We are looking for volunteers, both experienced and new, to help make this year’s ceremonies a great success for UMBC, our graduates, and their family and friends</div><div><ul><li><strong>Graduate Ceremony -- Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at 10 a.m</strong></li><li><strong>Undergraduate Ceremony -- Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 10 a.m.</strong></li></ul></div><div>If you would like to volunteer to support one or both of these ceremonies, please fill out our commencement volunteer sign-up form. We will send you a confirmation email with further instructions. There will be a training/information session for all volunteers on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. on the Event Center arena floor.     <div class="html-content"><div><span>We received the following update from the Department of Budget and Management, Employee Benefits Division, regarding the SPS Workday system outage:<br><br><em>SPS is scheduled to be available to all employees by Monday morning, November 18th.  We anticipate the Open Enrollment period will be extended to Tuesday, November 19th, closing at 5:00pm.  New Dependent documentation requirements remain in effect.  We will update you with any additional changes. </em></span></div><div><span>We will continue to monitor the situation.<br><br><em><span>UMBC Human Resources </span></em></span></div></div>

<Title>2019-2020 Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><table border="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><div><div><span>The <strong>UMBC 2019-2020 Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign</strong> is now underway. Last fiscal year, 261 faculty and staff members made gifts to the UMBC Foundation. This fiscal year the goal is to have 300 faculty and staff members donate to the program or area at UMBC that inspires them the most.</span></div><div><span>As of today, more than $123 million has been raised towards our $150 million goal </span><span>for <strong>Grit &amp; Greatness: The Campaign for UMBC</strong>. Our progress would not be possible without faculty and staff members like you.</span><span><br><br>There are a couple of ways you can give to the <strong>2019-2020 Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign</strong>:</span></div><ol><li><span><strong>In just three easy steps, you can make a gift via payroll deduction at <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/7z9dtd/jdozdbc/bnmigs" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">usmd.edu/give</a>.</strong> This is the second year that giving via payroll deduction is done completely online. <Title>Gloria Holt, Financial Aid, is Retiring</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Gloria Holt, Associate Director of Audit and Compliance, in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will be retiring from UMBC after 16 years of service. Please join us in wishing Gloria well as she transitions into retirement life:</div><div><ul><li><strong>Wednesday, November 20, 2019</strong></li><li><strong>Time:  2 - 4 p.m.</strong></li><li><strong>Fireside Lounge, The Commons, Third Floor</strong></li></ul></div><div>When Gloria first joined UMBC, she served as Associate Director of Client Services; in 2014 she moved into the role of Associate Director for Audit and Compliance. As Associate Director for Audit and Compliance, Gloria developed a quality assurance program for UMBC’s financial aid programs that insures the office awards and manages financial aid in compliance with all federal, state and institutional rules and regulations. As a result, OFAS has seen a decrease in its findings in its most recent audits.</div><div><br></div><div>Gloria has been active in Eastern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (EASFAA) and the Delaware, District of Columbia and Maryland Association of Financial Aid Administrators (DEDCMD), most recently working with a committee to develop high school guidance counselor training programs on financial aid as well as serving on the Federal Relations Committee which advocates for legislation to support students and institutions.  Gloria also served on the Compliance Engine Task Force for the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA).</div><div><br></div><div>Closer to home, Gloria has been an active member of the Enrollment Management Community Cares Committee and has served as Enrollment Management’s Maryland Charities Campaign Co-Chair numerous times throughout the years.  </div><div><br></div><div>Gloria has always brought a spirit of fun, cooperation and a keen eye for detail to the many demands of working in student financial assistance.  While we will miss Gloria, we wish her nothing but happiness as she embarks on this next journey.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Gloria’s last day on campus will Thursday, November 21, 2019.</strong></div><div><br></div><div>If you have any questions or would like to contribute toward a gift, please contact Jane Hickey at <a href="mailto:jchickey@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">jchickey@umbc.edu</a> or at 410-455-1517.</div></div>

<Title>Marilyn E. Demorest Faculty Award Call for Nominations</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div>We are pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2019-2020 Marilyn E. Demorest Faculty Advancement Award. This award is supported by an endowment created by Dr. Marilyn Demorest, Professor Emerita of Psychology and former Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, to support the advancement of all UMBC faculty members in their academic careers; to facilitate their professional development; and to recognize their contributions to faculty advancement and success at UMBC.</div><div><br></div><div>This fund will be awarded annually to faculty who mentor and/or advise faculty and colleagues in their field. The Marilyn E. Demorest Faculty Advancement Award is conferred annually for a term of one year upon a UMBC faculty member.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Nominations (including self-nominations) for the 2019-2020 Award are due electronically to Vice Provost Patrice McDermott, <a href="mailto:mcdermot@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">mcdermot@umbc.edu</a>, in the Office of the Provost no later than Friday, November 22.</strong> The nomination should include a letter of recommendation (or self-nomination), a current curriculum vitae of the nominee, and an indication of how the nominee would spend the year as the Marilyn E. Demorest Faculty Advancement Awardee. The letter should make clear the faculty member’s contribution to mentoring and advising faculty.</div><div><br></div><div>The Marilyn E.     <div class="html-content"><div>We are writing to provide you with an update on our strategic enrollment planning effort that was formally launched at the university retreat earlier this year.</div><div><br></div><div>The first phase of our planning focused primarily on research related to UMBC’s undergraduate students and included a review and assessment of enrollment and student success outcomes. The next phase will  focus primarily on graduate student enrollment and progression.</div><div><br></div><div>We would like to acknowledge and thank the many members of the UMBC community who have engaged in the planning process to date and have provided important perspectives and input to the planning process through the university retreat, faculty, department chair, staff, student and program director focus groups, interviews and the hundreds of people who responded to faculty/staff survey. <Title>Instructional Space and Scheduling Improvements Initiative</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span>Dear UMBC Faculty and Staff,<br></span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>We are pleased to announce the formal launch of the <strong>Instructional Space and Scheduling Improvements Initiative (ISSI)</strong>. Consistent with recommendations in UMBC’s Strategic Plan, the purpose of this initiative is to develop recommendations to significantly improve the availability and utility of instructional spaces at UMBC. This initiative follows from the Instructional Space and Scheduling Review Study that was conducted by Educational Consulting Services Corp. (ECS) and resulted in two reports: the <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/3o64pd/jdozdbc/7nc8cr" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Utilization Report</a> and the <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/3o64pd/jdozdbc/ngd8cr" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Key Issues and Planning Directions Report</a>. Based on the content of these reports, three <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/3o64pd/jdozdbc/38d8cr" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">informational sessions</a> were conducted for the UMBC community in April and May 2019.<br></span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>In order to develop a set of recommendations, we’ve established an ISSI <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/3o64pd/jdozdbc/j1e8cr" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">steering committee</a>, <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/3o64pd/jdozdbc/ztf8cr" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">task force</a>, and five <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/3o64pd/jdozdbc/fmg8cr" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">working teams</a> representing a broad range of campus stakeholders. Detailed information on the charges for each of the working teams, their membership, and the project timeline can be found <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/3o64pd/jdozdbc/veh8cr" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a>. The event is a dynamic celebration of light and literature taking place at the Inner Harbor and in neighborhoods across the city from November 1-10, 2019.<br><br>UMBC events at Brilliant Baltimore include:</span></div><ul><li><span><strong>The Empowered University, Sunday, November 3, 2 p.m., USM Columbus Center</strong> -- UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski will discuss his new book, The Empowered University: Shared Leadership, Culture Change, and Academic Success, written with Provost Philip Rous and Peter Henderson.
