<Title>Preparing for Hurricane Florence</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Members of the UMBC Community:</span><br><br><span>Hurricane Florence is steadily approaching the East Coast. Current models predict it will make landfall in the Carolinas late Thursday or early Friday</span><span>. While the chance of tropical-storm-force winds in the Baltimore area is low, with the storm track projected to potentially move toward the south and west, storm paths can change and flooding remains a concern.</span><br><br><span>UMBC Police is receiving updates from our weather service, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, and the Maryland State Police, and the campus Emergency Operations Center is ready to be activated if the need arises. </span><strong>Please <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/rf3atb/nwtbnbb/7nw7hm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>sign up for UMBC Emergency Text Alerts</strong></a> for the latest campus updates</strong><span>.</span><br><br><span>Although major hurricane impacts in our area are unlikely based on current predictions, we encourage UMBC community members to have a </span><a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/rf3atb/nwtbnbb/ngx7hm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">hurricane preparedness plan</a><span> in case anything changes. <Title>Martina Buckley Named Associate Provost and Chief of Staff</Title>
<Tagline>Will lead financial management for Academic Affairs</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Dear Members of the UMBC Community,</span><br><br><span>I am delighted to announce that earlier this summer Martina Buckley joined the Office of the Provost as Associate Provost for Financial Management and Chief of Staff. </span><br><br><span>As Associate Provost for Financial Management and Chief of Staff, Ms. Buckley serves in a critical leadership role within Academic Affairs. She serves as an advisor to the Provost and provides executive support for academic affairs financial operations and planning, strategic planning and implementation, and project management for the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs.  She is also responsible for personnel functions, development and administration of policies and programs in the Office of the Provost, and oversight of the Academic Affairs Other Units (AAOU) Shared Services Center. She will work collaboratively with central administrative offices, academic units, and colleges across UMBC, and participate in university wide planning initiatives. </span><br><br><span>Ms. Buckley brings to the UMBC community her extensive experience driving best accounting and auditing practices across a wide spectrum of industries, including higher education, not-for-profit, and professional services. She has presented at several industry conferences and has a record of publications in industry journals.</span><br><br><span>Ms. Buckley joined us from Baker Tilly, an accounting and professional services firm, in the Higher Education Practice where she provided risk, internal audit, advisory, and consulting services to higher education institutions across the country. Previously she was employed at Fresno State University, the University of Kentucky, and Ohio University where she oversaw the daily operations of business offices, directed business and administrative functions, including accounting, budgeting, and revenue/expense forecasting, managed long-term strategic budget planning, directed HR functions, ensured compliance with administrative policies and procedures, coordinated internal projects and special events, implemented internal controls, and oversaw internal/external audits. </span><br><br><span>She holds a Master of Education from Belmont University and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).</span><br><br><span>UMBC is very fortunate to have someone of Martina Buckley’s impressive experience and talent to serve in this capacity.     <div class="html-content"><div>The Board of Regents’ Faculty Awards recognizes distinguished performance by faculty within the past three years, in the categories of: teaching, research/scholarship/creative activity, public service, mentoring and innovation, inter-USM campus collaboration. The Honors and Awards Committee of the Faculty Senate will select up to three individuals in each category for nomination to the Board of Regents.</div><div><br></div><div>To nominate yourself or a faculty colleague for one of these awards, prepare a packet of no more than five pages including a summary resume, a one-page essay by the nominee describing his or her contribution to excellence, a letter of recommendation from the department chair or dean, and brief documentation of exemplary achievement.</div><div><br></div><div>Submit the packet to the Honors and Awards Committee, c/o Patrice McDermott, Office of the Provost, by Friday, September 21. <Title>Virtual parking permits now available</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Virtual parking permits are now available for all parking across campus.</span><br><br><span>All employees who purchased their permits through payroll deduction last year have been automatically migrated to the new system, so no further action is needed at this time. However, we ask that you still </span><a href="http://umbc.nupark.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">verify your vehicle information</a><span> on your account to ensure it is correct and the most up-to-date.</span><br><br><span>You can use the </span><a href="http://umbc.nupark.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Parking Services Portal</a><span> to add vehicles to your account or purchase Daily Virtual Permits. </span><strong>New employees</strong><span> who wish to purchase parking permits through payroll deduction are required to </span><a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/rb4csb/nwtbnbb/zx636l" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">visit the Parking Services office</a><span> to complete a one-time payroll deduction form. </span><strong>Forms must be completed no later than <span><span>Tuesday, August 28</span></span></strong><span>.</span><br><br><span>The new permit system will go into effect at the start of the fall semester. <Title>Annica Wayman Appointed Associate Dean</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Dear Members of the UMBC Community,</span><br><br><span>I am delighted to announce the appointment of alumna Dr. Annica Wayman as Associate Dean for Shady Grove Affairs in CNMS, effective immediately.</span><br><br><span>As Associate Dean for Shady Grove Affairs, Dr. Wayman is responsible for administering and directing the undergraduate Translational Life Sciences Technology (TLST) program and Master of Professional Studies in Biotechnology at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG). She will oversee curricula and instruction; recruit and supervise qualified part-time faculty; collaborate with the Division of Professional Studies (UMBC-Shady Grove’s administrative division) on program marketing, student recruitment and retention activities; advise students; pursue business development opportunities with industry; manage UMBC's TLST/Biotechnology Advisory Board; and carry out the necessary administrative duties associated with academic program oversight. Dr. Wayman will also strengthen the relationships with our community college partners, while building UMBC’s presence and portfolio at USG.</span><br><br><span>Dr. Wayman brings to her new role extensive experience in leadership, administration, and education. For the past eight years, she worked at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), starting as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of Science and Technology and becoming a Division Chief in the Global Development Lab. At USAID, she led her team in managing scientific research policies and programs for the agency and its more than 90 field offices worldwide while also strengthening partnerships with higher education institutions, federal science agencies, global development institutions, and across the industry. Prior to USAID, Annica worked at Becton, Dickinson &amp; Co. (BD) where she served in various R&amp;D engineering roles ranging from advanced technology development to new product development for the anesthesia platform. Dr. Wayman received her Ph.D. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her thesis research focused on understanding the mechanokinetics of selectin-mediated adhesion of leukocytes on vascular surfaces. She received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UMBC.</span><br><br><span>UMBC is very fortunate to have someone of Dr. Annica Wayman’s impressive experience and talent to serve as Associate Dean for Shady Grove Affairs in CNMS. <Title>Remembering Dr. Lowell Groninger</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Dear Members of the UMBC Community,</div><div><br></div><div>Dr. Lowell Groninger, Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychology, passed away on July 14.</div><div><br></div><div>Lowell completed his B.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Illinois before joining the UMBC faculty in 1968. An expert in cognitive and experimental psychology, Lowell completed important studies on the use of imagery as a mnemonic device, the influence of autobiographical reference in memories, and memory for faces and names. Lowell also collaborated on the development and standardization of neuropsychological assessment instruments, including the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test and the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test. After 43 years of dedicated service, Lowell retired from the UMBC Psychology Department in 2011, and continued to teach Cognitive Psychology on a part-time basis for a number of years after that.</div><div><br></div><div>Colleagues remember Lowell as a remarkably kind, thoughtful, sensitive, and generous colleague whose indomitable spirit and levelheadedness were crucially important to the development of the department.
