Updates on our Retriever Courage Initiative Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

We are writing to share the latest information about Retriever Courage, UMBC’s initiative to strengthen campus prevention and response efforts related to incidents of sex discrimination and sexual violence/misconduct.

Retriever Courage committees have formed and are beginning their work, with representation from students, faculty, and staff across the university community. These partners will work together to provide a voice for and share feedback from constituents. The Faculty/Staff Advisory Committee and Student Advisory Committee will take recommendations to the University Steering Committee (USC). The USC will work with the Implementation Team to finalize recommendations for submission to vice presidents and deans, who will review and submit them to the president for final approval. During the fall semester, we’ve addressed some immediate needs that reflect the initial feedback we received from the UMBC community. Improvements to campus lighting are ongoing. A new UMBC ID with emergency contact information was designed and we anticipate the new card will be ready in the spring. We’ve also started rolling outmandatory in-person and online Title IX/sexual misconduct response and prevention training for administrators, faculty, and staff, and will begin developing and implementing mandatory training for our students through a collaborative process with the Student Advisory Committee and our external consultant/firm. Our procurement process teams — made up of students, faculty, and staff — are now conducting interviews for an external consultant/firm to review current university processes, policies, procedures, and practices regarding prevention and response, and we expect to announce the selection after we return from winter break.

Lasting change requires both short- and long-term work. This is just the beginning. In the coming months, we will be reviewing all aspects of UMBC’s sexual misconduct prevention and response policies and practices, and training and awareness programs, to help determine what is working well and where we can learn from other institutions’ best practices and from evidence-based research. We will cover all processes in response to sexual misconduct; models for training students, faculty, and staff; and best practices for providing support to students.

This work will be challenging, and it calls for each one of us to be involved, to listen to and learn from one another, so that UMBC will become a stronger community and Retriever Courage can have a lasting impact on campus and beyond. There are many different ways to be involved, such as joining an advisory committee, participating in educational workshops and training, becoming an advocate for survivors, and committing to being an observant, vocal bystander. We ask that you continue sharing your feedback as well. An anonymous input form is also available.

We encourage those who have observed or experienced sexual violence/misconduct to seek support as needed at any time. There are many resources available on campus and in the community that offer confidential medical support, confidential psychological/emotional support, and interim protective measures (e.g., no-contact orders, housing adjustments, academic concerns). For emergency situations, contact campus police via 410-455-5555 or local police via 911.

After 18 months of feedback from students, faculty, staff, and alumni through focus groups, retreats, meetings, and surveys, we’re almost ready to finalize our new graphic identity as part of a larger University-wide branding initiative.

We analyzed more than 5,000 responses to the September survey, and found strong support for the shield design and some support for, but many issues with, the circle design. In response, we’ve adapted and added a few elements, including fresh typography and incorporation of the True Grit statue as an option. (Note that, as before, the Athletics Retriever logo will remain available for Athletics and other spirit activities.)

We are writing to inform you of the status of UMBC’s physical education requirement for the undergraduate baccalaureate degree.

As you know, on November 13, 2018, as an information item, the Faculty Senate was presented with a draft resolution that would support an administrative proposal to eliminate the current physical education requirement. Yesterday, during the December 11, 2018 meeting of Faculty Senate, the Senators voted to support the elimination of the physical education requirement for all undergraduate baccalaureate degrees, effective Winter 2019 term and forward. This means that as of the Winter 2019 term, both currently enrolled and newly enrolled students will no longer be required to take physical education courses for their degree.

As a result of this resolution, all undergraduate degree audits will be automatically updated to reflect the new degree requirements. However, students who wish to remain under the prior requirements (have two physical education courses required for their degree), may request to have their degree audit/degree requirements reflect this choice (please refer to the FAQ page referenced below).

It is important to note that there will be no changes to any UMBC transcripts. The only changes that will be made will be to degree audits that will no longer display physical education courses as required for graduation.

While physical education is no longer required for the UMBC undergraduate degree programs, physical education courses will continue to be offered and students may elect to take a physical education course for their personal edification and for the health and wellness benefits.

As we enter the winter season, we ask that the UMBC community take a moment to familiarize themselves with our policies and procedures regarding weather-related closures and delays.

For the most reliable information, we encourage all members of the campus community to sign up for our E2Campus emergency alert text-messaging system. If the potential for inclement weather arises, please visit the UMBC homepage and myUMBC for the latest information on the status of campus.

Campus Closure Procedure

The decision to close or delay opening campus is determined by many factors, including the type and severity of the forecast conditions; current conditions of campus roads, parking areas, and walkways; and weather and related road conditions in the surrounding area. Please note that the decision to close campus or open late applies to the main UMBC campus only. Students, faculty, and staff at other sites are recommended to contact their location directly to receive inclement weather updates:
If Inclement Weather Occurs

Be sure to use official sources of information, such as E2Campus text alerts, campus email, and the UMBC homepage for the most complete, accurate, and up-to-date information about any delays or closures. We also strongly recommend you review our inclement weather and emergency closing policy to understand how a delay or closure impacts campus schedules, activities, and events. You can also see UMBC's snow removal plan to learn our process and prioritization for clearing roads, parking areas, and walkways.

Above all, we ask that you use personal judgment when traveling to and from campus. Weather and related road conditions are not the same in every area where students, faculty, and staff live. Consequently, the decision as to whether it is safe to travel must ultimately rest with each individual. Faculty are encouraged to arrange a system for communicating to their students should it be necessary to cancel class, and to be mindful that not all students may attend class.

On Monday afternoon, the governor announced that state government offices will close on Wednesday, December 5, in honor of the late President George H.W. Bush. The governor's announcement did not include the University System of Maryland (USM), its 12 universities and two regional higher education centers, all of which operate under a separate personnel system that enables independent decision-making regarding closures.

The announcement comes as universities across Maryland’s public higher education system race toward the end of the fall semester, final exams and winter break. With so few days to complete (or make up) the necessary instruction, coursework and exams, the USM is aware of the challenges that closing would pose to tens of thousands of students and faculty.

The USM has given individual institutions the flexibility to decide whether to close or remain open as scheduled on Wednesday. Guided by the needs of our students and the potential impact on their ability to successfully complete the semester, UMBC will be open Wednesday.

In addition, we want to let you know that UMBC will be closed Friday, December 21. We wish all of our dedicated staff, faculty, and students an enjoyable and restful winter break.

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

The season for influenza and other viral illnesses is upon us. Other Universities in the area are reporting a variety of viral illnesses. At UMBC University Health Services (UHS) we have not seen any patterns of illness beyond typical colds. Given what other campuses are seeing, University Health Services, Residential Life, Facilities Management, the RAC and Chartwells and ABM are working together to increase cleaning of high touch surfaces and restrooms around campus.

This is an important time for us all to take some simple actions to protect ourselves and minimize the impact of the flu and other viral illness on our community.
The treatment for influenza for healthy people is mostly “supportive,” meaning rest, plenty of fluids, and fever-reducing medication as needed. Antiviral medications may be indicated, especially for students, faculty, and staff who have chronic medical problems (e.g., asthma or diabetes) and can be discussed with your primary care provider. Antiviral medications are most effective if started the within 48 hours of developing flu symptoms.

Winter 2018 Commencement Volunteers Needed!

It’s time for Winter Commencement, and we need your help! We are looking for volunteers, both experienced and new, to help make this year’s ceremonies a great success for UMBC, our graduates, and their family and friends.
If you would like to volunteer to support one or both of these ceremonies, please fill out our commencement volunteer sign-up form. We will send you a confirmation email in the coming weeks with further instructions. Volunteer training for both ceremonies is scheduled for Tuesday, December 18 at 2 p.m. in the Event Center.
