Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Mavis Sanders, Professor of Education, as the inaugural director of the Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities.

This new multidisciplinary center has been established with a generous gift from George and Betsy Sherman Family Foundation. The Sherman’s have been extraordinarily generous having launched the Sherman STEM Teacher Scholars Program and supporting UMBC’s partnership efforts with Lakeland Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore City. The new Sherman Center will expand UMBC’s efforts to build a strong foundation for learning among young children in Baltimore City and develop best early education practices for urban schools through applied research, teacher professional development, and partnerships with schools, families, and communities. Under the direction of Dr. Sanders, the center will also support the university’s established and new school partnerships by identifying and working with academic leaders in Baltimore City.

Dr. Sanders joined the UMBC community in 2011, after serving as Professor of Education and Research Scientist at Johns Hopkins University for 16 years. She brings a wealth of research expertise and partnership experience to this important position. Dr. Sanders’ research focuses on the processes and outcomes of school, family, and community collaboration, including how schools and districts develop and scale up their partnership programs. Her work also aims to understand the effects of home, school, and community collaboration on African-American adolescents’ school success, and how community engagement can improve educational experiences and outcomes for low-income and culturally diverse students in U.S. public schools.

Dr. Sanders has an extensive record of publication including four authored/edited books, most recently the 4th edition of School, family, and community partnerships: Your handbook for action (with Joyce Epstein and colleagues) now in press with Corwin Press. Her current research on full-service community schools has been funded by two grants from the Spencer Foundation. Dr. Sanders also has a record of exceptional leadership in service to the UMBC community, including service as co-chair of the Community and Extended Connection Strategic Planning Group and her current service as co-chair of UMBC’s PreK-14 School, Family, and Community Connections Workgroup.

In the coming weeks, Dr. Sanders will be convening an advisory board of cross-campus and multidisciplinary partners that will help shape the vision and early work of the Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities. Under her leadership, the center will work in close collaboration with the Provost’s Office and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences to identify and support new initiatives and promising faculty-led research projects. The center will also work with campus partners that currently support K-12 school partnerships.

Please join me in congratulating and supporting Dr. Sanders as she takes on this new leadership role.

Provost Philip Rous

We take enormous pride in all that UMBC has accomplished since its founding in 1966. The campus continues to build traditions that celebrate our achievements, from singing the Alma Mater at Convocation and placing a mortarboard on the head of True Grit on graduation day, to recognizing the accomplishments of faculty and staff at our annual awards ceremony.

Homecoming is a special opportunity for the entire UMBC community—faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and friends—to come together. Over the course of our 50th anniversary celebration, we engaged thousands of people from across the campus community. We need your help to extend the energy of the 50th into continued engagement that will help the campus achieve its goals now and into the future.

Many events are scheduled for this year's Homecoming celebration, and we encourage you to attend and extend a personal invitation to those in your UMBC networks to participate.
Judah Ronch to Step Down as Dean of the Erickson School

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

Dr. Judah Ronch has shared with me his intention to step down as Dean of the Erickson School at the end of the Spring 2018 semester to return to teaching and scholarly work.

Dr. Ronch joined the Erickson School as Professor of the Practice in early 2007 after an almost 40-year distinguished career in academia, clinical practice and research. Dr. Ronch has consulted for aging services organization and state and Federal governments, served in executive roles with aging services providers, and published numerous publications that pioneered culture change and strengths-based approaches in aging services. He was instrumental in the development of UMBC’s M.A. degree in management of aging services and in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses. Dr. Ronch was appointed Interim Dean in 2009 and was named Dean in 2010. Under his leadership, the Erickson School became recognized as the leading school of its kind in the U.S., with a faculty acknowledged for its excellence in both the academic and practical aspects of management of aging services at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional education levels. During his tenure as Dean, Dr. Ronch maintained an extensive record of scholarship resulting in the publication of two edited books and numerous articles and textbook chapters on aging issues, culture change in aging services, innovations in pedagogy, and the convergence of technology and aging.

The Erickson School has become a national model for promoting developmental, strength-based models of service and care for elders through its integrative curricula, research collaborations, thought leadership, and community engagement. The School’s nearly 300 alumni and partners have been instrumental in identifying new opportunities for people to age better by leading change in numerous aging service organizations and developing innovative policy initiatives at the local, state, and federal levels. The Erickson School has convened numerous conferences, including the Memory Care Summit, an annual national meeting on dementias.

The Erickson School developed and implemented an innovative and interdisciplinary project which brought together students and faculty from across the disciplines to demonstrate what aging care would look like 50 years into the future. This institutional collaboration culminated in the launch of a long-term interdisciplinary approach focused on practical aging issues that include undergraduate research, interdisciplinary courses, and scholarship and community engagement. Among other accomplishments, this integrative approach led to the creation of the first specialized geriatric emergency department in the U.S. at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring and, more recently, at St. Agnes Hospital. The Erickson School has also been offering instruction to UMBC employees through its information sessions offered as part of the Wellness in the Workplace series.

We would like to thank Dean Ronch for his steady leadership in advancing the mission of the Erickson School, and we look forward to his continued involvement in the UMBC community. We must now turn to the difficult task of recruiting a new Dean to build upon Dr. Ronch's legacy and that of all the faculty, staff and students who have worked so hard to create a national model of school of aging services. Very shortly, we will launch a national search for the new Dean of the Erickson School with the assistance of executive search consultants Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates.

Provost Philip Rous

Permits are typically valid for two years from the date of issuance.

DACA participants whose permits expire by March 5, 2018 will be permitted to apply for two-year renewals as long as they do so by October 5, 2017.

New applications and renewal requests already received by DHS before today will be reviewed and validated on a case-by-case basis, even those for permits that expire after March 5, 2018.

DHS will no longer accept new applications for advance parole to travel abroad under standards associated with the DACA program.

We stand firm in our support for undocumented students’ access to public education, particularly our own “Dreamers,” students of diverse backgrounds earning degrees at UMBC through provisions of the Maryland Dream Act. We are deeply concerned that the federal government has decided to remove the federal protections DACA has provided, after requiring undocumented young people to identify themselves in order to access higher education. It is morally unacceptable for these students to be at risk of deportation, and UMBC leaders will vigorously advocate for swift Congressional action to establish the protections of DACA in law.

First and foremost, we are prepared to respond to the uncertainty and fear that students and colleagues with DACA status are experiencing. We are consulting with campus and external experts to understand the collective and individual implications of the Federal policy change and identify options and resources available to members of our community.

DACA students and allies seeking information and support are encouraged to contact The Mosaic: Center for Culture and Diversity (mosaic@umbc.edu, 410-455-2686) on UMBC’s main campus or Dr. Ashley Waters (awaters@umbc.edu, 301-738-6175) at the Shady Grove campus. Additional resources focused on diversity and inclusion more broadly can be accessed through UMBC’s Diversity and Inclusion website.

In addition, President Hrabowski has joined USM Chancellor Robert Caret and other USM leaders in a forthcoming letter urging Maryland’s Congressional Delegation to advance legislation to maintain and extend DACA protections. This is consistent with UMBC’s November 2016 endorsement of a letter from college and university presidents across the nation citing the moral imperative and national necessity to provide DACA students a path to education and productive lives.

We affirm UMBC’s commitment to provide all of our students with a safe and supportive educational environment and will keep the campus community updated on developments related to DACA.

President Freeman Hrabowski

Provost Philip Rous

Kimberly Moffitt, Faculty Senate President

Roy Prouty, Graduate Student Association President

Diana Smith, Non-Exempt Staff Senate President

Ashley Waters, Professional Staff Senate President

Joshua Massey, Student Government Association President
