Remembering Dr. Walter K. Sherwin

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

With great sadness I share with you that Dr. Walter K. Sherwin, a founding faculty member and a leader in the UMBC community, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

Dr. Sherwin taught on campus for more than 40 years, from its opening in 1966 until his retirement in 2011. Early in his career at UMBC, he established what would later become the Ancient Studies Department, and after receiving a Fulbright grant to study in Rome in 1967, he developed the university's first study abroad program — an opportunity for UMBC students that continues today.

Dr. Sherwin was widely admired by students, faculty, and staff for his energy and enthusiasm in the classroom, his commitment to classical studies, his kindness, and his sense of humor. He was an inspiring mentor, and many students in his program fondly remember him as a pivotal influence in the positive trajectory of their lives. A scholar of the classical tradition, his unique interdisciplinary approach to ancient studies introduced generations of students to the Latin language, Roman literature, and classical mythology. Dr. Sherwin tirelessly promoted ancient studies in the community as well, frequently lecturing and teaching in local schools and churches.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Sherwin was a dedicated fan of UMBC men's and women's basketball teams. A former college athlete and season ticket holder, he could often be found at games cheering on his beloved Retrievers.

Viewing services for Dr. Sherwin will take place on Friday, February 2, 2018, 5–8 p.m. at Witzke Candle Light Funeral Home, 1835 Frederick Rd., Catonsville, MD 21228. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, February 3, 12 p.m. at Our Lady of Angels Chapel, Charlestown Retirement Community, 713 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD 21228.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the UMBC Foundation Christopher Sherwin Fund in memory of Dr. Walter K. Sherwin. Please make your checks payable to the UMBC Foundation and note in the memo line your gift is in memory of Dr. Walter K. Sherwin.
Spring 2018 Influenza Season

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

I'm reaching out to raise your awareness of this year’s influenza (flu) season. According to the CDC and the Maryland Department of Health and Hygiene, there has been widespread flu around the country and the state, and University Health Services has documented cases of influenza on campus since November 2017. The flu is a respiratory illness with sudden onset of symptoms that can include a fever of over 100ºF, body aches, sore throat, headache, and cough.

This is an important time for us all to take some simple actions to protect ourselves and minimize the impact of the flu on our community.

Get a flu shot, it is not too late! UHS gave out 450 flu shots this season and while we do not have any more shots, they are available throughout the community.

Wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitizing stations located around campus.

Avoid those who are ill, if you can.

Clean surfaces that you or others touch frequently in your room and/or office with anti-bacterial cleaner (bleach wipes are effective).

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve--not your hands--and wash your hands immediately.

Avoid touching your face, whether you are ill or healthy; it spreads germs.

Avoid sharing food, utensils, cups, and water bottles.

The treatment for influenza for healthy people is mostly “supportive,” meaning rest, plenty of fluids, and fever-reducing medication as needed. Antiviral medications may be indicated, especially for students, faculty, and staff who have chronic medical problems (e.g., asthma or diabetes) and can be discussed with your primary care provider. Antiviral medications are most effective if started the within 48 hours of developing flu symptoms.

If you are sick, stay home and in bed. Avoid crowded places like dining halls, classrooms, restaurants, and the RAC or other fitness centers to prevent spreading illness to others. If you are sick, ask a friend to care for you.

Take fever reducers like acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil), or naproxen (Aleve) if you do have a fever. If your fever persists for more than three days in spite of taking these medications, please seek medical care.

Drink lots of fluids.

If you have been diagnosed with the flu and develop shortness of breath and severe fatigue, call your health care provider or go to an emergency room.

University Health Services is here to answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to contact us at 410-455-2542 for medical advice or further instructions and information. For more information about the flu, visit the Maryland Department of Health website.

Bruce Herman, Director, University Health Services and Counseling

Research Study Related to Ongoing Coalition Case

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

Several USM institutions, including UMBC, have received requests for information and access to campus administrators from an individual who is conducting a research study for a dissertation on Maryland’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. As part of the study, the researcher seeks participation by university administrators, faculty administrators, and administrative support staff in surveys and focus groups to elicit their views on issues relating to historically black institutions, academic program duplication and its effects, potential transfer of programs to HBIs, and related issues. These issues, among others, are the subject of an ongoing case in which the State of Maryland is a party, Coalition for Equity and Excellence v. Maryland Higher Education Commission, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. The research study seeks to analyze the lawsuit by obtaining the perspectives of higher education administrators at Maryland HBIs and non-HBIs.

While the UMBC Institutional Review Board has approved the protocol for this research, the Office of the Attorney General and UMBC’s Office of the General Counsel generally advise our client institutions not to comment on ongoing litigation or specific issues that are the subject of ongoing litigation. To the extent that this research project seeks the views of current university administrators on issues relating specifically to their institutions, any responses on those issues on the part of administrators could suggest an institutional position, and therefore a State position, on those issues.

Individuals are, of course, entitled to express their views as private citizens on matters of public importance. However, where such communications are made in the context of their public employment, it becomes very difficult to distinguish between private and institutional positions. As such, the campus should be mindful of potential impact on the State’s legal position that could result from institutional participation in this activity.

Please feel free to contact the Office of the General Counsel, 410-455-2870, if you have any questions.

David Gleason, General Counsel
