Remembering Teresa Lupinek

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

Teresa Lupinek, who retired this past March from her position as Executive Administrative Assistant to the President, passed away on Friday, Aug. 2, 2019. Ms. Lupinek was a wonderful colleague and friend whose warmth, generosity, and dedication inspired so many of us during a UMBC career of more than 35 years. We are strengthened by her example even as we are saddened by her passing. Our thoughts are with Ms. Lupinek’s family.

Throughout her career at UMBC, Ms. Lupinek approached each of her roles with great professionalism, integrity, and poise. She began work in the Biology Department in 1984 and then moved to the Career Center. An integral member of the Career Center team, Ms. Lupinek was responsible for all business services and office manager duties for the growing department, including management and training of student workers and support staff. Her attention to detail and strong background in art and design led to the expansion of her role to include handling the design and print production of invitations and marketing materials for high-profile Career Center events and job fairs.

In 2012, she served as interim executive administrative assistant to the Provost’s Office before taking on a new role as Executive Administrative Assistant to the President. Using her extensive experience in office management and strong business acumen, Ms. Lupinek excelled in supporting the President's Office with scheduling and the preparation of briefing materials and agendas in a fast-paced environment. In collaboration with colleagues, she helped introduce several technologies to streamline elements of the office, making it more efficient and organized.

Ms. Lupinek also was very active in supporting and representing the campus community. She worked with campus leaders to recognize non-exempt staff as part of the UMBC Plan of Organization, resulting in the creation of the Non-Exempt Staff Senate shared governance group. In addition, she served as a member of the University Staff Development Committee, where she helped shape professional development programs for community members. She also served on the Financial Advisory Board and was an important voice in the implementation of PeopleSoft.

Outside of UMBC, Ms. Lupinek continually practiced her passion for art. She taught calligraphy and exhibited mixed media art in juried art shows through the Baltimore Women's Art Community. Her work was included in the "Her Hands" art exhibition and displayed in UMBC’s Library Gallery. A gifted calligrapher, she hand-lettered invitations for President Ronald Reagan's second inauguration through her involvement in the Howard County Calligraphers' Guild.

Over the past seven years, I had the distinct pleasure of working with Ms. Lupinek each day. Her kindness and collaborative spirit inspired us all and reflected the values and culture of the UMBC community. Ms. Lupinek spoke movingly about her experiences at UMBC in a video prepared for the University’s service awards ceremony. She will be greatly missed as a colleague and a friend.

A memorial service for Ms. Lupinek will be held in Catonsville at St. Mark Church, 30 Melvin Ave., on Friday, August 16, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the UMBC Foundation by mail or online. Yet we know that it is central to our humanity to acknowledge these tragedies, honor the victims, and grieve with all directly affected.

We also know that words must be joined by actions. As we prepare for the new semester, each of us has the opportunity to consider how we can best live the values of UMBC to help stem the tide of hate and violence that inspire such senseless acts. Now more than ever, our values of respect, inclusive excellence, and critical inquiry are essential parts of building a community that can help identify solutions to the urgent problems in our nation and world. We must continue to reach together across different experiences and perspectives to make change. We are fortunate to have a wide variety of campus resources available to students, faculty, and staff who wish to be involved in this work including the Center for Democracy and Civic Life (410-455-1565).

We are also aware that our community members will have a wide range of emotional responses to these events.
Athletics Transition

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

As the campus begins to search for our next Director of Athletics, the momentum of our Athletics program has never been stronger. Athletics colleagues have achieved milestones no one could have predicted ten years ago, including a men’s soccer Final Four appearance and historic NCAA Basketball Tournament victory. In addition, we have witnessed both women’s and men’s teams winning conference championships and impressive post-season play. Most important, our student-athletes demonstrate consistently strong academic performance.

As we congratulate Tim Hall on his new position as Director of Athletics at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, I want to recognize the collective contributions of the coaches and other staff he led for six years. I also want to express my appreciation for the broad leadership Vice President for Student Affairs Nancy Young and her colleagues have brought to the development of Athletics. Under her stewardship, our Event Center has come to life, we are poised to break ground on significant stadium improvements, and the campus fully understands the important role Athletics plays in creating a vibrant campus community. I especially appreciate how deeply she and her colleagues care about the experiences of our student-athletes and the Athletics staff.

When we learned Tim would be leaving, I talked with a number of faculty, staff, and student leaders to discuss the important connection between Athletics and the President’s Office. Based on these conversations, I have decided to move Athletics from the Division of Student Affairs to the Division of Institutional Advancement under the leadership of Vice President Greg Simmons. The Institutional Advancement team is an extension of the President’s Office, and Greg and I will work closely in supporting Athletics. Our first priority will always be the safety, well-being, and academic performance of our students. This organizational change will underscore our institutional commitment to Athletics, raise visibility that will help drive enrollment, continue to build school spirit and pride, and build our relationship with the larger community—especially alumni, sponsors, and donors.

I am delighted that Jessica Hammond-Graf has agreed to serve as Acting Athletic Director. Jessica has most recently served as Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator for Student-Athlete Well-being. For more than fifteen years, she has had a significant impact on the lives of student-athletes, coaches, and administrators through her passion for student success and mentorship. She led the advising and support of nearly four hundred students in the Academic Center for Student-Athletes, with 50 percent of student-athletes achieving above a 3.0 GPA each semester. She also created the Retriever Leadership Institute, which brings current and rising student-athletes together to hone leadership skills, such as working effectively in teams, managing conflict, and understanding their role as leaders on campus. The program was so successful it now serves as a model for other university groups.

I am also pleased that Jack Suess, vice president of the Division of Information Technology has agreed to lead our national search this fall for the next Athletic Director. The committee is currently being assembled and will begin its work shortly.

Please join me in thanking all of our colleagues and students who make us so proud of #RetrieverNation.

Freeman Hrabowski

He was also the founder of Performing Arts Center For African Cultures, FRITETE Afrobeat, and Fritete African Drum and Dance Ensemble. He performed in over 350 public schools and many community events, promoting a better understanding of African cultures through the performing arts.

Professor Ansah-Brew taught popular courses in African dance, Black music, and comparative African religions since 2005. These courses attracted students from diverse nationalities, ethnicities, religions, and disciplinary backgrounds.
