Academic Continuity

  • Pass (P) grading request forms for undergraduate and graduate students are now available for students to use through the June 10th deadline.
  • Decisions regarding the applicability of Pass (P) grading toward major/minor/certificate requirements as well as toward prerequisite requirements were made at the discretion of each academic department. Information regarding departmental decisions have been posted to the FAQ page as well as on the Registrar's Office web page.

Business Continuity and Staff Support

  • Due to the health risks presented by the COVID-19 crisis, all day-camps, on-campus events, and programs/activities scheduled in UMBC facilities through UMBC personnel are canceled for Summer 2020. More details here.
  • UMBC’s EAP Program is hosting a webinar: Being an Effective Manager During COVID-19. You can view the full webinar series in the myUMBC training group.
  • Effective with the start of the next pay cycle (May 24, 2020), and in accordance with USM guidance, non-exempt employees performing some or all of their work on campus will no longer be eligible for additional pay or compensation time related to this work on campus. We appreciate the continued hard work and dedication of all employees as we navigate this difficult and unprecedented time.

Only employees with a letter from their supervisor, researchers approved through the Access Exception process, and students that are approved for late stay should be on campus. Dear Colleagues,

As we come to the end of the Spring 2020 semester, I wish to thank each of you for your remarkable work and commitment to the UMBC community, and most especially our students, and for everything you have done to transition so quickly to remote instruction. This is a major accomplishment at a time when we recognize that the current health crisis has had a great impact on both your professional and personal lives. 

I wish to commend our faculty for the high level of engagement with their students and the care they have demonstrated to prepare their courses for remote instruction, including by participating in the new Planning Instructional Variety for Online Teaching (PIVOT) program, which was offered for the first time earlier this month. So far, 263 faculty have participated in the PIVOT program, and 122 of those 263 faculty will be teaching this summer—a testament to your enduring commitment to teaching excellence.

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) has scheduled additional PIVOT sessions throughout this coming summer and is working with the Colleges and the Faculty Development Center to develop specialized versions that are tied to specific peer learning groups. The current training schedule for summer is as follows:
  • May 20: Bb Essentials | PIVOT Solo (self-paced for summer)
  • June 15-19: PIVOT Live
  • July 13-17: PIVOT Live
  • Aug. 17-21: PIVOT Live

UMBC leaders are working closely with colleagues from the University System of Maryland (USM) and other campuses to explore a range of options for the delivery of fall instruction. We are carefully considering options to have some on-campus instruction in the fall—to the extent possible and in ways that protect the health and safety of our campus community. USM Chancellor Jay Perman recently announced that USM will work with campuses to develop a framework for the fall semester by the end of May.

As we work to protect the safety and health of all members of our community, we will identify the conditions that must exist within the state and on our campus for students, faculty, and staff to return safely and assess how those conditions will affect our academic and administrative operations. We will use state and federal public health guidelines to inform our evidence-based decision-making. We will also continue to work closely with local health departments, faculty, students, and staff, including shared governance leadership.

A Fall Planning Coordinating Committee, led by Provost Philip Rous and Vice President for Administration and Finance Lynne Schaefer, is assessing the feasibility of various fall semester scenarios in areas including academics, student life, research, operations, and events and engagement. Dear Members of the UMBC Community, 

Today the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights issued its final updated regulations implementing Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and discrimination against pregnant and parenting students, faculty, and staff. 

The publishing of the amended regulations marks an end to a lengthy regulatory process that the U.S. Department of Education began in November 2018. At that time, President Hrabowski wrote to the UMBC community detailing the proposed rules, and explaining some of the changes the rules sought to make.

We want to reassure the community that UMBC’s values will guide how we implement these new regulations, and that we remain committed to providing the highest standard of support and care to all impacted by these issues. 

UMBC’s new Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) is open and fully operational, with staff working remotely during this time. Please visit the OEI website to learn more about the team. To report a complaint of sexual violence, misconduct, harassment, or discrimination, please use our online form. UMBC Title IX policies and procedures can be found here.

We also understand that the content of these changes will be stressful for some students regardless of when or whether they take effect. The UMBC community has a variety of resources available on campus and beyond to support students, faculty, and staff who are impacted by Title IX and equity and inclusion issues.

The Office of Equity and Inclusion plans to hold the first of several Community Conversations on these issues on Wednesday, May 13, at 3 p.m. Details will be provided soon on our website. Please feel free to email questions in advance to OEI@umbc.edu or submit them anonymously.
