Emergency Preparedness Resources

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

The following are resources for our campus community to use in the event of an emergency situation on or near campus. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with these items.

E2Campus Emergency Text Alert System
UMBC uses the E2Campus emergency text alert system. The system allows rapid dissemination of information to the campus community in the event of an emergency through all text-enabled devices. If you have not yet done so, we strongly encourage all members of the campus community to sign up for these alerts.

Police Emergencies
If you are the victim of or a witness to criminal activity on campus, or if you observe suspicious activity or behavior, please contact UMBC Police immediately at 410-455-5555. If a situation arises that warrants a campus shelter-in-place or other campus-wide safety measures, UMBC Police will alert the campus through the emergency alert text-messaging system. If such a situation happens, please follow all instructions provided by UMBC Police.

Weather Emergencies
UMBC receives real-time warnings about critical weather events in our area, such as tornadoes, from a national weather information and monitoring system. We use this system to alert the campus immediately through our emergency alert text-messaging system, as well as to issue the all clear when danger has passed. Due to the nature of these storms, there is often little warning before severe weather strikes. If you hear local emergency sirens or in the event of a severe weather alert, please seek shelter immediately in the nearest building and, if available, follow signs to designated shelter areas. Move to the lowest level of the building and shelter in place in interior rooms, corridors, or stairways. Stay away from windows. If you are in a vehicle and unable to safely leave to seek shelter, keep your head below window level and leave the vehicle running so that safety systems such as airbags remain active. Wait for the all clear before returning to normal activity.

Fire Emergencies
If there is a fire in your classroom, workspace, or living area, leave the area immediately and pull the fire alarm. If a fire alarm sounds in your building, evacuate the building immediately. From a safe location, call UMBC Police at 410-455-5555.
