated Lot 2. Upon completion of the new circle, scheduled for the end of the summer, it is estimated that 20 spaces will be displaced.

Access to Commons Circle will be restricted to deliveries and service vehicles only. In the interim, please consider using other drop-off locations on campus, such as the main campus entrance, the library, and Poplar Ave.

Commons Drive and Garage

Commons Drive and Garage will remain open throughout the entirety of the project with only minimal interruption. However, due to safety concerns and width limitations of the road, curbside parking on the north side of Commons Drive will be removed to allow for safe travel of construction equipment to the site. Approximately 20 parking spaces will be inaccessible for the duration of the project.

As we move forward with this important project, we encourage you to visit the ILSB project website and join our myUMBC group to receive news and updates and stay apprised of how construction on this project may impact you.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

Lenn Caron, Assistant Vice President, Facilities Management

Update regarding new travel ban executive order

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

Following yesterday’s announcement of a new executive order imposing a 90-day ban on citizens of six countries entering the U.S., we want to provide a brief overview of the details of the new order and the university’s response.

The new executive order, set to take effect on March 16, 2017, suspends the issuance of new visas for citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen for 90 days. Individuals from those six countries who are outside the United States as of March 16, and do not already hold a valid visa, will likely be affected. The new order specifically exempts U.S. legal permanent residents and many dual citizens. For further detailed information on the new executive order and how it may impact you, please see the International Education Services (IES) website.

While the new executive order is more limited in scope than the first travel ban issued in late January 2017, we are still deeply troubled by the significant impact it will have on higher education. As we have said before, one of American higher education’s great strengths is its ability to bring together the best minds from around the world to create scholarly communities that benefit from diversity of experience, background, and thought. UMBC is home to students, faculty, and staff from more than 100 countries, and we understand the educational, societal, and economic benefits of bringing together people from across the globe to solve our most pressing challenges.

The previous executive order faced legal challenges, and this remains a highly fluid situation. Those who are citizens of the six countries affected by the new executive order should seek legal advice before making a decision about traveling outside the United States. IES will continue to post updated information regarding implementation of the executive order on its website and keep members of the campus community apprised of the situation as it evolves.

We also will continue to keep the campus updated about our work to advance UMBC’s culture of inclusive excellence on the UMBC Diversity and Inclusion website.

President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

I am writing to announce the search for UMBC’s new Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology to replace Dean Julia Ross who will have served, with distinction, in that position for the past three years. This national search will begin immediately and continue through the current semester with the intent of appointing the new Dean prior to the beginning of the Fall 2017 semester.

Dr. Mark Marten, Professor and Interim Chair of the department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering, has kindly agreed to chair the search committee. Under the leadership of Dr. Marten, I have appointed a search committee to assist the University in identifying our new Dean and we have engaged the services of an executive search firm, Storbeck/Pimentel, to assist the committee in its work. The names of the members of the committee are listed below, each of whom has my sincere gratitude for agreeing to take on this critical institutional responsibility and their service and commitment to the future of the College and UMBC.

The committee will reach out to the University to receive input on the desired personal and professional characteristics of our new Dean in order to develop the criteria that will guide the search and the selection process. The committee will also share with the UMBC community the progress of the search over the coming weeks.
